Branson and others have made their money in life by being shrewd. Why should he give his money away because other people think he has got pots of it? Should we tell friends to give money away because we think they have too much? Maybe the reason that Branson hasn’t invested large sums of his money into it is because he has looked at the potential returns – would it be good publicity to have the ‘Virgin Vulcan ‘ u/s at Farnborough for instance when one of his businesses is an airline !

I agree almost entirely with what youve said David. I certainly dont think that he should give his money away purely because we think he has got pots if it. Branson is far cleverer than to get sucked in by that expectation, and yes I agree that the publicity he could gain from supporting the Virgin Vulcan could be adverse to his business interets.

Yet he is happy to take part in a letter writing excercise that will, I have no doubt prove to be fruitless. I know that, many of the forum readers know that as Im sure he also does. He has however by putting his name to this letter gained free advertising and made himself and no doubt his companies look better for supporting a throughly British underdog of a project whilst at the same time not forking out any money and perhaps more importantly kept a safe distance from the project for when the inevitable happens.

But if he and the other celebs are so passionate about it the asked for amount to avert disaster IS peanuts to them. You cant argue that surely David ? and what would be so wrong about giving the project the money between them and not seeking publicity? If I gave a £100 to a project I dont want to be in the press telling all. But then again Im not a celeb and dont want the adulation of millions or to increase the image of a business I run.

All this is from all of them is self serving publicity.

By the way I will add that I have no problem with Branson and Im not having a go at him personally. In fact what Ive seen of the guy on TV I rather like him and respect highly what he has achieved. I wish I was as shrewd and then maybe I wouldnt be of to work shortly to work till 1am whilst lining other peoples pockets. 😉

And to now give Mr Branson some positive PR he did pay for a seasons insurance for Sally B, so clearly he is a good guy.

Qoutes below taken from the linked BBC article above

“A letter from high-profile supporters, including Sir Richard Branson, appeared in a national newspaper calling for the government to intervene.”

“The open letter, also signed by Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, author Frederick Forsyth”

Are these not people that could easily muster the missing £750.000 between them and not even notice the money missing from their savings.

Sometimes the media/celebs make me so angry. Its like Bob Geldof and Bono saying we are to materialistic and should give more of our savings away whilst they live in the manner their carears allow.

I think in this day and age with the RAF facing the biggest pressures and yet more cut backs its a non starter.

actually, the colour of PS853 is wrong. its not a true PR blue. PM631 is nearer although I think they used Landrover Blue for that 1 because PR blue is hard to come by. the last aircraft to carry PR Blue were the PR9 Canberras

THe colour of PS853 is indeed incorrect. I spoke to the guy who looked after her at East Midlands a few years ago and he said that they had tried hard to find out what colour had been used for her when she was restored without any joy.

The incorrectness of the colour is more obvious when you see the original blue which is visible in certain areas when various panels etc are removed.

Despite the wrong colour she still looks rather nice though dont she?

    Ben,

How about this as a basis for whatever size Vulcan you eventually build, and its based on the windtunnel drawings.

Ive seen made models of this and it is realistic.

As the link states they used to make a kit of the model many years ago. I have a review of it somewhere if you want a copy.

Is 26ET not a Night Fighter Meteor Sec. Ref. code?

Yes 26ET is NF or TT Meteor and that ties up with what I was told they were when I was given them.

They do however look near identical to some of the pedals seen in ref pics Ive got of T7’s albeit ones with poor image quality.

Other ref material shows pedals like shown in pics 3 & 4.

Same pedal with a diff number dependant on which part of the Meteor family it was intended to go into stores for?

It’s one of those stories which was actually true. A big lump of the tail section, including the base of the turret was pulled out in the mid nineties and went up towards the midlands somewhere. I’ve got a couple of photos of the remains in situ which I’ll dig out. There is still quite a lot of wing structure and undercarriage left behind. Don’t know the serial off hand.

Wellington Aviation Gallery, Moreton in Marsh?
