Not sure about clutching at straws – he was not put forward by the party as any kind of solution to electoral woes, he seemed to be much more a ‘stalking horse’ so that the party could be seen to have had an open conversation with it’s own past, and thus could go forward with a mandate for middle ground politics unarguably established. It was an attempt to bring skeletons out of closets, to establish.. legitimacy.

From the point of view of the New Labour establishment this is backfiring horribly.
