There is a lot of rubbish and arrant nonsense posted on the forum from time to time (myself not excluded!!). But vampirefan’s last was pure gold – well said that person!!!

But just remember that after we’d chucked the Argies out in 1982 most of the ‘locals’ (‘Bennies’ as they were known, with some justification!) just wanted us all to go away and leave them as they had been before the invasion. Which was, more or less, as feudal serfs to the FIC. But if that’s what they wanted, then fair enough. There was not then the ability on the Islands to realise that it was never, ever, going to be the same way as it was before. And I did 5 tours down there. I was more familiar with the interior of some Airbridge Hercs than the Lyneham crews!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to interrupt with realism!

Nick,
Have you tried the Norwich/Norfolk town/county archivist? They should have an entry in their Sites & Monuments Record (SMR). That is – of course – like so many Local Authority Archaeological departments they consider archaeology in UK ceased with the departure of the Romans. The rest is history!! OK, I exagerrate, but you might be lucky and find a local authority archaelogist who thinks/acts after the Departure Of The Eagles. They are rare – but if you find one they are very good, and will help you.

And especially to all those who will be on duty (both in the air and on the ground – civilian and military) over the Holiday – and all the Emergency/Support services that back them up. Hope you all have a quiet shift/flight/patrol, etc, etc !!

Possibly the original shufti-scope?
OK, I’ll see myself out!

A section on ‘dispersed production’ – i.e. where coach-builders, garages, etc, etc, in towns (not factories) made single panels and/or wiring looms which were assembled somewhere else (as in Spitfire). Don’t know if this was done to any great extent for other aircraft?

Friend of a friend of mine used to produce a pale brown liquid in his Garden Shed. It would take the enamel off your teeth and etch glass away! It’s technical name was ‘Sherry’ but what connection it had ever had with the Iberian Peninsular is difficult to determine!!
Could be used to cleanse cockpit instruments of harmful ticking/glowing dial illuminations?

Re the MB press release!
Not in the slightest bit surprised!

Ole,
Google “Miles M-17”. Wiki will give you all.
Alternatively, you need to get a copy of of the book “Wings Over Woodley” by Julian C Temple.
Your third option is to email MuseumBerksAv@gmail.com where they will have all the details.

And if you want to test how good your sphincter muscle is then try ‘flying’ a Baron 58 at low-level up the Columbia River Gorge to the Hood River on FSX! Not for the faint-hearted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

curlyboy,
I saw it at Evergreen Aviation Museum, McMinville.
When I went there it had been roped, and screened, off from public view while they were giving it some TLC. I hung around and eventually one of the Restorers asked who/what I was. I explained I was ex-UK Mil Met on holiday in Oregon. “Come aboard” he said. I got a full tour of all the guts (no Hard-Hat, no Goggles, no fire-proof suit, no steel-capped boots, etc, – ‘Elf & Safety hadn’t (then) reached Oregon!!). A fantastic afternoon in/on a truly fantastic aircraft.
I could then cope quite adequately with Wife’s, and step-Daughter’s, endless Retail Therapy expeditions!!!!!!!!!

BK,
I presume your last sentence no longer applies now that The Beast is in the Evergreen Aviation Museum, McMinville, Oregon? There’s not a lot of open water in them parts! And it’s 40-odd miles over some pretty rugged country to get to The Oggin. But I – for one – would pay good money to see that monster in the air again!!

AT,
Have a care before you knock CND! Some of us were meteorologists on the now defunct UKWMO (United Kingdom Warning & Monitoring Organisation) and – additionally – were on the NATO equivalent body. CND found many facts that could not be refuted by UK Central Govt because it would have admitted that CG was aware of them!
Those of us who live in the area of Aldermaston, Burghfield, and the roads travelled by the nuclear convoys going to/from the latter might still be concerned not only with past radionuclide releases but also of present/future(terrorist?) releases. Since the demise of UKWMO the problem of ensuring the safety of its citizens from RADHAZ has fallen upon Local Authorities. It does not bode well when, as when one famous Local Authority – in the People’s Republic of South Yorkshire (wherelse?) – declared itself to be “a non nuclear zone”. The staggering disbelief in this nonsense cannot be measured!
Regretfully, I have to tell you that the type of aircraft involved in this accident (and how many rivets it may (or may not) have had between Frames 14 and 16 on the starboard side (only of the Mk II, of course!) is totally and utterly irrelevant.).
The easterly take-off pattern from Greenham went to within a few hundred meters of Burghfield!
A few grams of something “ticking/glowing” in Delgety Bay is niff-naff & trivia by comparison.
Some people need to come into the “real world”!
Respectfully

Re para 2 of post #25. There are a number of specialist hospitals (in many countries) who cater for these persons!
