Absolutely Brilliant!!
And the last paragraph I totally, and utterly, agree with. Those of us who have done ‘shifts’ over Xmas will realise just what that means!!

Still the finest, and best looking, a/c we ever made!

Grahame, Hi,
Quite a lot of info via Google – provided you key-in the correct UK a/c reg letters – (http://www.sheppeywebsite.co.uk/index.php?id=119,
http://www.cnapg.net/freighter.htm,
http://glostransporthistory.visit-gloucestershire.co.uk/JetAgeRMC_Bristol170.htm). But as Ross says, looks like a TNA visit! Best of luck,

I regret that the towers here at Tottering Towers are not tall enough for peregrines to nest. If they were they might appear on LHR radar! But I would be grateful for even a few ‘Guest Appearances’ by the odd peregrine to discourage them wood pigeons! With onions under a short-crust pastry, with madeira gravy, is the best for pigeons!!

Moggy, you may well be right. I go along with the DDT stuff (read the book “And No Birds Sing”). Countryfile, years ago, used to be a technically informative programme about country matters and was, therefore, very enjoyable. Nowadays, though, it is mostly a vehicle for the airing of any number of political views some of which are strange (by people ditto). The ‘Adam’s Farm’ section is what it should be about, but that section gets smaller and smaller – viz, last Sunday when it was absent. Blaming anything on the RAF was/is always good fun for the Great Unwashed. Like Magistrates and Judges it is one of those things sent to try us!!!

Possibly even “their” beams, etc.

There were far too many Walter Adamson’s in the BMD indices to even try at who he might have been. Interestingly, though, his Service Number is in the Block 934900 to 943999 issued from Jun 1940 to English residents in Malta! Might help in unearthing him?!!!! Father might have been a Serviceman? But Walter might have had to get his backside out of Malta fairly quickly. It soon became a fairly unhealthy place to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jblaverick, Hi,
IF 1255157 LAC Gordon Francis EDWARDS was at least 18 when he Enlisted at Uxbridge, Gloucester, or Penarth, fairly soon after May 1940 (Block 1250001 to 1299800), then he was born before 1922. There are 3 G F Edwards’ that I can find that might be him. They are:
EDWARDS Gordon F St. Thomas Devon 1918
EDWARDS Gordon F Salford Lancashire 1920
EDWARDS Gordon F Pontypridd Glamorganshire 1921
If I had to go for any of those it would be the Pontypridd G F Edwards Enlisting at Penarth. But this is just grasping at straws!!!

“Tiny” Mentz was NCO aircrew on Met Sqns in WW2. He was Commissioned (from Flt Sgt) on 8 Feb 45. He was then, variously, RAFVR, RAFRO, RAFR, and CC – as well as being an Air Min/MoD civilian meteorologist. He eventually Relinquished his CC Commission as OC MMU on 27 Aug 83. He was, thus, (I think) the last person to wear the “M” Brevet in uniform, and on duty – at RAF Stanley (doing 24-hr shifts!!!!!).

The Mobile Met Unit couldn’t manage to get a team together to do IAT Greenham 1983 – we were still a bit busy with aftermath of the Falklands Unpleasantness. But we’d done 77, 79, and 81!! They were steep learning curves for everybody – but good fun. They were “flying” an airshow by the seat of one’s pants. I think Tim Prince used to age 10 years at every one!!!

Well, we got Enigma, and they got Communism! Who got the best deal?

Now I’m an agnostic, but if there is actually any sort of “after-life” then Zelhem is where the late, great, W/O Henk Welting, RNAF, used to live. Henk probably did more to further the cause(s) of the “Unaccounted Airmen” from WW2 than most. The ‘recovery’ had better be done properly! There might just be a Dutch Warrant Officer looking down! And, as the whole world knows, Air Force Warrant Officers are a fearsome breed!!

Moggy – re Post #17
Whilst I agree, I do think you may be reducing your hydrostatic potential whilst facing the prevailing wind!

So where does “DON 10” fit into this?. We used to use yards of this (yes, pre decimal), and reckoned that if “it” couldn’t be repaired with Don 10, and a sufficiency of “Chiefy’s Tape”, then “it” was really knackered!! I actually sewed one of My Leader’s buttons back on his Combat Kit with bits of Don 10. Shows you how useful it can be to have had a Tyneside Mother when it came to domestic issues!!!!

I suspect that we only got the Tucano when one of the Black Buck Vulcans lost the probe-tip on the way home from Stanley, AND had some dodgy hardware hung-up underneath. The Brazilians were prepared (as neutrals) to accept this offensive, armed, aircraft, in the interests of humanity. But I would give your back-teeth/right-arms to listen to the recordings of the panic calls from UK MoD to Brazil MoD whilst this problem was “agreed”, or “sorted out”. Fall about material!!
