@Aspis: The US Army has always believed in ballistic protection as a total concept. And your post on the Apache seems to confirm that thinking.

Against 9mm? It’s not like the Apache will go to rob a bank and face a policeman with his handgun.

On a more jovial note, the US Army provides gear with 9mm ballistic protection to its soldiers. For ex: the US Army produces standard face masks with 9mm ballistic protection. Just send in a few heavily protected soldiers to rob that bank. πŸ˜‰ An apache will be overkill. πŸ™‚

Which only raises the question as to what form of transonic performance improvement will come about from such an F414 EPE power enhancement? That is, the extra kick necessary to break through the hump, sooner, hence also saving fuel.

I’m also curious if there’s some reason why the SHornets EFT’s are so draggy and rounded in appearance, as opposed to say F-15 or F-16 tanks? Would a more aerodynamic centerline EFT for example, help punch through transonic?

I did recommend a comparison between F18E/F and the F15E in a new thread. But things get muddled and i guess its no more offtopic for this thread itself.

Such a comparison would clearly show why the EPE engine is going to play an important role for improving SH performance in the air.

Also a more powerful powerplant would improve payload capabilities when operating off a carrier deck.

    Almost, but why MiG-25 over MiG-31 ?

    Nostalgia maybe πŸ˜€

This is that kind of thread. πŸ™‚

I have a few questions regarding the IAF going with 57 more hawks:

    – 17 of the 57 are going to be for the Indian Navy. Will there be any difference in airframe?

    – Will naval trainee pilots have any carrier-based training using these 17 hawks?

    – What is the new variant number? Will it remain Mk 132 (115Y) or will it change?

The refit of the Gorshkov into the Vikramaditya has been highly costly and risky

It is NOT being refitted in the OEM country, she was built in the Ukraine at the Nikolayev Black Sea shipyard.

They didn’t have correct internal drawings of the ship.

I think you will find the Ski Jump is a British invention but I concede that it doesn’t have much bearing on developments.

Wrong. Nevermind, I will give you proof myself.

Conversion Program Designed by the OEM Designer

The vessel was designed by St. Petersburg’s Nevskoye Design Bureau

The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in December 1998, during a visit by Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, by which India agreed to acquire the carrier and fund a refit & refurbishing program. This program was developed by the Nevskoye Design Bureau and will be carried out at the Severnoye shipyard at Severodvinsk.

The Gorshkov conversion program was designed and developed by the OEM design bureau i.e. Nevskoye Design Bureau 😎

Fedaykin, Where is St. Petersburg? It’s in Russia not in Ukraine and Nevskoye Design Bureau is in St. Petersburg. 😎

These are the main reasons why I said the program is risk-free i.e. technically sound …

Again let me reiterate: the refit is being done by the country that gave the original designs i.e Russia.

The word OEM in this context refers to the meaning “original design source”. That is where the Intellectual Property is.

India wanted a ski-jump and the Mig29K. This meant the Nevskoye Design Bureau who had the IP had to be involved from the start.

    Saudi’s buying 84 F15’s, 72 UH60’s

Boeing reps told us then that the sale would most likely be the F-15SG configuration, an advanced version of the F-15E fitted with Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and a third generation Lockheed Martin SNIPER targeting pod.

    Sounds good.

There seems to be a lot of cabling that needs to be done. From my source above it says 50% of cabling left. Also officially, sea trials begin in 2011.

Ah I see it now. Tu28 and Tu128 are one and the same. :p

Levsha, don’t keep the suspense for too long. Maybe wait for a day, thats it. πŸ™‚

By “airliner style control yoke” you mean something that looks like the steering wheel of a car right?

Some numbers on Hornet and Super Hornet acceleration:

“At 5,000 feet at maximum thrust, the F/A-18C accelerates from 0.8 Mach to
1.08 Mach in 21 seconds, whereas the F/A-18E will take 52.8 seconds.”

    (http://www.gao.gov/archive/1996/ns96098.pdf, p.30)

Payload is 60% fuel, two wingtip Sidewinders and two (likely conformal) AMRAAMs, so almost clean. It does say the SH figure is an estimate, the report dating from June 1996 (half a year after its first flight), but the numbers for the basic model should be reliable.

To put this into perspective a bit, in similar conditions (clean, 1000m altitude, 50% fuel) the new Su-35 is supposed to sprint from Mach 0.5 to 1.1 in not quite 22 seconds.

Trident, great source. The clarity of the text is amazing. I read thru pages 30 and 31. And you seem to be correct. Interesting, hmm.

So my conclusion that the SH needs the EPE engine’s 20% improvement in thrust seems spot on.

    I doubt that.

Gorshkov conversion program is risk-free because:
    – The refit is being done by OEM country, Russia and
    – Internal “OEM structural plans” of Gorshkov are available
    – Mig29K and Ski-Jump both designed by the OEM country

    and biggest advantage:
Russia would actually prefer to keep the Gorshkov for herself :p

All of these factors make me conclude Gorshkov will be a major force to reckon with.

Gorshkov refit on track, says Navy

β€œThe progress has been going well. Around 99 per cent of the structural work is over and almost 50 percent of the cabling work is complete. Large-sized equipment, like engines and diesel generators have been installed,” he said.

    My two favorites:

    1. F16XL/F-16 SCAMP (Supersonic Cruise and Maneuver Prototype) [operational with Nasa]
    -Cranked Arrow Delta wing and
-ability to supercruise with the 23830lbs(103KN, afterburner) engine in the early 1980’s. Imagine if it had got the F110, the latest blk60 engine!

    2. Mirage 2000 (many operators)
    – Quite fast, max speed Mach 2.35

Actually the F15E and F18E are pretty new and will have most of their airframe life as of today. So current customers like SK, Australia may add some of the features from the F15SE/F18E-Advanced as MLU’s to their operational F15e’s/F18E’s, while waiting for their F35’s.

For ex: the Conformal Weapon Bay on the F15SE and the new EPE Engine on the F18E-Advanced could be chosen as the MLU features.

Unless Boeing makes a press release we won’t know if there actually are new customers for the F18E-Advanced and the Silent Eagle.
