thank you Quantum. 🙂
Doing better than a lot of countries, does not mean can afford 5th gen twin jet design by her own. Well it may be enough money for AMCA, if India willing to foregone the dream a ‘fleet’ of indigenous carrier, SSN, SSBN.
with defence budget at less than 2% of GDP which is only going to go up, India has lot of leeway to allocate funds. AMCA project is alive and well as per recent statement of DRDO chief.
the usual theory goes that the enemy has to have his head down, usually enforced by fast jets and arty for heliborne insertion to work. even then it would need an element of surprise and speed.
this thread needs more pictures.
very interesting info there snufflebug !
not exactly nose-art.

there’s one nuance that’s missed here IMO. ACM Tipnis had conveyed that using air power constitutes an escalation by itself and he needed permission to put the whole IAF on readiness in case pak retaliated in some other sector. he was not ready to commit forces w/o such a permission. getting air crews ready for ops in that environment also took some time.
I seem to vaguely remember that they were puzzled by the operating cost of the Fulcrum and wanted to step down to single engine fighters at one time. Now that I see the pending SMT order, they obviously have changed their minds. Disregard.
it was more internal politics than anything else. fulcrums were ordered by sk hasina govt, when her rival khaleda zia came to power she announced plans to retire them giving some silly excuse. now hasina is back in power. 😀
whats odd is that you figure a delta air frame would be less draggy, yet the tejas has drag issues. Could it be the F-18E of light fighters? 😮
 you need to think beyond the 1950’s. this is the next century, people do not design fighters to be ‘rockets with wings’ anymore, where they minimise drag at the cost of everything else.
tejas has high drag because it has the *lowest* wing loading of all modern fighters (large wing area), which equals excellent maneuverability. the wing design is also not a plain jane delta but rather a complex one. get hold of BHarry’s (one time mod at keypubs) excellent article to know more.
the other problem is a less than suitable L/D ratio, which would be fixed with the plug.
Sri Lanka – possible.
but unlikely. with the LTTE threat gone for the time being SL has no requirement for a fast jet. the kfirs and mig-27’s they have will serve adequately for the time being.
no, he is pointing out that you have no idea what you are talking about.
guys, watch the whole series of that interview. it’s a mine of info.
Well certainly the J-20 Hotdog we all know and love disappeared after the moaning about his thread titles.
He’s out there somewhere, waiting for the right moment to strike, choose a suitably obscure name and slap us all in the face with an inflammatory thread title or two.
Or perhaps he’s already here……;)
yeah I felt it was a bit harsh. a case of people taking things more seriously than they ought to.
Either way, the Western World let Greece down in the 80s and now they are going to make everyone pay (is that it?).
I don’t think that’s official Greek government policy is it?
sound policy making, if true. 😀
this is the sort of discussion that would benefit from Hotdog’s input 😉
reading the thread title I thought it was started by him. :p
rubik, I know about the MKI board and I know that the MKI can carry it. I am yet to see it on an IAF MKI though. after all mistakes do creep in sometimes in info-boards.
about the BGL, I wonder if we had it during kargil or if it was a later acquisition. need to find one of those mirage sqn wallas, unfortunately my sources are mostly fulcrum men.
