    HURRICANES

And here are some for Hurrifan, as I’m I…. 😀 The two 6 Sqn Kites were my third attempt at a profile after a BE2A and a Phantom FGR 2, hence not as good as my Coltishall Aircraft (and I didn’t do pilots back in those days). More to come. 😉

That’s interesting, thanks for that. I’ll have to see if I can find out some more – I’ll keep you posted.

    Dean.

Cheers Dean, I’m interested in 21 ADM Wing HQ with its T82 Radar and Bloodhound 1 Tactical Control Center that was located on the other side of the Hatfield Woodhouse – Bawtery road from the airfield.

Go and post the question over on tank net and I think they will say that it is very good but nothing is invulnerable now. I might be wrong here, but last time I looked the only tank that so far had destroyed a Challenger 2 was another one. Doesn’t the M1A1 use the same armour or something derived from it, and there have been a few of them lost, though I am not sure how many, if any, were penetrations.

The Challenger 2 killed in GWII was in a hull down position with two crew outside the tank on the Turret. It was killed by a two HESH rounds from another Challenger 2 that hit the turret. The two guys outside the tank were killed and the two inside were wounded by the blast and fireball going though the open hatches. (I’ve seen one of the Survivors in 2003 while at the Op Telic Memorial service at St Paul’s and his wounds were quite horrific). One account I’ve seen says the turret was blown off, I don’t known if that was the result of fire in the tank getting to the charge bags after going though the hatchs and after the two guys in the tank had bailed out, had they been in the tank when the turret went, I would have said the whole crew would have died.

Might be interesting to note that one of it’s engines was removed and used to power Donald Campbell’s Bluebird. Read that off the sign at Solent Sky.

    John

I knew Bluebird K7 used a Beryl, though not one that had been fitted to the SRA.1. Campbell got two engines for the boat when it was built in the early 1950s and set a number of records with it from 1955 to 1964, after which she was fitted with an Orpheus from a Gant. Campbell got a complete Gnat, plus an engine from the Air Ministry and parts of the aircraft, including the tail fin were fitted to the boat. It was in this configuration that she crashed in Jan 67, killing Campbell.

I do remember seeing on the HM Prison Service web site a few years ago that the prison at Lindholme had a small museum which covered the history of the Airfield. Cannot find any reference to it now however.

Well I never knew that, So how come the bucc is becoming on the CAA?and just wondering what other RAF aircraft could become on the CAA?

    Regards
    James

Because the Buccaneer is capable of being maintained and flown by a private organisation in the eyes of the CAA and BAe. I’d put money on the Hawk Mk 1 being operated as a private jet warbird one day (it is fitted with a RAT). The Jaguar? I don’t know the status of that one, I would say its possible. The Tornado, no way, the aircraft is not called the electric pig for nothing.

must have missed something…where did i make such a grave error?

SUFLANKER45, Yes I’m a big Hurricane fan. but my username is not Hurrifan. I made the comments about the UK and French cockups in 1918. As for the UN, well they did push for the State of Israel (Truman was US President at the time) after WWII (Caused the British no end of problems, Arabs shooting at our guys by day and the Jews bombing us by night). Carter’s fault? that he hosted Sadat and Begin Camp David talks (Sadat had already gone to Israel before hand). Clinton, well we all know he was a draft dodger and hid in the UK. However that was just because he didn’t have friends that could get him into the cockpit of an ANG F-106. Of course his make love not war attitude in the Oval Office, didn’t allow him any scope to do anything post 1998 (WAG THE DOG anybody?).
