Just how capable is the local Turkish arms industry? Frankly, I’m rather sceptical about their being able to locally upgrade their Phantoms to the 2020 configuration.
Seems to be a lot of talk of indigenization within the Turkish arms circles as of late; talk of building their own MBTs as well, or in cooperation with the Pakistanis using their Al-K.
Dont underestimate the Turks. 😉
They have had access to some pretty decent technology via their production and license programs with the US. Some of their companies are pretty ok too.
Aselsan comes to mind as one which deals with electronics.
They may take what the Pakistanis offer- another way of accessing what the Chinese/ Ukrainians have developed, and upgrade the same inhouse. That way they get cheap platforms which they can modify.
Similarly, in two seaters like the Tornado, ne’er fly with the bloke in the back unless war beckons? 😉
I mean, gimme a break guys- for training purposes surely they can come up with an economy mode on the engines, the series 3 RD33’s for India are to have them. For non DACT runs you could use the above..
WOW
Impressed would be an understatement.
😀 😀 😀
Actually, they should remove one wing and one engine. The landing gear should be halved too. The pilots should get into the a/c buck naked. Will save on uniform costs.
Lord Puddlemoore the Third argueing for the same in Her Majesty’s House of Lords-
“Preposterous I say, these fighter boys, flying about wasting all that much quid, what what?”
Well, considering the Hawks in the RAF are almost 30 years old now, and have already gone through both wing and fuselage changes, it’s not surprising the Hawks India is going to get are far more capable.
Its just the manufacturer pushing his wares. Anyway, when the IAF purchased their jags – they too were better than the std Armee d’ la Air and RAF jags at that time- higher thrust engines and state of the art DARIN.
So no big deal.
Does’nt really matter which source you’ve used because at the end of the day, none relay nor confirm what you claim.
Exactly. I am still waiting for the various reports of PA’s comms etc. What I did get were non functioning links.
I think this is also headed the F7PG’s have substantial BVR ability way. That too was usually tom tommed by PAF Fan….
Where exactly was it proved that he was lazy, or is this just a propagated rumor?
I suggest you look up Rahul Bedi’s antecedents. Dunno what an avowed leftist and an “enemy of the capitalist money making arms industry” is doing as a journo. Pays his bills I guess.
Pakistan’s nuclear assets are guarded by air capping done by F-16s but due to non-availability of spares Pakistan had to cut down flying hours of its F-16s.
Interesting.

‘AJTs chosen by India superior to those with Britain’
NEW DELHI, OCT 10 (PTI)British Aerospace today said the Hawk Advanced jet trainers selected by India had greater performance and capability than the aircraft in service with the Royal Air Force (RAF).
Stating this, the leader of the RAF ace aerobatic team ‘Red Arrows’ Spike Jepson said the aircraft to be delivered to India had 30 per cent more range and 25 per cent more engine thrust.
The RAF team wil participate with their Indian counterparts IAF’s Surya Kiran aerobatic team over Hindon airbase on Monday.
The air show would mark the revival of fighter activity at the airbase after a gap of seven years.
All nine RAF display pilots are operational fast jet pilots from frontline squadrons of the British force who are being supported for their air show in India by a team of 40 other personnel.
Jepson said the Red Arrows would perform a number of new manouevres at the display including the spectacular ‘Fountain Split’.
RAF Commander-in-Chief Air Marshal Joe French is accompanying the team to promote bilateral ties

HAL, Snecma JV to make aircraft engine components in India
BANGALORE, JUN 17 (PTI)
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, the public-sector defence undertaking, is in talks with Snecma Aerospace, a French aero-engine maker to set up a production unit in Bangalore for civil aircraft engine components.“We will first start machining for engine blades in large volumes… They will bring the forgings, we will machine it,” HAL Chairman N R Mohanty told reporters here today.
The joint venture firm, for which investment plans have not been finalised, may initially hire factory space in Bangalore and later expand its operations, he said.
“We are going to finalise at the Farnborough air show (in Paris) next month,” Mohanty said, adding the investment would be shared equally between the two companies.
Besides Snecma, the European helicopter major Eurocopter and Israeli avionics firm Elbit have expressed interest in setting up joint ventures with HAL.
“All the joint ventures will have us on their board, but will have an independent management structure. HAL will not interfere in the day-to-day affairs of the JV,” Mohanty said, adding that HAL had been in talks with the three firms with a view to finalising the ventures.
Eurocopter is interested in outsourcing helicopter sub- assemblies and structural parts from India and Elbit is looking at jointly developing avionics for both the Indian and global market.
Mohanty said HAL would involve private firms in building Saras aircraft for the civilian market and was a keen participant in developing the multi-role civilian aircraft.

HAL to invest Rs 3,250 crore in units to build Su-30MKI
BANGALORE, OCT 22 (PTI)
Public sector defence undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd will invest Rs 3,250 crore over the next three years in equipment and capacity augmentation for building the multi-role supersonic Sukhoi30-MKI fighter in the country.“We are spending about USD 150 million (Rs 750 crore) in capital investment at our Nasik plant and in addition to that about USD 500 million (Rs 2,500 crore) for non-standard equipment and tooling,” HAL Chairman N R Mohanty told reporters here today.
He said HAL would add a facility at Khoraput for manufacturing Sukhoi’s AL31FP thrust vectoring engine, besides one for overhauling the aircraft.
Mohanty said HAL would expand its units in Lucknow, Hyderabad, Nasik and Korua in Uttar Pradesh.
Asserting that the Sukhoi30-MKI indigenous production was going on schedule, he said the first fighter would be rolled out during the first quarter of 2004.
On the acquisition of the Hawk Advance Jet Trainers from British Aerospace, Mohanty said details of technical transfer were being worked out to produce 42 trainers at HAL Bangalore.
He said 24 aircraft would be built in UK and a final agreement would be signed soon.

“India has edge over China in military aircraft manufacture”
BANGALORE, JULY 28 (PTI)
India has technological and manufacturing edge over rival China in the area of military aircraft, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd Chairman N R Mohanty said today.“India is ahead in technology capabilities over China particularly in the area of military aircraft, in civil aviation, they are more stronger,” Mohanty said here tonight interacting with students at a meet organised by the Bangalore Science Forum.
He said the country integrates 100 per cent of an aircraft, adding, that “though Russians have given India, the thrust vector engine technology with the Sukhoi30-MKI, they have not given to China for its Su-27 aircraft.” Asserting that HAL was emerging as a global player, Mohanty said, it was finalising joint ventures with French aero engine major Snecma and European helicopter maker Eurocopter, besides Israel’s avionics firm Elbit systems.
India, he said, had been invited as a risk sharing partner with a Russian-led consortium to build a series of passenger jets, aimed at the growing civil market.
Mohanty said HAL would hand over the first locally produce Su30-MKI fighter to the Indian Air Force before the end of this fiscal.
He said HAL was awaiting the Government nod for the Light Combat Helicopter and would take about 25 months for flying a prototype from the date of getting the sanction.
I hope he will use that money in a very wisefully.
I’m fed up to see that m*r*n to use the french military budget like his wallet.
Amen.
Sameer
I must say that from a western point of view, several countries seems to have a very ambitious program of purchases, specially India and China.
Few countries share the threat perception India has. We have a perennially hostile neighbour to the west and another to the North east which is a declared ally of the former. Given the above- India has to do what it has to.
Even so, as a percentage of the GDP, India’s defence expenditure is still nothing remarkable. The emphasis remains on economic development.
if one were to use editorials to point towards the failures of the Rafales, EF-2000s, F-22s lol
How much delays for each program ?
8 years for the Rafale.
How much exactly for the others ?
Per the IAF and ADA the LCA has been delayed by some 6 years.
