Some sense is, at last being, talked. I agree with scotavia that “A little less raging . . “ might be appropriate. But I think that ‘jogger321’ should be aware that there have been Project Managers in the military for a very long time. They are actually called Unit (or Detachment) Commanders. If they perform badly then they are sacked by their Superior(s) – and that goes right up to Admiral/General/Air Marshal level. The same occurs in the Civil Service although I will admit that the sacking process there, for inefficiency, can be very slow and cumbersome!! The same happens in the Business/Finance world – where the sackings are somewhat more ‘Instant’!!
If one follows all these little difficulties with 558’s appearance/non-appearance, or certification/non-certification, then they lead, directly, to the OC Vulcan Project (by whatever name). He clearly does not think this is a resigning matter – too much loss of face (and we can’t have that, can we?). He needs to be promoted!(see below) So who is his Superior Officer?, and why has this person not sacked him?
This is not “raging”, it is simply asking – with logic and reasoned argument – why a particular decision has not been taken, and implemented as it should have been. I am not an “armchair expert” in Vulcan matters, but I have had more than 40 years experience in the military/Civil Service equivalent of Project Management. As far as Project/Unit Leaders are concerned I know a “good ‘un” when I see it, and I know a “bad ‘un”. This, I regret to say, comes into the latter category.
“Who will rid us of this troublesome person”? Make him the Civil Governor at Ascension. Very fitting. The “Saints” will soon sort him out!!!

It is just faintly possible that somebody, reading and posting today, on this Forum owes his/her life to Neville Shute Norway.
As a very junior meteorologist I learned (I think by reading “Round The Bend”) that the carrying out of a task – however boring, and mundane (like Met obs!) – could be thought of as almost a religious act! I think in that case it was teaching sub-Continent aero-engineers to do locking-wires up properly. I am not religious, but those thoughts stayed with me during my entire meteorological working life. I have to admit that I wasn’t always as good as promised, but the thought was there!
There, I’ve bared my soul! Anybody the same?

The more I read of the Errors & Omissions of those either directly responsible for the Vulcan, or those in a supporting role (for whatever reason(s)), then the more I am reminded of the phrase that they appear not to be able to organise a bacchanalian revelry in brewery! Let alone write properly spelled, and/or grammatical, English!

I would just like to re-echo what Auster Fan has said. Totally fascinating. It makes having to wade through all the detritus (and trivia) worth while. It is even more humbling to note that here is a lady who does not use English as her first language writing, in English, superbly. Her spelling and syntax are of the highest order – much, much, better than many (resident in UK) can achieve.
Well done Kev and Sandra. One of the highlights of the year on this Forum.

At least, Peter Dimmock and Raymond Baxter knew what they were talking about! Makes a pleasant change from some of the modern TV presenters – and even forumites!! (No offence meant!)

The “Control Tower” on the roof is/was a TGRI (Tactical Ground Radio Installation). It was inhabited by “TacATC”. ‘Tack-attack’ did the Air Tragic bizz in far flung parts. They may still do so – TCW pse reply. The Container (on the left roof) was OC Ops’ “bothie”. OC Ops’s tended to change. One may come in at morning briefing and require a full meteorological breakdown. Another would come to the Met Office window (behind the two right hand – as viewed – Landrovers) he would point to a bit of his Combat Kit jacket which was green, then look in through the Met Office window and put an interrogative ‘thumbs-up’ sign. This indicated that “was the weather going to be Green or better”. If we said “Yes” (thumbs up)
he would step back so as to be seen by Air Tragic Control in their greenhouse on the top floor and shout “Launch the fleet”. Various Phantoms would then do their bit to reduce my (now) hearing!
The reason why Met didn’t always get it right was because various Plonkers would park their Landrovers outside our only window. This is not rubbish. This is how it actually worked.

Very minor correction to Post #1 in this thread:
modified to permit direct flights between Ascension Island and Port Stanley.” At least one non-prod pitched up at Stanley. Unfortunately one of The Times defence correspondents was at Stanley. He asked “How did that get here?”. OC Ops and the MoD PR Minder looked at each other! The Met Man said “Favourable winds”. “Then how” said the smart Times man “will it get back?”. Look of consternation between OC Ops and MoD PR Minder. Met Man said – with straight face – “We will wait for favourable winds”. Smiles all round! Everybody knew how it had got there but nobody had actually lied to the Press. Or if they had, it was a mere Reserve Officer (and they were expendable!!!).
But, to answer your original question, I suspect a Mr Marshall at Cambridge Airport has the precise details!!

There has GOT to be a web-site/forum dealing with rude songs. Where else could one get the definitve version(s) of “The Ball Of Kirriemuir”, “Eskimo Nell”, or “She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain When She Comes”, etc, etc??. Many of the Wing, or Sqn, songs that I came across were very often well known tunes to which a set of vulgar lyrics had been fitted – invented by someone of a poetical brilliance. Who can forget the words of “Cats On The Rooftops, Cats On The Tiles, Cats With Their Ar$oles Wreathed in Smiles”? Supposedly penned by Noel Coward. There is a whole new world of research here!

Why not just electrify it (with or without a Warning Notice)?

    Wyvernfan, Hi,
There are several instances on the whole of that web-site that indicate that these guys were either extremely brave (knowing the possible problems), or extremely dedicated (knowing the possible problems). But they went and did the bizz.
In any case they do (in my opinion) rank alongside the guys who were being shot at!

Don’t wish to hijack this thread, but the mention of Harwell (and this time) reminds me that it was from that airfield, late in the evening of 5th Jun, that the Para Pathfinders took off to mark the DZ’s/LZ’s in Normandy. The description of that take-off is one of the most evocative bits of WW2 writing I’ve read (read Chester Wilmot “The Struggle For Europe” – brilliant!).
