I believe it’s rebuilt from the wreck that was on display for some years in the armoury museum. Here’s a photo of its recovery: credit Spitfire survivors Facebook

Here’s a pic I found on google images of a 131squadron Spit with an odd fin flash and Fuselage roundel. Probably the Americans trying to distinguish themselves from other RAF squadrons?

Precursor to the later Star markings?

Thanks for the replies chaps, all seem plausible explanations.

Here’s another picture showing them on both sides. Again a Vc in the BR serial range on Malta.

Thanks for the replies chaps, big help. I’m intending to model the aircraft above which I found in this very forum.

I’m Half way through it as we speak, I saw a funny piece on a Canadian news channel where someone had proposed reinstating the arrow as an F35 alternative!

What sort of differences do you think a production Arrow would have had over the prototype? Bigger radome? Wing hard points? I keep imaging it in RAF markings

Yes the horizontal tailplane antennae, the aircraft I’m building (GN-H 249 Sqn) doesn’t have the post on top of the rudder so can’t see it having the wire from there to behind the cockpit, the lack of the IFF aerial makes sense as I suppose they didn’t want to risk it falling Into enemy hands.

    Thanks.

Cheers for the replies, all those look to be in the same markings I saw, but the Dk sea grey was faded so I’m guessing it was a gate guardian or had been out side.

Didn’t know the Finnish/Swedish Gladiators had those armoured seats! An area the gladiator was deficient in.

    Thanks for the responses chaps.

The pic with the two blade props may be before hostilities kicked off as I’ve read they had been operating the Gladiators for a while before war was declared and also a few were loaded back onto HMS eagle and used by keighly-Peach. A few of the eagle fighter flight had watts propellers.

Big fan of the Gladiator, I hope the Maltese government lets the Malta Aviation museum add some wings!

I cannot help with your specific question other than I think the 3 bladed prop was a Hamilton Standard unit as used on the Blenheim. I have always wondered whether these were fixed when used on a Gladiator or still variable as they were on the Blenheim, if they were variable did it give an improved performance.

    Richard

Yeah i believe they only used the prop, not the Blenheim Mercury engine as is usually quoted as i dont belive it would give any advantage over the Gladiators, (surely it would be geared differently?) But would the controls be inplace for the variable pitch mechanism?
