I would have to say the F-20, the F-16xl and although not really a fighter, but more of a bomber…. The FB-111H

How about something like the “Atlantic Conveyor” used in Falklands. Use a container cargo ship to store parts equipment in. Build a flight deck for helicopters/harriers and maybe mount a Phalanx on it.

Are all of the images computer generated? Did anyone else notice that the US flag only had 48 stars on it? What happend to Alaska and Hawaii?

I would still go with the F-4B as it had a lot of potential. Although I am surprised that they didn’t mount a gun pod on it earlier.

Slightly off topic…I remember reading that the F-5 was intended to be used on old WW2 escort and light carriers, until the ships were phased out. Since the F-5 is/was used in Aggressor training mimicing Mig-21’s, I wonder how they would have fared against a Mig 21? How about using A-4s with 2 sidewinders and 20mm ?

    cheers

Something else to think about…..Did the RAAF ever consider buying Tornados to augment/replace the F-111C?
I know they bought USAF spares (FB-111A-F-111G’s), but I wonder how long would the Tornados last if the were purchased.

I originally was not going to inclue the Mirage 3, but license building and operating the aircraft gave the RAAF a modern supersonic fighter bomber, and although the F-4E was shortlived it did provide an interim strike aircraft pending the F-111 arrival.

I wonder if the F-4s role would have been changed to Fighters if they had been kept and leaving the F-111s to be the strike/recce a/c?

    what about the F-8 Crusader?

Sorry I don’t have a picture, but the F-8 Crusader (and later A-7 Corsair 2) had mountings for single sidewinders on the side of the fuselage. Sometimes the F-8 had a pair of them on each side as well.

Slightly OT but after President Carter cancelled the B-1, GD came up with a proposal to stretch the fb-111a into the FB-111h and arm it with additional SRAM missiles in the bomb bay and also externally on the fuselage.

Did the RAF ever consider doing the same with the Tornado, stretching it, giving it more range and carrying Storm Shadows with WE-177 warheads, making it a semi strategic bomber?

I’ll have to agree that money is the main factor.

Planes are getting down right expensive to build. I remember reading an article in Aviation week and space technology about 20 years ago that the US would soon be spending its entire defense budget on a single aircraft. I thought it was a joke, but looking at the prices for the F-22 and JSF makes you wonder.

Maybe its time to consider low tech/low cost back into the equation, something like a newer version of the F-5E / A-4 skyhawk. Would it be better to have a lot more low tech fighters or one or two advanced fighters?

There are other “variable” wings people don’t really talk about.

For example, Variable Incidence. I wonder how many in this board can raise their hands up and tell you flat the name of an operational fighter with actual variable incidence wing and what variable incidence is.

Then there is variable camber. Nobody talks about that anymore because that is already a standard feature in every wing. Well, except for those with “hard” wings with wing fences.

    Wasn’t that the F-8 Crusader?

Foreign buying is not limitied to aircraft. What about the OTO Melara (now Bereda) 76mm naval gun currently used on the OHP class frigates?

Years ago, they tested something called ZELL (Zero Length Launch) on F-100’s and F-104’s, basically an external rocket pack that when the jets engine was running, blasted the jet into the air, without the use of a runway.

I wonder if ZELL could be used today, to launch an F-16 into the air in a matter of minutes to protect a large city.

Years ago Mcguire had F-105s and later F-4C and possibly F-4D models, but they were tasked for Air to ground mode. Atlantic City maintained a flight for F-106s and later F-16’s, that should have been able to reach NYC in a matter of minutes, had they gone supersonic. It is only 126 miles from Atlantic City to NYC.

If the Tomcat was not available and the Navy decided to upgrade the Phantom, to something like the Boeing Super Phantom, would they consider putting a gun on the plane? Possibly a single colt 20 mm installing in the conformal fuel tank?
