Personally, I would prefer that the Mods, and/or Webmaster, gave us as much information as possible to keep us free of the machinations of the spammers, and/or Forum destructors!

Just to put the activities of these spammers/destructors into context, it might be noted that in the world of computer hackers the very fact that he/she/it/they have managed to penetrate the safety systems of whatever website might just – in their world – be the equivalent of finding a complete Stirling (with 4 zero-timed engines), under a reinforced hill-side hangar somewhere in Nania! It gives them a buzz! They are not agin aviation research. Some of them are, eventually, brought to book. Hauled up in the courts and sentenced. Their computer expertise is soon used by ISPs (and even Govts!) to enhance their (and our!!!) safety procedures.
Just bear in mind the two mythical departments of the UK industry/military in WW2. One was responsible for Armour Piercing ammunition. The other was responsible for Armour Plating. As soon as one invented a Round that would go through the existing Armour Plating, then those guys were asked to provide plating that stopped that round. And so on for ever!
The spammers/destructors are (a) technically very adroit, but (b) intellectually lacking!

    Creaking Door,
Absolutely correct! Due to pilot unfamiliarity with ‘switch positions’ on that particular Mark of a/c.
These things happen (but shouldn’t). The most appalling aspect of that accident was that the Sidewinder was fired into a Mortar Platoon of the Welsh Guards (who were snow clearing) – and who had previously been decimated during the landing/air-attack at Bluff Cove.
We didn’t win the Falklands – they lost it (they made bigger and better military decision errors (i.e. ****-ups) than we did – and we made a lot!!).

I don’t know what stage the Harriers were in when they were at RAF Stanley. But what I do know is that they were ‘parked’ on the other side of the Stanley runway from the ATC Tower. On night-shifts on the ground floor of the tower one could see the Harriers across the airfield. They were “fired up” electrically/electronically all night. One could see the anti-collision beacons flashing away. What else was ‘fired up’ (INAS, etc, etc) I do not know – but it seemed slightly odd!! We need a Harrier expert to tell us all!!!!

I asked for information with regard to personnel on this thread. Error of judgement. Too difficult for you.
If I’d asked whether the flange brackets on the Canberra were Mk 3’s – or 4a’s, or whether the floggle-toggle was installed by E-E at Preston, or by some other technical organisation, then I would have had 50 responses inside 12 hours. But not so!
I see where the priorities on this Forum actually lie. Hardware – forget the drivers/pax, although one can see that weasel words are used with regard to personnel involved in prangs. I don’t expect to win ’em all – but I do expect a fair hearing!!

Commission “Terminated” 23 Jun 55 (i.e. 6 months after the incident!).
Does anyone know precisely what is meant by “Terminated” in LG Speak, or Air Ministry/MoD Speak.
One can normally “Resign”, or “Relinquish” a Commission. I take it that Relinquish is purely voluntary on the part of the individual. Resign – and there may have been some “pressure” applied from On High. Terminated seems to me to be for reasons which fall short of Summaries of Evidence leading to a Court Martial.
But does anybody actually know? This is not the first time I’ve come across Terminated when researching individuals (both aircrew and ground Branches).

1/8th Bit – or may I just call you 1/8th?
The only Bombing Range I know of in the Oxford area was Otmoor. We were using that quite a lot when I were nobbutt a lad with Canberra’s at Wittering in the early 50’s. However, by the early 50’s Otmoor was for inert rounds only (concrete filled 500 pounders!). But, in WW2, “They” may have decided that both Town, and Gown, would have to put up with a bit of bang!

    1/8th Bit, Hi,
Not a lot of help. Northleach (Willis & Holliss) opened in 1942. By Dec 44 it was in 23 Group (Training Command) as a subsidiary a/f, or RLG, to Stoke Orchard. Stoke Orchard (and, presumably, Northleach) was the home to 3 Glider Training School flying Masters, Oxfords, and Hotspurs.
So your Beaufort is not likely to have been based locally. But if it was (in Training Command!!) it is unlikely to have been flogging around the place with live bombs/ammo!!!!!!!!
Looks like you may have to go through the various Beaufort Sqns to find a ‘loss’ in this place. Alternatively, the Northleach News/Clarion/Bugle/Gazette/Advertiser(whatever) may have something tucked away in their Archives.
    Good luck

    Hi, All,
When The Gentlemen From Hereford arrived at El Adem for one of their regular desert training exercises (in the early 1950’s) they produced, on one occasion, these dull pink Landrovers. The Crabfats said (obviosuly out of the hearing of said Gentlemen!!) “Oooh, Ducky. Do like the colour – do your handbags match?”!!!!
But seriously, one of these dull pink Landrovers “disappeared” when driven only a few hundred metres into the ‘bundoo’! The bog-standard ‘sand-painted’ RAF Landrovers were visible for miles!!!!!!!!!! They (The Hooligans) even brought Landrovers (and some Boffins) in 3 different shades of this dull pink so that the Boffins, and us Airmen who had to accompany The Hooligans on their nefarious exploits, could decide which shade was most effective, under what lighting conditions, and against what background? (Who would have been a National Service Airman Meteorologist at El Adem? My mates were in the NAAFI back at the ranch whilst I was playing Silly B*****s somewhere between Tobruk and Kufra with The Gentlemen!!!!!)
    Who discovered this pink?
Why did Air Forces not use it on the upper surface(s) of parked a/c?

    Enrique, welcome!
It is not often one gets the chance to talk to “the other side”.
You will know that in Argentina (in 1982) a lot of meteorological information was transmitted using HF radio-teleprinter, and radio-facsimile, systems. These same systems were used to communicate lists of alphanumeric meteo observations, and meteo charts, to your forces in the Falklands/Malvinas.
We were monitoring these on Ascension as you were using your normal HF transmission frequencies.
Our Russian colleagues just happened to have a “trawler” near Ascension. It was transmitting the “10 tone music” on the frequencies in an attempt to stop us intercepting your transmissions.
My question is – did this also cause any problems for your Meteo in Port Stanley?
    Regards

We are now into the “Cloud Cuckoo Land” of airshow locations. OC RAF Cottesmore would, no doubt, have the conniptions at the thought of The Great Unwashed invading his/her airfield. Cottesmore is in the reducing number of Operational Airfields. Do not give them more problems than they already have – part-time Ministers of Defence permitting!!
Taking events to Sculthorpe would enable the organisers to control all aspects (‘Elf & Safety, etc). The Natives are friendly – provided they are treated with a modicum of respect!
The Whole World does NOT actually do – or wants to do – what ‘airshow enthusiasts’ want for any event/time. The Whole World actually lives in the Real World – or have I committed a huge sin by mentioning this obvious fact on line. I suspect so!!!

    Keith,
Logical, well thought out, and – if I may say so – a “Good Idea”. It would, in my estimation, be a good location for ALL the airshows (whether they be technical, commercial, or simply visual!).
Airspace, arrival/departure, problems are reduced to a minimum. Little noise, etc, problems – except to the Local Natives (and there aren’t too many of those in that neck of the woods!).
Stand by for hundreds of posts which presume to tell you why Sculthorpe is a “Bad Idea”. Read them carefully – Vested Interests may just (and there’s a surprise!!) could just be responsible.

If THEY want the paying peasants to cough up more cash then THEY are going to have to come clean as to how those contributions are being spent. This needs to be done Up Front, and in Capital Letters, and presented to the public, not hidden away in the small print of an Annual Report.
If some, or all, of the Management Board are living the life of Riley then We (the paying peasants) need to know.
This will determine the rate of public contribution. If, for example, the public think that Pleming, et al, are fleecing the system then if they decide that this is not a good thing, the money will dry up and XH558 will sit – for eternity – on the ground.
120K is considerably more than six times my pension as a Govt scientific civil servant (AND RAF Reserve Officer). I did my bit with Vulcans, etc, when it mattered – i.e. in the Falklands Unpleasantness.
There is something not quite right about all this. I cannot write it here for fear of being sued – but I suspect that most of the readers/posters of/on the board know what I mean.

I also presume that Pleming’s 2008 pay rise will not be subject, similarly, to the rest of us on Govt pensions whereby our annual increase is linked to the September cost of inflation. I’ll bet a considerable amount of your pension that the Sept rate of inflation is at a staggeringly low rate. Funny thing that!

[QUOTEIn all your dealings you need to ensure that in written communications your spelling and grammer is correct as you will not be taken seriously by any professional if you mis-spell words. As I said, I am not having a go just being realistic. Write any documents in a word processor, particulary if your writing is poor and use the spell check facility. After this check the document yourself to ensure that the spell checker has not changed the words incorrectly and get someone else to read it over. I once had a boss who would read all the letters and documents that had been provided to him for signing. If he located a spelling error the offending item went to the bottom of the pile and you were called in just before closing time to re-do the letter so that you had to work late. My correspondence is not perfect but improved after that happened to me! I am also aware that if applying for a job, you make spelling mistakes in the application, your chances of succcess are somewhat deminished, even if writing documents is not part of the job. The thinking is along the lines of:- If the job applicant cant be bothered to spell correctly, wear clean shoes or make an effort to find out about the organisation they are applying to for a position, how reliable and accurate are they likely to be with their work and timekeeping![/QUOTE]

    Quite!!
