And just where does the double-page spread foto of the Vulcan cockpit in today’s Mail on Sunday fit into the big scheme of things?

    David Burke, Hi,
Q: “Did it play a role in shorterning the Falklands War?”
A: “Sure as hell it did”.
The Argies knew, at the moment that we bombed the Stanley runway from Ascension, that the Brits were very serious (as long as Maggie Thatcher was in charge).
They (and the Americans) knew that if push came to shove we could bomb Buenos Aires. And had the ability to do so. It sharpened minds – and brought a small degree of reality into Argentine military/political thinking. What the Argie politicos, and macho militarists, had envisaged as taking the Argentine civil population’s minds off their home inadequate civil government (i.e. the invasion of the Falklands) was suddenly shown to be highly dangerous. High pensions, and landed estates, for the Generals/Admirals/Air-Marshals suddenly became very dodgy! They packed it in fairly quickly. Not entirely unknown for politicos/military in them parts when confronted with decisions that make their comfortable retirements slightly suspect!
    I need say no more

    Hello All,
Mni tks for all the info, links, and tips. Much appreciated.
Ballykellybrat (and anyone else) – I would much appreciate any details of the BISMUTH A, B, & C tracks out of RAAF Pearce (if you have them!) – and of any other regular Met Recce tracks flown.
    Tks again

    aeronut 2008, Hi,
Thank goodness somebody knows what I’m talking about!
No hurry! Israel can keep you till end-Mar.
I was at the debrief of the drop of (the only?) RAF 3 x ULLA somewhere on Salisbury Plain. The a/c Captain said “That’s the only 3 x ULLA I’ll ever do! The aircraft was totally uncontrollable for about 30 secs after the last platform left the a/c”!!!!!!!!!!!!
And, for a single ULLA, the crowning glory has to be on one NATO Firepower Demo (again on Salisbury Plain at – I think – Knighton Down) when all the NATO Generals and Colonels were assembled in all their various National fineries this Herc roared in, across their viewing seating, and dropped the platform right in front of them. Unfortunately the grass was still a bit wet and there was this tiny gorse bush. The platform hit the gorse bush and veered off-course towards the VIP seating enclosure, and failed to come to a stand-still!
You have never seen so many multi-national Generals and Colonels vacate their seats and disappear over the back of the viewing mound. Never let it be said that Senior Officers are not fit – they moved at twice the speed of sound!!!! I would love to see that again!!

    pagen01,
My RAF F1394 records that I served as an NSA SAC Meteorologist from 28 Oct 54 to 17 Nov 56. The last 18 months of which were spent at El Adem. During that time Shacks were detached from either Malta or Gibraltar. They flew long sorties (a) over the Med looking, supposedly, for Gun-Runners into Cyprus (there was the beginnings of Unpleasantness there at the time!), and (b) over the Sahara Desert looking, supposedly, for Gun-Runners from Egypt/Sudan into the French territories of NW Africa (there was the beginnings of Unpleasnatness there at the time)!
I remember the mid-upper turret well. It was from there that I did my Met obs (with help from the Navs position for pressure/air-temp, etc). It was, if my memory serves me right, very adjacent to the a/c galley. Met Assistants make very good Galley Slaves – or so I was told by a very large Flt Sgt Signaller!! The off-duty boredom of a National Service Airman at El Adem had to be experienced to be believed! Going on a 12-hr Shack trip (straight off a 12-hr Met night shift – and coming back to another Met night-shift) was a much better way of spending one’s time. It was brilliant. I learned why I did what I did in the Met Office to be of value to those who had to shepherd the traditional “20,000 rivets flying in loose formation” about the sky! It was early Customer Appreciation – and very valuable.

    Ballykellybrat, Hi,
Tks also. I have to admit that all of my Shack flying time was on A Real Shack – i.e. one which still had a mid-upper turret!!!!
This project is, at the moment, still at the factual assemblage stage. When we’ve hammered all the bits together (and, maybe, discarded some) then we’ll see if it can be test-flown into an article!
    Tks again.

    pagen01,
Tks dat. It’s a start. We can now begin to go down the “nitty-gritty” road as to who flew what, where, and when, and for which purpose! Having established those bits of the jig-saw we can begin to work out how they all fit together! Problem; we don’t have the Box Lid with the picture on it!!
    Mni tks yr help

    Chox,
Best logical, reasoned, but optimistic, outcome I’ve read for some time.
Who’ll give me (and the rest of you!) odds on that being the outcome? Or is there a more pessimistic outcome?
Now I have no axe to grind. I did Vulcans at various airshows (including IAT Greenham). I was on an overseas tour of duty when the Vulcan laid down 21 x 1000lb iron bombs on Hell’s Acre Farm Bombing Range not far from El Adem – very, very, impressive!!! More importantly, I was part of the team(s) that were on Ascension when the Vulcan went and “did the bizz at Stanley”. It was commonly rumoured in The Exiles Club that Chief Tech(s) had been despatched to some a/c bone-yard in the USA to saw vital bits off the refuelling probe of one of theirs to either make patterns, or instal, on one of ours!!
All magic stuff! But we ain’t using ballistas anymore! I’m proud of my very limited contribution to the Vulcan history. But that’s where it ends. There are a very, very, few Vulcan afficionados who would pay good money (either theirs, or someone else’s) to keep 558 flying. Let’s be realistic.

    What Odds?

At the height of the Cold War it was often said that the Optimist learns Russian, but the Pessimist learns Chinese – and so it has transpired.
I have enjoyed this thread, with all its supporters and denigrators hurling verbal hand-grenades at each other from the safety of their reinforced computer trenches.
I have just read the good Dr Pleming’s CV. Much of his experience (including his PhD) is about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard when it comes to aviation project (and person) management. It shows! I wonder who appointed him?
To add some spice to the debate how about some brave soul contacting William Hill (or similar) and asking for odds on whether 558 will ever fly again, or become a ground-runner, or go to the USA, or just rot and become Pots ‘n Pans! These could be updated weekly, or daily, as FACTS (rather than mere opinions or suppositions) emerge. The Mods on this Forum could have a little window with the current odds displayed. Bookies hate to lose money!
And you might like to put your own money where your mouths have been!!

    Oshawayflyboy ‘n Hornchurch,
It didn’t matter which donk you had! The low-level legs of met recce sorties were flown at 950 mb (about 1800 ft ASL). Obs were done every 50 nm. At every 4th Ob position the a/c descended to 50 ft (yes! 50 ft) above sea level in order to obtain as accurate a Mean Sea Level Pressure as possible. If the waves were +/- 50 ft (or more!) work it out for yourself!
If one was at 18000 ft over Germany and one donk went on the blink there was time for the Eng to scratch his bum and work out what to do! At 50 ft ASL it only needed one of yr donks (of either breed) to cough slightly and you were in the Oggin!!
I don’t know about the Halifaxes but I do know that some of the later post-war Hastings’, on Met Recce, came back from BISMUTH missions with salt-spray having encrusted windscreens and leading edges!! Read “Even The Birds Were Walking” by Kington and Rackliff, 2000, Tempus, ISBN 075242016X. They went and “did the bizz” in conditions that I would not allow your dog to take you for a walk!!!!!!!!!!

    Met Recce Shacks

    Hello All,
    Two questions about Shacks:
1 Were any more Shacks modded for Met Recce on Grapple other than MR 1 VP263? Seems odd that if that was the case then if that a/c goes u/s then yr Met Recce capability has gone Tango Uniform (and Grapple was a fairly big Operation!!!).
2 Does ‘special fitment’ mean the installation of Autolycus? I know what that did – but was there any other piece of kit that had to be referred to by some code phrase of the day?
    TIA

    Philip,
    Dead right my friend!!!
    Those who Can: Do
    Those who Can’t Do; Teach
Those who Can’t Teach: Teach Teachers
Those who Can’t Teach Teachers: become Administrators on Quangos (or similar) and/or Politicians! (Spot the difference?)
As a Retired Govt Servant I have to say that if, in the future, I see any of the Admin names from this Project (and I totally exempt the Spanner Bashers) associated with any other Project then it will not get my support or money.
This Project will become famous. In the Quango Leaders Training School – and there must be one (we’ve just not yet discovered it!) – this must surely be an example of How Not To Do It!
    Regretfully

    Bruggen 130, Hi,
I suspect that if and/or when the UK Govt changes it’s colour then the Branson munificence may also change its colour?!! That letter in the Daily Telegraph is, in my opinion, no more than drowning men clutching at straws. I wonder who put them up to it?
But to more immediate matters. The TVOC site won’t answer. The Pprune site is quoting XH558 as being “grounded”, and the staff having been given 1 month’s notice (I presume this latter is done when a company is about to go Tango Uniform in order to avoid costly litigation (wish I was a lawyer)).
Does anybody (a) know what is really going on, and (b) be prepared to utter reality to the Press and The Net? Or are they all running around like chickens with their heads cut off wishing somebody had shouted “Somebody do something” before the head was removed.
Makes the current banking ego/greed/disaster look like a spat at a children’s tea-party.
    Appalled
