Do you know of the existence at Haddenham/Thame of Aircon Ltd?
These folk used to manufacture standard cabins to house the RAF’s (and maybe others?) radio equipment.
A 6 foot cube cabin (all properly insulated – both electrically and against the atmosphere) could house a wide variety of the RAF’s tactical radio eqpt. The ex-members of the RAF Tac Comms Wing (TCW) will, no doubt remember the various TGRI(AT) – Tactical Ground Radio Installation (Air Transportable) – cabins that housed all sorts of Tx and Rx equipments – including the Met Sect!
If anyone (unlikely!) requires any further details then just shout!

    Martin, Hi,
A few things about Little Rissington that may not appear in the ‘usual’ airfield summaries/histories.
1 It was the location of one of the very earliest Met Office Automatic Weather Stations (I put it in!).
2 At one stage one of the hangars housed a complete airtransportable US Field Hospital. I was told it could either be used in situ, or taken to bits and flown elsewhere.
3 I was told that one of the hangars was used for the filming of the TV series “Blake’s Seven” (shows my age!!).
4 It was, at one stage, the base barracks for some elements of the Royal Irish Rangers. A significant percentage of the accommodation did not defy their attentions.
All the above came to me via the local Property Services Agency bloke and the ‘Key Wallah’ in the Guardroom. Make what you will of them!

Perhaps it is sometimes forgotten that the two disciplines can work exceptionally well together. The rebuild of the Elba Comet and the Lockerbie 747 required aviation technical skills and archaeological intellectual rigour of the highest order. Aviation archaeology possibly at its very best – and used to determine what was not known from the existing Makers Manuals.
It may also be the case that “classical” archaeologists are dismissive of aviation recovery projects because there are very few research (or excavation) grants available – unless Govt funds are available after a very major aviation event alluded to above. This is, again, evident at the levels of archaeology where Local Authority Archaeologists, or Museum Curators, look upon Industrial Archaeology as that part of the discipline to be avoided at all costs! I certainly got that impression when I did my training!

All this detailed aviation dates/times/decisions is irrelevant.
What is relevant is the question why this ancient, and not very successful, politician needs to take his circus on the road at all.
The answer lies, I think, in a serious character flaw which requires that he still thinks he is important and needs media exposure, and waving at cameras whilst getting out of Ministerial cars.
The question that should really be asked is by Benn himself – “Why has nobody come to my meeting?” If the citizens of Coventry have any sense they will make sure that he asks it. He’s past his Sell-By date. You know it. I know it. He needs to know it!

    Hello All,
Thankyou (as a mere participant) for all your comments, opinions, and ideas. It has been a pleasure to read them – even if, at times, I do not entirely agree! There has been sane, logical, reasoned argument without any of the petty slanging matches that tend to spoil some other threads. Not only that but the grammar and spelling were of the highest order! Makes a pleasant change!

No! I regret to say that aircraft enthusiasts should only be allowed to possibly pin-point the precise spot where an a/c may have impacted the ground. They should NOT, under any circumstances, be allowed to take part in the possible excavation unless they have had archaeological training AND are under the direction of qualified supervisors. There is nothing worse than an enthusiastic amateur!
As to there being human remains in a single-crewed a/c that impacted the ground at very high speed then there might be a case – on intellectual grounds – for recovering “the bits” and re-uniting the Pilot with his mates in any Sqn, or National, Cemetery – subject, always, to the wishes of the NoK.
Where the a/c was multi-crewed you must realise that they were all volunteers and my thoughts – on intellectual grounds – are to leave ’em where they lie, undisturbed, with their mates, but to mark the spot in some specific way.
During my archaeological training it became apparent that after the Roman invasion of Britain there were several Iron Age hill-forts that had been ‘done over’ by the Romans. There were Iron Age burials on the site of the battle-field – War Graves. On some occasions it was obvious that The Fallen had been buried (albeit in makeshift graves) but in accordance with their “religious rites” – a small offering for whatever ‘afterlife’ they believed in. This ‘clearing up of the battlefield’ was done by our equivalent of their Warrant Officers (assuming any on the losing side survived!). It also happened at Goose Green in the Falklands!
What I’m trying to say is that if I’d been shot in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, or trodden on an anti-personnel mine on Stanley Airfield, then I think that my wishes would have been “Just leave me here (possibly with any of my mates), and don’t disturb me – not even in the pursuit of technical accuracy”.
It all depends upon which end of the intellectual telescope you are looking though when you make pronouncements on this subject! War Graves are a very difficult subject, and depend on the intellectual mood at the time – and in the future.
How, for example, should the graves of The Fallen in the recent “troubles” in N Ireland be treated. Pause, I would think for some considerable thought! Not an easy subject.
    Just one KOS’s thoughts.

When I did my archaeological training (and I’m old enough to be considered “A Relic”!!) the discovery of human remains – however old (or new!) – had to be reported (at least in England & Wales) to the Police and/or the Coroner. I don’t know what the regulations are in Scotland or N Ireland – but I would suggest fairly similar. As Malcolm says, there have to be screens, etc, and things can go on for a very long time. If, when approaching ‘knocking off time’ your gentle scrape of the trowel exposed the grinning skull of some long-dead human my elders and betters told me you covered it up again and re-discovered it next day!!
I also note (someone will correct me if I’m wrong) that, under PMRA 1986, MoD will not issue a licence to dig if human remains are likely to be encountered. Ditto for UXB’s – for obvious reasons!!
However, I was also interested, when going through the various ships to note the Storaa case. ‘RFA’s’ are now on the list (who’s crews fall between RN and MN), as are ‘SS’s’. I do not wish to hijack this very interesting thread, but what about ‘HMT’s’ – His/Her Majesty’s Troopships (or should it be Transports?). Some of us are likely to have gone to our Final Debriefs before all the files on HMT Lancastria are made public. Now there, I would suggest, is a War Grave par excellence!

The Daily Mail and/or The Mail on Sunday only ‘done it’ because it was a handy weapon with which to beat the current left-ish Govt we currently suffer from for not providing the funds necessary to keep 558 in the air.
In the event that, at the next Election, the colour of the Govt changes from Pink-ish to Blue-ish (perhaps even with a tinge of Yellow-ish!) then don’t expect the Mail to make life difficult for any new Govt. They – the Mail – are not Vulcan Fans! This 558 episode is simply something that has come along to enable them to pursue their political aims – nothing more than that!

    Nashio,
This is ALL getting far too predictable! There is a definite smell of rat upon the air. Somebody is creaming off some of the monies promised/given. And to what end?
I suspect that the Tin Triangle itself is the least of their worries, or concerns. Who will puts odds on a similar unseemly scrabble for money in 6/12 months? Plemingomania?!!!
Better, now, to turn 558’s ignition key to the ‘Off’ position and throw it over the airfield fence. Seen it all before!
    Regretfully

    John, Hi,
Many thanks for that info – much appreciated. Do you know if the Sqn ORBs for the period are with the Australian Nat Archives – or are they elsewehere?

OK, so nobody seems to know which RAAF a/c were at Broome in Jun-Nov 52. So can I put my question another way? Which RAAF Sqns were equipped with Lincolns and Dakotas in Jun-Nov 52?
I am attempting to find the Australian airborne Met Recce capabilities for Op HURRICANE (The UK’s first nuclear bomb) exploded on the Montebello Is on 3 Oct 52. The Australians also apparently provided the airborne Met Recce element of Op TOTEM (2 Tests at Emu Field, nr Maralinga) in Oct 53.
The airborne Met Recce element for the next tests (Op MOSAIC at Montebello) May/Jun 56 was provided by RAF 269 Sqn Shacks (with 202 Sqn MAOs) based at Darwin.
The Australians seem to be rather reticent about the Met developments between TOTEM and MOSAIC. I suspect there was some high level “grief”. On-line publications by the Australian BoM in 2001 seem to indicate that whatever happened then still rankles in Oz today.
We search simply for the truth – or the nearest approximation thereto that can be found.
    TIA

    Peter,
Thankyou for your timely comment on this thread. There are some considerable political machinations going on. Some (even many) people, on this thread, seem to be solely concerned with scoring points off each other without producing Chap/Verse/Line to back-up their opinions – so be it. But there are peripheral opinions that still have some considerable bearing on the overall picture with regard to 558 and its future.
Whether the money collections/pledges are anything to do with the future of 558 I have my doubts! The politics are more important, and some of the contributors to this thread appear to be politically somewhat naïve. There are some aviation buffs who do not want to be constrained by the real (financial) world.
And, Peter, your point could have been made – for those who can read between the lines – without shouting in emboldened script!
