Deregulation and privatisation is what its called, there must be a lot of different bus companies covering the same area, you’ll find that they frequently update their timetables and review their fares in order to compete with rival companies for what passengers are left standing, straight away that puts pressure on the drivers to get to the next stop before any other bus. Unfortunately its a very “cowboy” way to run a transport company, something that , thank God, doesnt happen in London.
The order of the day down here is to sit behind the bus in front and let him do all the work, much safer.lol
the jibe about anoraks was taken in the spirit in which it was meant.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-12-02 AT 05:50 PM (GMT)]oooooh!!!!Kev! that was below the belt(the bit about anoraks)
so thats what you think of bus drivers is it ? I dunno about your part of the world but down here there is a code of practice, London Transport garages(or TFL as its now called) although not as regimental as they used to be, expect their drivers to behave correctly on the road.We can be sued for negligence as easy as the next person , more so in fact. Yes, even driving thru puddles and soaking people carrys a discipline with it (providing the innocent party complains)
And as for pulling away when someone is running for the bus! once the bus is moving I’m checking my mirrors and the road ahead, not looking at the pavement for runners, its dangerous to stop a bus suddenly once youve pulled away from the kerb. Besides my last action before pulling away is to check nearside mirrors for anyone who might be running. Unfortunately we dont always see them
And driving thru’ puddles deliberately? when its raining its sometimes difficult to see a puddle, and when we do its normally to late to avoid it, not a good idea to swerve suddenly in a 11 ton bus
And as for slamming the brakes on when theres people waiting to get off,is stupid and dangerous. There was an incident involving one of our drivers a few weeks ago, where some kids kept ringing the bell for fun, yea I know its annoying but there was no excuse for his actions, he slammed the brakes on which resulted in six people being taken to hospital, two of them were detained for a few days and the driver himself being sacked for gross misconduct.
Driving a bus in London may not an easy job, but its a responsible one,and sometimes very stressful, but once I finish work I dont wanna discuss it over a pint.
