    Ian,
Thinking a bit outside the box!!
Perhaps it’s not a ladder at all (the foot-space might indicate this?) but a horizontal support for a standard wooden plank?

    WA$, Hi,
Point taken! It was Easter 1986 before I stopped doing routine Dets to RAF Stanley so I was (possibly more than most) able to monitor, over a period of time, the mood/thinking of The Locals.
    But to paraphrase your post:
The benefit to (us in the UK?) was the overthrow of a cruel and corrupt (civil??) dictatorship and the restoration of democracy; unfortunately that very democracy now seems intent on using exactly the same strategy over the UK to divert attention from other problems that the government is dealing with.
I merely use this to point out that politicians of all parties, creeds, govts, countries, etc, use the same ploys to get re-elected, or to hide from their electorates the parlous state of the “home” economy, etc, and the problems therein. Recent arrests in the UK may be taken into context!!!
There is a considerable body of work to be done to discover why there has never (yet!!!) been a military takeover in the UK since Cromwell?

But don’t forget that as soon as the Argies had been chucked out of the Falklands the vast majority of The Locals just wanted us (the UK military) to go away and leave them as they had been before! They were totally unable to grasp the fact that it was never, ever, going to be the way it was before – possibly the last feudal society in the western world? Hopefully the introduction of new genetic strains has counteracted the problems they had before.

Yeah, I reckon that what I drank in some remote part was pretty close to C-stoff(Ergol 61) – at least the Chloroform and Potassium Cuprocyanide bits!!!!

Some of the remoter parts of Ireland (and, possibly, Scotland) have been known in the past – and maybe even now! – to produce a colourless, odourless, liquid which could be used as a substitute! Visitors to those parts – and not used to the ‘local brew’ – have been noted as describing it as ‘F-stoff’!!!!!!!!!!!!

But to return to the original post!
Is there any truth in the scuttle-butt I heard in FI at the original RAF Stanley that an incoming Exocet was detected by several ships? And quite apart from the dreaded sea-surface duct radar problems this Exocet was pinging with a radar ident sequence which made some say “It’s OK. It’s one of ours” on account of the French giving NATO the missile radar ident sequences?
Now I’m just an ordinary Met Bloke. I know about Sea Surface Ducts. But does anybody know if this scuttle-butt had an iota of truth in it?

    Rob, Hi,
This might have you running up a gum tree! But this might (rpt, might) just be one of your men?
I have found (quite by accident) a John Harvey Range. He Enlists in the RAFVR sometime soon after Sep 1939 at Padgate – No 1021012. He gets Commissioned (from Warrant Officer) in the RAFVR GD Branch on 24 Jan 45 (Officer number 191888). There are a number of hits on that Officer number in the LG. He appears to have Transferred to the A&SD Branch on 31 Oct 46. Next he goes to the PF Branch on 1 Jan 47 (question:- when was the PF Branch ‘invented’?)
HTH, but sorry if it’s Duff Gen!

Much excitement in the Met Team. Documents of historical importance. Lyffe will contact you off-board.
