you have to google a bit, there was a flurry of articles 3-4 years back but I couldn’t locate those. it’s possible it has been scrapped in favour of the shourya.
AFAIK the actual range of the missile is a bit more than the SW limited range but not as much as you say. the ER would have been a different missile essentially.

Rookh, munir posts here under another name, he might not appreciate the comments. 😉

I think by 2020, every single fighter in IAF/PAF scenario would carry BVRAAMs.

won’t PAF still have some F-16’s without BVRAAM capability ? IAF might have a few mig-27upg too.

Brahmos is certainly far far too big to fit, as is. Kh-58UShK has been specifically made for PAK-FA though, so when the aircraft enters service it will have a ready stand off ARM, which is pretty nice. Range is 245km max.

The latest Kh-31PD has a maximum range of 250 km.

there are other weapons in the works too.
    # 1000 km range stealthy subsonic cruise missile
    # hypersonic brahmos-2 jointly with russia.
    # an extended range brahmos by India alone, since russia has MTCR concerns

well, it seems like IAF is moving up from the an-32 class, MRTA, now C-130j, both in the 20t payload category. that’s not saying they won’t get something in the an-32 class in the future.
the embraer project is in the same class but since MRTA is already rolling, albeit slowly there isn’t much interest in it from India.

Is there a variant available and if so, what are the dimensions & weight of it?

public domain data about dimensions etc is not available. all that is known (again open secret kind of stuff, GOI or IAF will not openly comment) is that there are mirages dedicated to that role and possibly jaguars as well. this is from 2005. and there is some informed speculation that some su-30mki’s might be used in that role too.

the last detailed (relatively speaking) report on air delievered nukes was on integration efforts in late 80’s. obviously, a LOT has changed since then.

not just pilots, most of these test pilots have completed either the fighter combat leader (FCL) or fighter strike leader (FSL) course from TACDE, not to mention a number were squadron commanders of frontline squadrons before coming to this job.

imagine the experience that say, a george thomas (sqn CO of mki sqn No20 lightnings that participated in red flag) brings to the table. and when people like him give positive feedback on the LCA, the top brass sits up and takes notice. there’s a reason why IAF has come around on the LCA issue in the last 5-6 years, the input of its pilots.

to my knowledge till now we have had pilots of mirage-2000, su-30mki, mig-21, sea harrier and jaguar test flying the LCA. and the feedback has been very upbeat.

Finely honed judgement is the first hallmark of a test pilot. Chatting with these men in the briefing room, I am struck by their maturity. This is no bunch of swaggering top guns, but experienced professionals in whom brash youth has given way to an impressive calm that must prevail in a life-threatening flight emergency.
Group Captain George Thomas, built like a bull, has commanded a squadron of Su-30MKIs. Group Captain Ritu Raj Tyagi, the most experienced of the group and a former Jaguar combat commander, ran the last Mumbai marathon as a diversion from flight testing. Captain Jaideep Maolankar, who cut his teeth flying Sea Harrier fighters off naval aircraft carriers, commanded warship INS Ganga as it chased pirates off the Somali coast. Group Captain Venugopal, like Varma, has commanded a MiG-21 squadron on the Pakistani border.
Even Pranjal, the baby of the team, is by conventional standards a veteran pilot, having commanded a Sukhoi-30MKI squadron. Now learning the ropes at the NTFC, he will extensively test the first two Tejas fighters that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited delivers to the IAF this year.

Hey he said mig 21++ twice and fourth gen fighter once. Probably the former is his opinion the other to look polished.

you can stop digging that hole now. :p

ending up in pretty much all its fleet (bar a handful of Jaguars) being BVR armed.

given that the DARIN III includes 2032 even those might carry BVR’s like derby.

Yes, Tejas Mk.2 seems to be shaping up to `not quite` 4.5 gen

I will take the ACM’s assessment over yours. 😉

So why didnt he just call it 4th Gen? or compare it with a Mirgae 2000, which India has.

he did, but to know that you have to learn to read.
why don’t you start by reading the very post you have quoted ?

the same person refers to ACM PV Naik in case your reading skills are yet to catch up with your verbose typing skills.

and this is what he said

SP’s: Could you give the latest update on the indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas development/acquisition programme? ….

CAS: As of now, we have seven LCA aircraft and these are being put through their final paces, before induction into the IAF this year. We are expecting two more limited series production aircraft to join the fleet by the third quarter this year. The LCA, in its present form, is a fourth generation aircraft and we are working with HAL to enhance its capabilities. I am hopeful that the aircraft, in its final operational clearance configuration, will be a much more potent platform, to be a ‘fourth generation plus’. .

CAS stands for Chief of Air Staff in case your googling skills are at the same level as your debating skills.

Pakistan didnt say JF-17 is a F-7+++ or a Mirage 3/5 ++. They went for the the best in their fleet (F-16) and compared their fighter with that.

at least they didn’t compare jf17 to the f-22. thank god for small mercies.

and the same peson has called the Mk1 gen4 and Mk2 4.5 but apparently that’s not good enough for you. you have to go digging for dirt to find hidden meaning in his comments.

what does mig-21++ mean anyway, to you it means “old generation non american aircraft pilloried on discovery channel so it must be trash”, to him as chief of IAF, the mig-21 bison is a credible platform inspite of its age.

anyway, if you want to split hairs how about this, + is usually used to denote 0.5
the mig-21bis is 3rd gen and bison is considered 3.5 gen. so mig-21++ is 4.5 gen.
    where’s the negativity exactly ?

russia did offer partnership as soon as PAKFA was announced. MOD took million years to decide.
