    Qldspitty, Hi,
Mni tks for that. Was the release machanism for PRU canopies much different from ‘normal’ Spitfires? I would be grateful for a brief reply as my technical knowlege of the interior of Spitfire cockpits is somewhat limited(!!).

    XL569,
As one who has done their bit, operationally, with the Vulcan I applaud your approach to fund-raising (albeit VERY late in the day). This sort of thing should have come from TVOC months ago – but didn’t. A lot of other things should have come from TVOC but didn’t. Is a pattern beginning to emerge here? The 24-hr Scramble is not the answer. You know it, we know it, and They know it!
558, I suspect, has had its last ride. It might just possibly be instructive to have Doc Plemming, et al, hauled before a Parliamentary Committee to explain what they did with all that HLF money! Except that the various Parliamentary Committees are up to the eyeballs with trying to find out what happened to the UK banking system. The same problems that infected that might well have been present in TVOC. I don’t know, but – sure as hell – we need an Enquiry of some sort to determine who did what, where, and when – and with who’s money!
    Great pity.
Luckily I don’t need to see 558 flying. I did my (very minor) bit when the Vulcan went to to The Bizz on Op CORPORATE. It was enough!!!
    Regretfully,

I would have thought that the decades of incrustations of Galoise smoke would be much more hazardous than asbestos! It might even be eating into the armour plating!!
I hope, whilst they are disassembling this vessel, they might keep a picture of Nelson’s “Victory” in full view as it is reduced to Pots ‘n Pans!

I’m not trying to hi-jack this thread, but does anyone know what happened to the Auster AOP 9 that the AOC 38 Grp (then AVM “Mickey” Martin – of Dambusters fame) had, reputedly, won from Gen Sir Frank King (then GOC 3 Div) in a card game!! I know it was at Odiham because I (as a Met Man!) was the navigator when this a/c flew to Manby for one of the 38 Gp Execs to give a lecture at the College Of Air Warfare.

Nice to see some pix of the Beast! Many happy(?) hours spent therein!

    Steve,
The good old Willis & Holliss lists all the military airfield runway surfaces as at Dec 1944 – in a very small font!! Might need some research to work out the precise differences between, say, “Concrete & asphalt” and “Concrete covered with asphalt”!!! Bound to be an expert on the subject lurking somewhere – there always is!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hello All,
I am about to expose my ignorance of some of the finer details of aviation hardware and I hope you will forgive me, and give me a simple answer!
Just what the hell is a propellor cuff?

    Scott,
There was an attempt in the early 70’s to instal on the VC10’s (and other RAF Transport a/c IIRC) a one-way system of sending charts to a/c in flight. These were using small 9-inch wet-facsimile machines (forerunners of today’s FAX system). The data would have been transmitted using the Support Command world-wide HF SSB comms system (“ARCHITECT”). Don’t know what became of the trials. I suspect ‘Not A Lot’!!!!

I think that Moggy is the only one on this Forum who is gently trying to indicate to all you ‘blue sky enthusiasts’ that the game is well and truly up.
The entire financial system of the western world is collapsing about our ears. 99.99% of the UK population don’t give a monkey’s toss about XH558. The 00.01% who do care about XH558 cannot see reality when it is staring them in the face. The talk of finding major corporate funding at this time can only be entertained for that very same quality – entertainment. It is laughable – even if the laughter is somewhat high-pitched and nervous. The suggestion that the money already spent on XH558 would have been better spent on any number of minor, and insignificant, aviation historical projects is risible in the extreme!
The only way to make any money by/with/from XH558 is to saw it into small pieces and sell them as memorabilia. The 00.01% (above) will buy the bits – good luck to them. But I suspect that there may be a sizeable amount left over. Some enterprising lot may buy up the remainder, turn it into pots & pans (stamped “Ex-XH558”) and make a fortune!
I regret that I am the harbinger of bad news in that reality is about to intrude on the dreams of a few enthusiasts. Pity. But so be it!

    Sq/L Scramble,
Mni tks for the response – which is, I have to say, somewhat puzzling. Not the cricket bit, per se, but the fact that Crickinfo have him playing for the Army(!), and India(!), in 1934/35. The next info I have on him is that he was playing for the RAF at cricket in UK, in Jul 1937 (Times Archive) as a 30-yr old Leading Aircraftman. The Times then charts his career through their cricket scores. The Inter-Service matches were reported in the same detail as Test Matches and the County scores – with particular detail on getting the Service Ranks correct! Cpl by the summer of 1938, and Flt Sgt by the summer of 1947. So, at some stage, he must have been promoted Sgt (probably during WW2).
There is obviously more in this bloke than meets the eye!
    Thanks for yr help

Scorpion 63 is being a bit disingenuous. Govts (particularly the UK) have always been able to invent ‘reasons’ for anything – and this applies to a/c purchase, etc.
I was at Benson when the TQF Andovers were going to be replaced by this new-fangled BA146 thingy. There was some grizzling by the Lefties about the cost. The then Captain of TQF (Archie Winskill) said “If they’d let me take the TQF Andovers – complete with the Royal fit – to the USA I could sell them to the highest bidder, and probably clear a significant amount of the National Debt”!! Alas “They” wouldn’t let him!

It should also not be forgotten that Miles was similarly disliked by Whitehall Mandarins for not doing as they were told. Handley Page “rescued” Miles only for both of them to go down the tubes! Two birds with one shot!!!

    Neil,
It’s only about 15 miles from Farnborough to Woodley (E of Reading). The Museum of Berkshire Aviation has some very rare Miles bits&pieces. Not only that, but the guys in there (admittedly about 5 yrs ago) were extremely helpful!! In answer to any question, if they didn’t know then they knew who did! Don’t know what the entrance fee is nowadays, but I knew I’d got value for money when I went there. Good coffee too!
