How about a picture of a barometer?

Dando, Hi,
Regretfully it will not put an end to all this nonsense.
I was, at one stage in my career, involved with the Home Office UKWMO. Now they used to deal with the very top end of radiation!!! But as a result of courses taken whilst involved with UKWMO I can only but agree with you.
However there are a significant number of people/organisations (both official and non-official) who like to create “radiation trouble”. One because it makes them feel important and the other because their jobs depend on it.
If they’d been around when the girls were licking the paint-brushes with which they applied this stuff to the dials, etc, then they might have had cause to complain.
Too many people (some very senior and highly paid!) are involved with Health & Safety. To let this so called problem die goes against their raison d’etre. Also the number of other quangos that they can hop to are reducing.
Sorry, my friend, but a great deal more nonsense is yet to be talked!! I applaud your attempt to reduce the problem to logic and reasoned argument but m’learned friends are making too much money from litigation – reality is irrelevant.

I will NOT, rpt NOT, enjoy 558’s demise. It will simply become a ground airframe – somewhere. It has been too costly to retain as a flying airframe – whatever. Those who wanted it to remain a flying airframe have not contributed enough of their hard earned money to keep it thus. So be it. We live in a so-called democratical society. The Majority have their way. The Minority (which includes 558 supporters at both national, and local, level have to do as they are told). People being told to do what they are told to do is not popular these days. Or do we have to go into detail for those who think otherwise?

At this point – amid all the euphoria (or not) – depending which school you went to, it might be as well to remind all those who are currently wearing rose-coloured spectaclesthat there were (and are!) some of us who were (and are!) of the opinion that there will be “tears before bedtime” in this unpleasant saga before it is finished.
If all you want is to hear a Vulcan howl (if only at an airshow) rather than hear it howl going to do its real job (as I have done) then – as has been proved – it costs a very great deal of money. Professional help is available for those so afflicted. The good doctor has copped a double whammy. His project is about to hit the dust and the number of quangos – to which he might possibly have migrated – has, of recent days, been sharply reduced (and not before time!).
I know this won’t help, but – at some stage – reality does have to rear its ugly head!

It might be a realistic thought to look forward to the time (in the not too distant future!) when all real RAF flying is – to quote the title of this forum – historic aviation!!
All the Squadrons we know will disappear! A few people will be doing what I (and many like me, I suspect) do, which is to “fly” on a computer simulator. Those few remaining members of the RAF will be doing the same thing – i.e. “flying” UAVs from some bunker! It’s a sad thought but, I think, almost inevitable.
All those Squadrons have a long and proud history. And many have a magnificent collection of memorabilia and Squadron Silver accumulated over many years and in many places. It would be a travesty of justice if that were to be sold or (worse still) melted down simply as “surplus to requirements”.
Some considerable thought needs to be taken now to ensure that the historical record does not just disappear!
Or am I being too pessimistically gloomy too early? Some may say I am; but I doubt it!!

PS Inkworm beat me to it. Great minds think alike!
Moggy,
Re post #10.
Bulk order required, I’m afraid, to be distributed to many members of this Forum (and other Fora). Plus, of course, instructions on the use of a dictionary – which may come as a complete surprise to many!!
Regretfully

See post #6. Je reste ma valise!

Blue_2,
We could afford all of those things if you would accept a 20% increase in Income Tax, and VAT. And if all the freeloaders would accept a 90% reduction in their various benefits! Neither ends of the political spectrum are prepared to hammer the banks (who caused all of this) because rich bankers bankroll the political parties. Get real!
Oh, and bin all airshows and air museums.
Resmoroh
David,
Just as a matter of nit-picking which does not answer your questions, but they are Unit Badges – not Crests (heraldically a totally different thing)

RIP indeed. A brave bunch of guys!
But what’s happened to the Test Pilot’s Memorial Website? ‘Somebody’ said they were going to chase up ‘somebody’ in one of the aiviation mags who, supposedly, had all the data. That was in August. Where are we on this one?
TIA

From “Not Much” to “Zero” – to make it look like there’d been a Blitz Raid on the local power station??????????!!!!!!!!!

Sky High,
My Leader (when we were both in uniform) used to say “Peter, what is the detail?”. I used to reply “Boss, I’m not too concerned with the detail. I look at things through the long-term end of the telescope”! This is why I never became either (a) DGMetO, or (b) CAS!
We would then have to put our various skills to erecting this 12 x 12 Met Tent at Otterburn, Ascension, Falkland, and more other evil places than your geographical knowledge can cater for!!
Trust you get the way I’m thinking!!!!!!
Resmoroh
Yes, good news!
But will it’s funding be the same as now? Or will it be reduced? In which case there may be staff losses? Or will the cost of its services be raised to the level that nobody is prepared to pay? At which point the Govt will say “Nobody is using RAFM” so we can bin it? Or DX, or IWM, etc, etc.
As far as the Govt (of whatever politcal hue!) cuts are concerned there are more ways of killing a cat (or museum) than by drowning it in cream!!!
If you think that the QUANGO cuts announced today are the end of it then you are living in a fool’s paradise! Just watch the “salami slicing” that goes on from now!
Read Richard Dannatt’s book. If the Govt (of whatever political hue) is prepared to do that to the real Armed Forces then what hope is there for Military Museums, and Archives?
I’m glad that I did my time (both as an Air Ministry/MoD civilian and RAF Reservist) when I did. You would get short shrift these days!!
Let this be warning to the wise!

Bruce,
I regret to disagree with you. Regardless of the domestic difficulties associated with this appalling event – with which I totally agree. There is, however, a necessity to noise abroad – including on the internet – the problems which may be connected with this crime! Just giving it to “the relevant authorities” is not, in my opinion, good enough. Everybody should be made aware of the possible consequences of storing potentially very valuable aircraft “bits” on their premises. I suspect that your Insurers may also be interested in what you’ve got in your garage?!!
One of the plus factors of the internet is that information can be made known to a vast audience in next to no time (whether that info is accurate is – as we’ve all discovered – up to fate!!).
“the relevant authorities” may decide just to put it in their “Pending ” tray, but if enough noise is made (including that on the internet) than that Pending Tray may not be a sufficient defence to not taking action.
Do not sweep any possible cause of this event under the carpet.
