RE: Crossing the Atlantic Ocean with two engines

Getting A320`s across the atlantic is no problem as you can see from the following extract from the Airbus web sites.

“The A319, A320 and A321 have been developed to have a range of 3000 nm/5600km in the single-aisle market, range to offer true transcontinental non-stop capability, whether routes are primarily business travel or leisure and holiday travel.”

A320`s can actually travel just under 4000 nautical miles with no payload and the maximum fuel load on board.
So crossings can be made non stop on delivery flights.
I feel sorry for the poor pilots bringing light aircraft from one side of the atlantic to the other they really have a naff job

The attacks included B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers as well as ships and submarines in the region. The B-2s flew roundtrip from their base at Whitman Air Force Base in Missouri
The United States and Great Britain launched 50 cruise missiles against terrorist targets inside Afghanistan in an attack that also involved the most sophisticated U.S. warplanes, Pentagon officials said Sunday

    Weaponry used in attacks
    15 bombers
    25 strike aircraft
    50 Tomahawk cruise missiles

    RE: Indian Hijack Confusion!

The original news report said that someone had telephoned saying that the plane had been taken over by hijackers.According to the news today it seems that everybody has a different story. One story says passangers say that the captain told them that they were having a hijack drill. Another says that the captain thought there was a hijack so he locked the cockpit door and assumed that the hijackers were in the passanger section. Another says that the passangers and cabin crew thought that the hijackers had locked themselves in the cockpit.
If the authorities had set up a hijack drill it seem to me that they picked a really bad time to do it as everybody is still so nervous after the 11th September

RE: LHR faces over night flight ban

Listen some of us have no problem falling a sleep at the aviation park right next to runway 1 at Manchester.

But seriously how would this affect deleyed flights will they have to go somewhere else and if you take the worst case senario will airlines have to start thinking that if flights might not make the deadline then it will be cancelled.

And what about the rights of passengers find themselves in Paris because a delayed flight cannot land at Heathrow will these interferring so and so`s be willing to compensate them.

It would be interesting to know how long these people have lived in the area because the law used to be
If something was in the area (say a smelly or noisey factory etc providing they were doing nothing illegal) before you moved in then you could not complain against it because you knew it was there before you move

Where I live we are often over flown by the South Yorkshire police helecopter which comes over very very low on its way to jobs at all times of the day and night if I do wake up it is for only a few seconds by the time you think what was that I am back asleep.

No doubt these objecters have well paid jobs and lots of money and nothing better to do than try to lose the jobs of less well of people.

I mean they could always move

Something else I have just thought of will people who work shifts and have to sleep during the day get the same rights and stop day time flights as well.

    RE: Overreaction regarding safety measures?

I can understand the current paranoia about hand luggage. But any terrorist who is going to hijack a plane can quite easily hide some kind of weapon on his pearson which only a very good body search by an expert could find. If they were really stuck for something to use all they have to do is have a bottle of wine which alot of airlines supply you with free of charge with you meal and they have in there hands a perfectly good weapon to threaten people with.

Regarding pilots being armed I put this to you. (Which I herd someone say on the radio today)

You are a pilot (with a gun) and during the flight the intercom from the cabin section go off. You answer it and a member of your cabin crew says to you that someone is holding something to their throat and is going to kill them unless you open the cockpit door and throw out all the guns.

    WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

HAND OVER YOU GUNS OR LET ONE OF YOU CREW BE KILLED?

    RE: Airlines on the edge

I am sorry to say that I think you are right. Most airlines are in some kind of financial trouble so as you point out this is a good time for them to cut costs by giving lots of people the push and dropping unprofitable routes. They then can put the blame on “these uncertain times”.
Will Boeing move the B717 production line to Seattle to save themselves even more money or will either Boeing or Airbus open factories in places like China where wages will be just a fraction of the western workers.

LAST EDITED ON 03-09-01 AT 09:13 PM (GMT)[p]If you want to see what a good quality webcam view should be like try
    http://live6.truelook.com/face/newface.jsp?name=/adler/skyeye&width=640…

It is not strickly speaking an airport webcam but if you look at the bottom picture (marked at the bottom left viewfinder from X time ago) Meigs Field in Chicago is at the left hand side next to the beech. In the drop down menu at the top right click on Meigs Field which will take you to a view of the airport then by pressing you left mouse button and at the same time dragging your mouse to draw a square over anything you want to look at in either picture or you can zoom in and out with the slider at the side you can get a close up of any thing interesting going on at either the airport or on the beech.
It is only a still picture but if you see something interesting if you keep pressing the refresh button on you toolbar or drawing squares you will be able to follow the action.

RE: Up and coming regional airports

LAST EDITED ON 22-07-01 AT 10:09 PM (GMT)[p] There would have to be major construction work done to extend the runway at Sheffield as the runway would either have to be built on a platform at the east end or the airport link road would need a major reroute, even then landing aircraft would only just miss the main road into Sheffield from the M1. At the west end there is probebly even less room before the runway would meet the nearest road.

The best hope they have for increasing the number of flights is if the ex RAF base at Finningley is not turned into an airport because most airlines would prefer to go as there with it longer runway so they could use larger aircaft if passanger numbers increase as Sheffild is limited to aircraft up to BAE`s 146 size.

The public enquiry starts on 25 September into the building of the airport at Finningley lets hope it is quicker than Heathrows terminal 5 as realy need a good airport in this area of the UK

    RE: Sheffield City

Just to give you the breif history of Sheffield City. The first service from SZD were AIR UK F50`s to Amsterdam which were dropped even though there were good passenger numbers. This was followed by British Regional Jetstream`s to Belfast, Dublin and London City of which only Belfast remains. Sabena started to fly to Brussels using Dash 8`s but pulled out as money problems started to bite. As SAAB 2000 say`s there is a summer saturday charter to Jersey flown by Brymon using a Dash 8 and a executive service once a every week day to London city. Aer Arran took over the Dublin service but are now using ATR42`s .There where plans for British Regonal service`s to Glasgow Edinburgh and Cork nothing ever happened. And still parked near the terminal is ex Aer Arran EI-BPD stirpped of all markings ever since part of the undercarrage collapsed when it came of the runway.
    Hope this helps

If any one ever visits the airport you have good views of everything as a foot path goes along side the airport fence

PS just checked before I posted this it is all quiet at the airport as I have a good view of it from where I live

RE: Teesside – Brussels with Celtic Airways

I do not know if it is the same airline but a new airline with the name Celtic Airlines were going to fly from both Teeside and Sheffield City to Brussels and Cork using Fokker 50`s and I think ATR`s. But this was about 2 years ago. They were going to be based at Teeside and were even listed in Sheffield yellow pages but nothing ever happened.

    RE: Five-engined Jumbo??

Check out page 22 of Junes AIRLINER WORLD to see a more recent 5 engined jumbo.

The jumbo had the hard point designed to carry the 5th engine as some of you say to deliver a spare as it is cheaper to fly one out that way than to pay to air freight one out. It also mean you do not lose any hold space.
