    Note also the enlarged trim tab. The first Typhoon prototype had too small a rudder, which was remedied on the second prototype. Could it have been this aircraft?

    The use of woolen tufts would require a photo plane to fly alongside at the same speed. The A&AEE had an Hampden for this task, but I cannot imagine that this would be flying alongside in a high speed dive…

    The carbon monoxyde problems occurred soon after the first production aircraft were put in service by the end of 1941. The cause of the tail vibrations was found in August 1942 after the crash of test pilot Seth-Smith (Wikipedia). If only the CO problem was investigated, that would place the tests in early 1942 (> old style markings). If both problems were investigated at the same time the tests could have been at any time in 1942.

    If it were only the CO problem, why weren’t the tufts extended till the cockpit area?
