I am fairly certain that there will be very few votes occasioned by this announcement (and also that for the Arctic Convoys!). Why, then, did the Govt not wait a couple of decades more before making the decision? Then, the costs would have been significantly reduced!!
You can see why I am such a committed Conspiracist! Govts/Councils, etc, NEVER EVER do anything that appears to be for the best without some ulterior motive for themselves.
I should move to Tunbridge Wells!!

    Bob, Hi,
Most of the Uni Archaeology Depts have a number of these gizmos. Talk nicely to them and you might even get given a couple of students to do the “donkey work” for their Dissertations?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not, perhaps, the full Time Team bit, but mutual backscratching!

Try (a) the County Library Service, (b) the University Library, and (c) the Council Archaeologist (who will have knowledge of the local Sites & Monuments Record (SMR – or whatever it’s called these days!)).
If none of the above either can give you advice then you might be in a bit of trouble. But if you don’t ask, you’ll never learn!!

    Charlie,
It is about the removal for ever, or not, of Historic RAF artefacts by those who may, or may not, be qualified to make such decisions – but think they are. This is the problem with pseudo-democracies!

It would seem, therefore, that one should NOT take the Reptiles with one on any tour. But, if they have to be there, then the wisest course of action is not to talk to them. Simple. Just takes a bit of willpower. But all these politicos like to be quoted, and/or be seen, on TV, getting in/out of large limousines. It’s an intellectual failing! MPs (etc) should be like the US President – max of 2 x 4-yr terms and then OUT. Would get rid the professional politicians at a stroke!

VX927 (and others) re Post #13.
I spent more than 40 yrs either in (2 periods), or as a civil servant (and Reserve Officer), in the Operational side of the RAF – so I do know what I’m talking about. Any Air Force is a Defensive/Offensive organisation. It is NOT Air Show fodder, however much the airshow junkies may wish it.
When we could afford it the Arrows were good TV fodder. We can no longer afford it. Do you wish to see this frippary kept in being at the expense of Tac Comms Wg/Tac Supply Wg, and the Spec Forces Support Grp, etc, etc? If you do then you are not thinking straight. Get real. This is difficult stuff. Air Shows do not defend the country!

    Dave (Post #2)
Agree. Fighter Pilots should be about killing (from, and in, the air) the Soveriegn’s Enemies – not farting about in front of TV cameras like divas!
If we have to cut (and I’m not convinced it’s actually necessary) then cut the fripparies – and The Arrers are a frippary!

    Matt,
Not all a/c are equipped with the kit – the ground receivers are not world-wide. Not all have it swtiched on. I’m located at a point at which a/c going to N America are about 10-12k feet out of LHR. Those, with the kit (and switched on!), identify on FR24 very accurately in the ‘x’ and ‘y’. Not so sure about the ‘z’ – but that was always the problem with GPS.
There are sites that can give you an airframe’s history. Anything over 40 yrs would, I submit, be fair game for ‘Historic Aviation’. Audible drooling goes on with mil a/c of lesser age when shufti’d. So the civvies must be fair game?
And at the other end of the scale there are some very ‘odd’ flights by ‘RAF’ a/c with ‘civvy’ call-signs/airframe idents, etc. It all gets a bit blurred from the days when I accumulated hundreds of ties from RAF Baggage Labels on my Bergen!

    TA,
I was thinking that some of the cargo carriers (and, indeed, some pax carriers!!) that carry dodgy freight to dodgy locations may be getting a bit long in the tooth – if not clapped-out. Could be “historic”, but I will abide by the decision(s) of “Them Upstairs” (and their friends The Rockers!).

There’s a rumour that as from 1 Apr 2013 ALL Posts on this Forum will have to be (a) totally accurate, (b) properly and verifiably attributable, and (c) use Betty Battenburg’s English (or, at least, the nearest approximation thereto that can be achieved).

    TA,

On a matter of strict technicality for inclusion in/on this thread can one Post ‘unusual’ instances observed on http://www.flightradar24.com/. Or does one have to shufti the crates with one’s own personal shuftiscopes?

    Lawrence (Post #53), Hi,
I go along with RAF Peterborough (Westwood). I actually got to sit in one of those Tiger Moths as 4 yr-old!! Presume the loc of the Master prang was Priory Road? Born at the other end of it from the prang!!
And Peterborough – Norwich (I think) was the first helicopter Mail transfers! Clattering little things barely making it over the top of Baker Perkins office block!!! (there’s an HMP on the site now!!)

I’ll go along with Pete Verney – except, of course, in the case of tail-draggers when “2 Greens” was the max you could expect?!!
