scooter, I referred to you by name after I had responded to the poster immediately above. c’mon, it’s not that hard to see it was not directed at you.

gray area, if you say so. a response to a flamer not to pollute a thread is removed as ‘personal attack’ while the flame remains as it is. some unbiased moderation this ! still, as long as people can discuss without regular attempts at thread derailment, I’m fine with it.

    Mod Edit: Personal attack removed

Scooter, the navy is in no hurry about IAC-2, it will be built in India and it will take as long as it takes. as long as it comes within 2025 ! 😉
at most there might be consultancy and cats might be sourced from abroad. that’s it, little chance of buying the design outright or buying CVF as IAC-2. also, I don’t quite see why IAC-2 might be that much more time consuming than IAC-1. IAC-1 was held up on procurement of materials, not due to design.

Well, the Harrier would be equally vulnerable would it not?
What I meant was, dont use the Harrier for CAS but a dedicated fleet of relatively rugged Su-25 types. They’ll still be dependent on AFB, but then, I really doubt whether Harriers are a sustainable buy given how complex they are, and spares are going to be an issue.

hey, I am not in favour of the harriers either ! :p

the LCA’s are the best bet for that role, in addition to helicopters. if needed we might even field a version with armour plating around cockpit and engine.

it’s not wise to depend on IDRW’s views.

kaveri is primarily being developed now keeping the AMCA in mind. it is also likely to find its place in the future UCAV program. other than that ADA director PS Subramanium says the more powerful kaveri would be used as replacement engines for the first batch of LCA Mk1’s which currently use the GE 404 IN20.

ZOOM, trust me I know what CAS entails, there is no hard and fast rule that an aircraft doing CAS has to be an armoured low altitude flyer.

PGM equipped aircraft can never be a weapon of choice for this purpose, because there are dangers of inflicting the damage on our own troop in case PGM get misfired.

you haven’t thought this through. how is this problem only for PGM equipped aircraft but magically evaporates for dedicated CAS aircrafts ?

    from bharat-rakshak.com

The Kaveri has successfully been tested on its flying test bed in Russia.

History of sorts has been made because this is the first time an Indian engine has powered any aircraft and marks the beginning of a new era.

No link yet. “A little birdie”. A reliable birdie. But it will appear in the news in due course.

My long standing wish for ground strike is that India take over Su-25 production. They are really tough little birds and this one landed fine despite the damage.

Basically, raise the squadron cap from 42 to 55 and bulk up, using additional squadrons of cheaper Su-25s and LCA variants.

with changing AD environment the low level CAS function has become much more dangerous. I think the time has come for CAS to be done from medium height using PGMs other than for attack helos. don’t mistake me, I’m a big fan of the frogfoot but I think that role doesn’t make too much sense now.
the LCA with PGMs will be a much better option. more so because of the cheap availability of DRDO’s new laser guidance kit.

my understanding is pakistan (mostly) does not pay for weapons transfers from US and therefore the ones you listed does not fall under the category of ‘purchase’.
purchase refers to arms transfers from other countries and till now you or anyone else haven’t provided information on any such deal.

The Harrier GR9s, however, offer a role expansion for the Indian Navy. It offers a true strike platform with more power, a heavier payload, more updated avionics, newer airframes, smart weapons, and targeting pods. Given the very multirole nature of the incoming MiG-29Ks, this may be seen as an advantage capability to bring in for training purposes as much as anything.

the K’s are already there, the squadron has been formed and pilots are getting trained in it. while I agree that the K does not currently have any carrier to fly from, there is no need to get what is essentially a very different aircraft in terms of carrier operations, not to mention demanding as well for training. navy jocks anyway train with IAF so training is not that big a problem.

because we haven’t yet heard of any specific deals about pakistan buying arms ?

true, though I doubt the journalist appreciates that particular difference.
however the sea harriers are rather different from the RAF harriers, especially after their respective upgrades.

some dumb reporter who thinks one uniformed service is same as the other must have asked him whether he was interested in them.

    No.
If you go to the FMS site, there tons and tons of DSCA letters of notice to the Congress of possible sales of military equipment that didnt happen, and a lot of those were made in the midle of fierce international competitions that in the end the american company lost.
I can remember DSCA notice letters for Vipers to Austria (two of them, actually), to Brasil, to Romania, etc, etc, etc.

Sintra the difference being in this case there was no competition or prospective deals in the offing. India has not shown interest in PAC or aegis and the F-35 is at a very preliminary stage now if at all it ever progresses further.

there is not going to be a DSCA notice for a competition that doesn’t exist yet.
