If your Spitfire is merely a battered dataplate with various spares mixed with new-build parts engined with a Merlin originally fitted to a York (or something) does that make it fine because it sounds right? How many of the pilots ‘sound right’? Too many of them have dashed colonial accents for a start!
I think you might find it difficult to equipe your Vimy replica with an original engine, or at least an original which would have satisfied the insurance for the flights it did. And how many replicas would be worthy of the epitaph when they actually had all their quirks ironed out in the design stage? Can think of none at the moment but the Bee Gee racers were rather unstable as I recall, was that resolved for that replica to fly?
