    Quote from Reuters site…

WASHINGTON, July 7 (Reuters) – The stealthy F-35 Joint Strike Fighter being developed by the United States and eight other countries is to be named the “Lightning II,” in homage to two earlier fighters.

Doesn’t that make it the Lightning III?

No as the earlier aircraft were both called just the Lightning (Early F-22 unoffical name does not count).

Lightning is what Lockheed want to call it then Lightning it should be. (The name fits into the British weather naming for fighters as well).

“the US stands for the pursuit of peace, freedom and democracy worldwide” – :diablo:

How long before the workings of all that lot ends up in the hands of China and other countries unfriendly to the US?

    No you weren’t.

At that time life in the RAF wasn’t what it seems through the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia and history. The ethos that is now generally held to have prevailed – at times by myself as well – was not in evidence in those days. Flying or maintaining the various aircraft types we had back then was tough. Not a macho ‘tough’ but an energy sapping, unrecognised, un-remarked and back-breaking ‘tough’. Out on an airfield at 04:30 with the driving snow coming at you horizontally, ice everywhere and you’re trying to get some recalcitrant bit of kit or system to work properly and your fingers, hands and whole body is freezing and numb . . . I would guess that just about any ex-RAF bloke you ask about those time in the 60s will tell you much the same thing and relate stories of privations that would curl your toes. As with the blokes in WWII, the whole thing only becomes ‘great’ long after it is over and nostalgia sets in.

No, be thankful that you live in a time when the ‘overall’ effect is now considered ‘romantic’.

    😎

yep, and the living conditions for your average airman back then were most likely just as bad, they were just starting to improve when I joined up.

Franc, What sferrin means is that the B-52H was called the B-52H because it was designed to be fitted with the TF33 when they were built (as well as other changes like the fitting of the 20mm Vulcan at the back), had those airframes had been fitted with J57 they would have almost been B-52G’s (with the exception of the rear airframe modifications for the cannon and some new avionics). You will most likely find that major modifications would have been required (on the engine plyons at least) to replace the J57s on the G models with TF33 which costs. Hence it was never done.

they were issued pick-axe handles for airfield defence

It was still the same in the mid 198O, There was a number of times my weapon on an exercise was a pick-axe handle with CPX SLR written on it.

what about buying some ex-USAF KC-135s off the yanks.. take away the boom and replace that with a 3 point hose n drogue. i think there are countless examples in the US boneyards.. or even better BRING BACK THE VICTOR…. 🙂 🙂 🙂

All modern jet tankers on the market are better than a Victor or KC-135 in all respects that count.

Interesting detail, what Adour was fitted?!

Bog standard RAF Hawk T1A (low thrust engine), however I don’t think the higher spec engines has the power to do it even if its more powerful. The extra bits most likely give too much drag.

Your average blue-stater would run up and give Osama a hug and then call Bush incompetant when they got beheaded. Your average red-stater would like to clean out Gitmo- by lining them all up and putting bullets in their heads or better yet sawing off a bunch of heads and sending the video to Al Jazeera. Obviously I’m exaggerating but that’s pretty much the way the wind blows these days. On top of that many Americans are disgusted by the fact that your average Middle Easterner doesn’t seem to be all that concerned about doing anything about the terrorism problem. And to those people who think Americans are a bunch of arrogant busybodies you haven’t seen anthing yet. Wait ’til some terrorist sets off an Iranian nuke in the US and we stop playing nice.

US stopped playing nice on 07 Oct 2001 😉
