In reality that maynot be possible. Insurgents have their own tactics like using “human shields” or operating from a densely populated area. The window of opportunity will be very fleeting. In such a scenario surveillance, intelligence and staying hidden become important.

Another feature that is COIN specific is the ability to “hover”.

For example take Aurora’s Excalibur UCAV ….. it is a VTOL UCAV. Features include the ability to do a “silent hover”. The Excalibur also carries hellfire missiles. 🙂

A VTOL UCAV “silently hovering” behind a building/tree waiting for its target(s). Now can an ordinary COIN aircraft dream of doing such a thing??

As many folk probably have already hinted that supercruise capability is the most upfront answer to reduce IR signature.

Higher the Mach envelope that a fighter can achieve in supercruise mode the longer it can keep down its IR signature.

Did you know that in the US being a UCAV pilot is now a full-time job. you are essentially considered a pilot and its a lucrative career option now. UCAV pilot candidates are screened with very high standards.

Also training a new pilot for COIN duties is expensive compared to a UCAV pilot.

i havent really looked at a f-15 but the engine upgrades on the SH will give it better acceleration than SH has now, but i think i lean to the f-15 for acceleration at a guess
but it wont be based on which one is the fastest 🙂 but i’m sure someone will say the f-15 is m2.5 and the SH is m1.7, so f-15 wins

the f-15 aesa will have the apg-79 SH backend and a larger antenna, so 15 should have the edge there in the se/uber, if both have the same [new or 79] backend
its a matter of other systems that boeing puts in, ultimately its up to them which one will be ‘better’

My view has always been that the F15 is superior aerodynamically than the Super Hornet.

I wasn’t referring to max speed. Ability to retain energy or regain energy quickly is executed better on the F15 for sure.

However, with the new engine the SuperHornet Upgrade should be a better aircraft aerodynamically (within its speed envelope) than with the current engine.

Have you heard of the NGJ (Next Gen Jammer) and Lockheed’s plans to integrate it into the F35? 🙂

Apropos the EF-35, its not a question of “If”, its a question of “When”.

Your stand is completely based on affordability. Who said UCAV’s are expensive? And how exactly is basic machinery cheap?

UCAV’s also offer many more features like “loitering”. This means a UCAV can wait for a terror suspect to arrive on the scene before going offensive.

They already know. 🙂 The USAF will be the first to see changing military trends.

UCAV’s will kill any resurgence of COIN aircraft.

A-Darter uses BAe Systems guidance systems

In late September 2006 Denel Aerospace Systems selected BAE Systems’ SILMU02 solid-state inertial measurement unit for midcourse guidance of the A-Darter missile.

South Africa’s Denel Dynamics is responsible for the imaging-infrared seeker for its A-Darter. The seeker is derived from the IR-seeker of the 3rd-Gen U-Darter. A-Darter reportedly carries a 17 kg warhead (compared to 9.4 kg for the AIM-9L/M).

The EF-35 looks to have a very good chance of production. The motivation for this variant is lower cost of operation/maintenance apart from the advantages of stealth.

    A-Darter Brochure from Denel Dynamics

    SYSTEM FEATURES

    • High agility to handle the closest of close combats
    • A two-colour thermal imaging seeker with high sensitivity and a multi-mode ECCM suite
    • A low-drag, wingless airframe, ensuring ranges beyond those of traditional short-range missiles
    • Lock-on after launch and memory tracking capabilities
    • A lightweight design compatible with traditional Sidewinder stations

The A-Darter may be designated to a target by using the aircraft’s radar, a helmet sight, or the missile’s autonomous scan feature if radar silence is required. The seeker’s large look-angles and the airframe’s agility make high off-boresight helmet designated firings possible. Longrange intercepts, beyond IR detection range, are possible, using the lock-on after launch mode.

unofficial word around..Rafales were used as decoys to lure a/c from their targets..were detected and tracked..but they were quick and exited the “arena” before anyone (MKI and F16 ) could pounce on them..

You’re saying the MKI/F16 were supposed to target each other but instead they tracked a Rafale and lost track of their true target? Thats weird.

    First; Thanks for your input!

Now that I see the frontal pic, I also think it’s a Missile bay, but I have another question,:

What ‘s the use for the LO Missile Bay if you use a 360 degree radar so that any Fighter in a about 100 miles knows that you are there? Or are they used passively?

    Thanks!

Well more details have to emerge about the PAKFA. Until then we dont know what kind of performance we are talking about.

All that can be extrapolated at such an early date is that sensor fusion exists on the PAKFA.
