Retire all the MiG-21 senior leader pilots in the AF that don’t conform ( kinda like how the F-16 took over power in USAF leadership thinking. 😮 Once some F-16 pilots made Flag rank in USAF, it was all over for the other airframes in the planning meetings ) 😀
You misunderstand. Its not the IAF but the Govt of India you have to convince..
Given Mirage 2000’s which IAF pilot would refuse the same? 😉
How they are protecting it? The engine is the only critical thing left.
Can you say the above with 100% confidence? I think not.
They can supply jigs but unless they supply design data China will have to attempt to reverse engineer, which will be a hard task.
There are many ways to protect IPRs in avionics and structural units and the Russians are past masters at the game- ask India. Apart from these, the russians can also use contractual agreements to make sure China does not rev engineer certain components. Its all part of the technology game.
All very true, but try selling your idea to the politicos even while pointing out the life cycle cost advantage. It simply wont work.
The problem is Singapore has a lack of space for training. Any coop with India will be to their advantage. They know that and if they provide $$ who’s complaining?
A possible HUD installed in J-10? Or in J8II?
Seems to be a prototype.
Whilst the PAF ACM compliments China on its development attempts in avionics, he also notes that Chinese systems are not quite mature yet hence PAF would like to rely on western systems. (Recent AFM)
I think the PRC has a goal to make a Flanker out of 100% Chinese parts, and there is gradual sinicization of the J-11 batch by batch. Airframe is no problem; FBW they will probably have to reprogram the same basic system used in the J-10 or FC-1; glass cockpit no problem; HUD they have their own; HMS they already have their own designs; engine with WS-10A of course; radar one from NRIET or LETRI, etc,. That leaves you with the remaining stuff like the OEPS.
This is provided Russia lets them. Once burnt twice shy.
After the MiG21 story I bet the Russians are working overtime to protect their IPR’s anyhow, somehow.
Made in China
Looks like an OEPS for the Su27 to me, pretty much identical..
I agree… The MKI is the example that showed how to deal with hightech avionics and superb planes. IAF made superb decission. The only thing we may argue about is the TVC but for the rest it is admirable.
The TVC is one of the critical factors which makes the plane so formidable.
same old same old “only US/japan can do it theory”. when confronted with evidence to the contrary people get into denial mode.
Let it be.
As is said, “Satyemeva Jayate”- truth alone triumphs.
Elp,
Like someone once told me force multipliers multiply force but they cant substitute for raw force itself- I guess what I am trying to say here is that any conflict with both PAF and PLAAF will be a target rich environment- we will need large numbers of a/c even with high sortie rates and low downtime.
Also, apart from the numbers issue- its the Q of costs even if upfront costs for a/c replacement. These MiG21’s were purchased at Rs 1 Crore each (1 Crore= 100 Lakhs= 10 Million Rs= approx 500,000 $ at 50Rs=1$), each Mirage 2000 cost Rs 140 Crores.
Thats 140 times just for the per unit costs.
So the qn the IAF faced was “hey isnt this too expensive or what”?
Now of course we do have money but replacing a/c on a one to one basis is an uphill climb.
And an IAF survey found that present combat strength of 39.5 combat sq is itself too less and we need approx 55-60 for optimum effect.
The biggest con is price.
Sanctions for French equipment are pretty rare.
The only examples I can think of- off the top of my head, are the ones imposed on israel post the six day war and the temporary one on the PAF – when Mirage deliveries were delayed thx to the Kargil conflict. IIRC Argentina also suffered an embargo post the Falklands conflict- though I am not quite sure.
Of course if we really want to go into deep cons- buying from any nation has its attendant risks. The technology can be compromised- anyone remember what happened to the Iraqi AD n/w set up with French help…
The stuff built by countries like China and India were just very crude prototypes built only for testing new technologies, this is not something that can actually be used in a plane.
I cannot speak for China but as far as India is concerned, your words are pretty much inaccurate. The AESA radar demonstrated by DRDO is scaleable and will see first light on the CABS developed AEWAC’s based on commercial bizjets. The IAF and the Indian Govt have already given the green light for the same. The AEWACS will require substantial SIGINT capability as well and DRDO already has several packages ready- which they’ve developed and already supplied to the IAF/IN.
Hi ELP,
Its nice seeing your comments and hard to disagree with any of them.
Re: India not replacing its “super buffaloes” (barf, barf …bison sounds so much better), its all about the money. Approx half the Indian fleet is made up of MiG21’s – we cant replace them all at one go. The planned Mirage acqusition is intended to bolster up the fleet and let the old MiG variants, as you say, retire with dignity.
RDY2 and RBE2
Hey Guys,
Can anyone post the specs of the RBE2 and RDY2 from the latest AFM? This for those who want the gist of the article.
Thanks!
