I’m not sure how many good TriStar 500 airframes are available and the youngest ones around would be 23 years or so old. Much though I like the type, I wonder how good an investment it would be to acquire and convert such relatively old aircraft. The RAF’s ex-civil VC10s, when taken out of airline service, were around 15 years old – or less, depending on the origin of the particular machine concerned, e.g. the former EAA ones, whhich had only flown for 10 years or so.
I do believe the RAF and BAe found the ex african VC-10s had some serious corrosion problems however.
Depends on the dive-angle and height to start from.
Just to remember. The wing-profile of the Hawk allows supersonic speeds similar to Sea Harrier, when the Alpha-Jet has not like a MiG-15 f.e. In the last two examples more powerfull engines will not bring supersonic capabilities at all, when an Adour with AB may be enough for the Hawk. Fuel fraction in mind and related sfc brings back that idea to reality.
It does not depend on either, as I actually tried it on Valley’s Hawk Simulator back in 1993 (Max height and speed that the aircraft could get to, very steep dive, aircraft got to about .98 and would not go any faster, it also started to slow down as I got into denser air). The bloke who was driving the main Simulator control station told me the aircraft could not do it with the gun pod and pylons fitted and he was not wrong. I had the fact confirmed to me when I actually got a flight in the real thing later in that year. Yes a Hawk will do 1.2 in a dive, but only when it is totally clean.
Was that the church with the Zep airframe bits in it that Dan Cruickshank visited in the last episode of that Invasion series he did a few years back.
All Hawks are allowed up to Mach 1,2 in a dive.
Unless you hang a gun pod and a couple of weapon pylons on it, then Mach 1 is in your dreams. :diablo: :diablo: :diablo:
π VC10 and Tristar – Heaven π or Hell :diablo: – Dependant on which side of the baggage ticket has BZN on it. π
BIGVERN1966 – How come, if you didn’t watch it, you knew the dog’s name was London????? π
I watched the Littlest Hobo when i grew up – not avidly but often enough.
Thinking of TV dogs – anyone else see the news that Moose died aged 16? (Moose played Eddie in Frasier and appeared in over 190 episodes apparently)
I did watch a complete episode once, and I do mean only once and the only thing I remember about it was the words STARING LONDON with the dog walking down a street on the opering titles.

Well its nice to have a security clearance as you get to read some interesting stuff years before anybody who has not got one, (unless some spy has got his hands on it or you boss goes and loses it). However the down side is you can not tell the rest of the world.
Ofcourse your biased source didnt tell you all this.
No we where swapping maintenance and operator stories about a US built SA-3 Goa simulator (His kit) and a Real SA-8 Gecko (My kit) π in a bar at the time. π Oh and by the way I meant dodgy and not a kids name for a dog π
Heathens, the bloody pair of you! :p
No, there was lots of quality Kids TV on when I was an nipper π , then the BBC started showing this pish!!!! π‘

another issue that should be addressed concerning ‘radar visibility’ is the radar’s wavelength. Where much of the ‘stealth’ technology that we love and embrace is designed to counter ‘modern’ radar systems, I do recall some mention in the early 90s that the F-117 could be easily detected with the old, dare I say ancient’ Soviet long-range air-defence systems which function at a far lower wavelength the the ‘modern’ AD or AA systems. (and I’m not even going to touch the subject of ‘slippery/visible when wet’)
Yes you can track the F-117 with you long wave radar. What you can not do is fit the aerial system required to give the angular resolution required to track that F-117 in a aircraft smaller than a AWACS or in a missile. Long Wave radars are also a lot easier to jam. Even with the Low Frequency Radar on the ground you have a wide return on the scope instead of a small bilp.
in Korean war soviet PO-2 (which was made mainly from wood) was very rarely seen by radars.
They could be tracked by radar, however the problem was that the night fighters that were fighting them were jet powered, in the form of Starfires and Skyknights or high performance piston jobs like the F-82, and they had big problems in reducing speed to that required to ID and engage the PO-2s (which were known as Bed Check Charlieβs). One Starfire successfully shot down a PO-2, only to the stall and crash thanks to the recoil of its weapons when they were fired.
HATED IT!!!!!!!! The Dog’s real name was London if I remember (most likely more than one Dog in the series however), Did not see much more than the start titles as the TV got switched to another Channel immediately.
