Thanks, Low, DD, SH and Bruce! Fascinating fact of the day, that one.
DC3s do not have a fatigue life.
Can you guys who know about these things explain this to those (like me) who don’t? As the materials from which DC3 components are made surely suffer from fatigue like any other material, how do DC3’s avoid this? OK, to be fair, it’s the COMPONENTS that have the fatigue life, not the aircraft, but this is true in all cases – are DC3’s somehow exempt?
This sounds facetious – sorry, it’s meant as a genuine question, from a (braced) position of ignorance.
Have you flown from there, Tim?
Don’t tell ’em, Pike! I reckon it’s a good competition – I’m thinking it’s an airstrip, but WHERE?
Try here – looks genuine, as the front cover is displayed and definitely says Spitfire I
More drift, but.. saying ‘go to Google instead of the forum’ is no different from suggesting one reads books instead of asking on here. The point is missed – this forum (when it’s functioning at its best) is a distillation of expertise, not just in knowing ‘stuff’ but also ‘where to find stuff’, from experience. Google is worth mastering, and it’s not difficult. But.. ah, no, wait, I’m only going to start repeating what JDK has already said. Not for the first time.
Short ‘G’ class. I’d then move the family into it, and tour the world.
Can take at least two from Cambridge Station to Little Gransden next year.
splash out on a taxi on your way back to Cambridge.
😮 That will cost more than your flight..
Oz, if you guys need a lift on Friday I’m local and it’s no problem to pick you up from the station and run you to the Red Lion in Hinxton. Just let me know nearer the time when you’ll be there 🙂 Don’t know about the return journey, though – depends when, as I’ll have a newborn and a Hurricane to look after over the weekend! There’s always taxis.
TG, I guess coaches are out then. Still, train Stansted – Cambridge and free bus Cambridge – Duxford is still an option which MIGHT be easier depending upon connections. It saves you the walk, as well.
Sadly no – the line goes right by it (you can see it on the map above), but there’s no stop there.
There’s one at Great Chesterford, on the same line – almost exactly the same distance away as Whittlesford, but to the South. EDIT – actually no, it’s further away.
Welcome to our wonderful, integrated and just downright useful public transport network. Oh, and heavy British sarcasm.
TG, another option to consider. Stansted-Cambridge by train (OR NATIONAL EXPRESS COACH). Then jump on the free airshow shuttle bus (this runs from Cambridge station). If you choose Stansted-Cambridge by Coach, you can even cut out some time by getting off the coach at ‘Trumpington park and ride’, and picking up the airshow shuttle from there.
See http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/server.php?show=nav.619 – bottom of page – ‘getting to the airshows’
This is frustrating, as a specific number of pumps was mentioned in something I was reading very, very recently – perhaps either ‘Spitfire Women’ or ‘Sigh for a Merlin’ Unfortunately I am at work, so can’t check. However, I think the number was 21. I will check as soon as I get home!
Here you are, TG – open from 8am, probably the sort of thing you are looking for:
ZRX and Trumper – Odd how Cambridge has so many old plane enthusiasts (I mean enthusiasts for old planes, not old enthusiasts) for such a small town. Is it the DX influence?
By the way, did anyone see the Hercules doing vertical climbs and wing overs above Marshalls a couple of months ago? Remarkable.
ZRX – you know, I might try that. Is there an official ESL Carnage league? I reckon the density of foreign students with no road (or pavement) manners because daddy always sorts out ‘difficulties’ back home has increased recently.
Trumper, that cycle path was probably the work of the committee that brought us the (mis)guided bus.
Anyway, if anyone does want a lift from Cambridge for Legends then I’m happy to offer. I know there’s a perfectly good bus, but you’ll miss out on all the ranting!
