That Pembroke is a beauty! Does anyone know anything about the Sea Prince that was being restored to flying condition (in Wales I think?) … not heard anything about that in a long time

Well it looks as if the prevailing view is that the German Navy’s Starfighters did indeed sound the same then, but I’ll keep looking to see if I can find any evidence. I can’t imagine where the story came from regarding them sounding rather different – as far as I know they were identical to the Luftwaffe machines, therefore I see no reason for any difference. But I guess stranger things have happened!

With Youtube videos in mind, the one below is well worth a look. It explains graphically where the Starfighter’s howl came from. The reason why some J-79s didn’t howl simply seems to be a symptom of a later (longer) nozzle design. This was supposedly why the F-104S didn’t make the same noises, but I’m not sure where the rumour of the German Navy’s aircraft being slightly different came from – they were essentially the same as the Luftwaffe’s. Anyway, do have a look at this video –

Prompts me to ask – what warbirds can the public buy flights in, within the UK at present? I can think of the various types in the CAF fleet but what else is there at present?

Quite literally rockets in this case – what a catch 🙂

Now, now, let’s bury that old myth about the Starfighter’s safety record. It’s time it was put to rest! 🙂

Different engine nozzles – that’s where the sound came from.

Sabrejet you’re right, the Yeovilton machine was German Navy. Wish I had some Starfighter bits 🙂

I’m really looking forward to seeing the Tornado back in running condition. It was always a joy to see the machine make one of its all too rare appearances, and it’s a great pleasure to know it has been saved for preservation. My only disappointment is that the A&AEE Phantom XT597 didn’t follow the same path. Sadly, it is still languishing outdoors with Everett. The VAAC Harrier managed to make its way to Cosford (which is great news) but the poor Phantom (arguably the most significant of these three test airframes) seems to have been overlooked. Cosford declined to comment on the subject when I asked them, and the Tornado guys at Bruntingthorpe say that (quite understandably) they have enough to do restoring the Tornado, without taking-on a Phantom. I guess we can still hope that the Phantom will be purchased but I guess it’s unlikely, not least because it’s been up for sale for so long already. I’d also be interested to know if there is any news on the Shackleton that went to Bruntingthorpe from Gatwick?

It seems like a very odd question. I don’t quite see how issues connected with politics and morality have much to do with an aeroplane that was simply used to carry-out a particular mission. It is what it is. If we’re going to start examining the morality issues connected to every weapon of war…

Canopener, I don’t need any lectures on the subject, thanks very much. I’m perfectly aware of all the points you mention. As is so often the case with (some) forum users, you don’t seem to have actually read what has been written. I’m not quite sure what Jamie Hunter has to do with any of this either, and I don’t know what this “slagging off ship jockeys” means either… nor do I want to know. It all sounds like childish gossip. Back to the subject perhaps?

    But slightly drifting a little…

True, but it’s an interesting subject. At least the “Spitphoon” illustrates a willingness to depart from the tedious grey/low-viz markings in a pretty drastic way, albeit on just one aircraft. But as I said before, perhaps it will help to develop a less rigid attitude towards colour schemes and markings in general. Not that I’m holding my breath 😉

Soggy, I wouldn’t invest too much attention in David’s comments. He simply likes to contradict or criticise whenever I post anything. As for MOSI, I don’t know what their position is. They have asked me to raise my concerns with them though, so if I find the time over the next few days, I will talk to them, and if there is any news I will obviously pass it back to the forum 🙂
