You can date that photograph. He’s still wearing the brass ‘VR’ collar tabs. He Enlisted at Padgate (nr Blackpool) between Sep 1939 and Apr 1941 (probably nearer the first). His Enlisted number was 1029107. On 30 Jan 42 he was Commissioned – and got a new Number (121280).

And being part of the MoD “loss problem”.
Everything that couldn’t be accounted for on the Falkland Is was said to have “gone down with the Atlantic Conveyor”. I defy any Stores Officer to deny this! And I can give chapter, verse, and line, for some of the more blatant. You think I’m joking? Makes fiddling Met Office Stores vouchers look like child’s play!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, plenty,
But none that you’d believe!

Dave,
Sorry, I WILL get you started!! Unless the likes of you and I go on, and on, and on, about this there will be no improvement!
I appreciate that the few of us who care about this cannot make up the appalling derogation of duty on the part of the teaching ‘profession’ who have turned out a (if not several) generation(s) of illiterates. But we can, at least, try.
Our correspondents on this (and other Fora) who do not have English as their first, and natural, language put us to shame!!

Not, of course, that there is not subtle value in different spellings. The legendary tale from (I think, Habbaniya) the early 1930’s will serve to illustrate.
The S Eng O was being posted out at the end of his tour. He was found to be deficient:
“Hangars, Aeroplane, Hinaidi, ea 1”. Big problem! The “Locals” had quietly disassembled it over a year or so, and ‘had it away’!!!
But, being an enterprising bloke, he went to the Eqpt Sect and raised a Conversion Voucher converting “Hangars, Aeroplane, Hinaidi, ea 1” to “Hangers, Coat, Officers for the use of, ea 1”. The S Eqpt O was presented with this voucher just before lunch. He duly signed it – and the Coat Hanger was written off for 6d (old money!).
This is the stuff of legends – but I suspect that at some place, and at some time, a similar trick had been played!!

Ken,
One of the best Posts on this (or other Fora) for a very long time. And I thought I was a “lone voice crying in the wilderness”!!! There is, it appears, hope for the human race yet in English spelling, grammar, and syntax. And while we are at it can I ask that ‘your/you’re’ and ‘there/their’ be included in the tutorial?
If I had received a CV with any of those mistakes in it I would have chucked it straight in the bin. And just in case the prospective employee had used the services of the professional CV writer I would provide pencil and paper and ask the differences to be explained before the very eyes of the board!
Well done. More power to your arm!
Resmoroh.

Pete and I have ‘met’ via a cartoon of an NF Meteor landing on the finishing straight at Newmarket Racecourse. Hope you are well, Peter?
Many years ago there was an Air Min/MoD cttee called the “Joint Technical Requirements Committee”. I was told to attend the routine meetings of this cttee just in case there was a “Met” orientated problem. Whenever any of the 3 Services (or their civilian support services) had a problem that could not be resolved through “the normal channels” it got referred to the JTRC. The early Tornado’s on-board computers would suffer failure if they flew anywhere near a thunderstorm!! JTRC thought that if a Tornado was flown under the pylons of the electricity pylon training location (somewhere in Somerset?) whilst the entire output of the national grid was “flashed over” it would simlulate a thunderstorm!!
I have to say that NONE of the JTRC members would be in the a/c!!
Sounds like the Glue Joint Cttee preceeded us by some years!!!!!!!!!!

BROKEN ARROW was the US code-word for a nuclear related air accident. The UK MoD used the same code-word. I was (at one time) in the UK Met Office dept responsible for nuclear safety. We had highly classified documents relating to this (and other various nuclear accidents, in the air, on the ground, and at sea(and under it!)). What the UK authorities should (or should not) do was laid down in some very fine detail! They should all be still available, and should be accessible via Freedom Of Information procedures.

All very laudable, BUT (and it’s a very big ‘but’!) all positive aspects, and all viewed through the rose coloured spectacles traditionally worn by many aficionados.
Take the specs off and what do you see?
1 Financial demise of the Vulcan project.
2 Possible disestablishment of the Red Arrows.
3 Severe cut-backs for the BBMF (if, indeed, it is retained!).
4 A major ‘problem’ at an air-show (see terrorist threats plus the Law of Averages).
If you get only 2 of that 4 then you can count yourselves lucky!!!
Resmoroh (a realist!)
