Work on the 2nd Arihant class is progressng…

If the 2nd submarine really went to the shipyard from the drawing board, it would mean the 2nd boat is having some changes from 1st unit.

So this time round L & T Hazira has been cut out of the production process completely?:(

I might just be biased, but I think the varyag right now looks in better shape than her sister. Amazing what some new clothes and make up can do for you 😎

Given her significantly more advanced sensor suite and the fact that the Chinese are building her into a pure carrier(space formerly occupied by Granit VLS has probably been used for hangar expansion), plus the fact that she’s essentially brand new, I’d say she IS in better shape than the Kuznetsov.

BTW, Russian ships are usually referred to as ‘he’, so the correct term would be ‘older brother’.:D

Any real information on where the Chinese plan to go from here? More Varyags? Or some CVF-sized supercarriers with steam catapults?:diablo:

Mistrals will have 16 helicpters, 8 Ka-52K and 8 Ka-29. The French will enlarge the bays for the Ka-29.

    Why no Ka-31s?

I have a question for the experts on radar systems here which has been perplexing me for some time.

Despite thier dated design, the Russian Navy continues to use the old 3S-25 Garpun-B(NATO: ‘Plank Shave’) and Mineral-ME(NATO: ‘Band Stand’) radars for the volume search role even on their next-gen warships(20380, 22350).

Presumably, this is because these radars, in addition to their usual function, also have a datalink for OTH targeting of SSMs like Klub and Yakhont. For that reason new Chinese warships have both a separate planar array volume search radar and a Mineral-ME for the SSM targeting role.

I’m curious about how this feature works and how it’s different from more modern Western volume search radars like RAN-40L, SMART-L, S1850S and so on. Shouldn’t any radar be capable of guiding SSMs? If not, couldn’t a datalink be made to work with other radars as well?

Actually, nope. Looks like Baltisky has been fully and thoroughly raided by its owners (OPK) and all productive assets sold off. The only thing that remains of the enterprise is its administrative offices. OSK says it likely will not acquire what little is left of the enterprise.

I had thought OSK bought it from OPK back in 2009 when it first went into receivership, but that deal was apparently never finalized and now likely will never be.

Talk about a colossal waste. I thought Russia was trying to increase its shipbuilding capability and expland its shipyards?

Problems at Severnaya lead to police raid and OSK today said it could take some of the work off Severnaya’s plate. This could just be a political assault by OSK on Severnaya….

I’m curious to know why Severnaya appears to have a near-monopoly over the Russian Navy’s warship orders. The 22350 frigates, the 20380 corvettes, all the nuclear submarines…

Whatever happened to Baltisky Zavod? The ones who built the first batch of Talwars? The last military contract they had was supplying propulsion shafts for the Indian P15A destroyers. Heck, even the Kirov cruisers(which were orginally built by Baltisky Zavod) are going to be refurbished by Severnaya. Does the Russian Duma have some grudge against them or something?

Looks like the superstructure has been treated with RAM coatings. I wouldn’t have thought there was any point of stealth on something that large.:D

Original plan was to have mixture of Kashtan and VL-shtil for air defense but IN disapproved of it from what i last heard only AK-630 will be fitted. Barak will be installed in refit in India.

I understand the Indian Navy has had a low opinion of Kashtan ever since it failed some interception tests in the 90s(eventually picking Barak) but where is the logic in installing a measly AK-630 instead? Only one cannon, that too with open-loop guidance. It’s far worse than Kashtan.

I wonder if they’re just being cheap here. If they didn’t want Kashtan’s added SAMs they could order the Duet instead.

witcha, these are small speedboats, the pvt yards are making much larger patrol vessels for navy and CG.

Surely they can spare capacity for a large order of smaller vessels. It wouldn’t be their first time either; I distinctly remember reading about L & T getting a larger order for waterjet-propelled FACs a few years ago. Why buy from abroad when you can build up domestic expertise instead?

Why was this news not posted? This is a big boost to the Sri Lankans and also shows the state of affairs of Indian yards.

If what I heard from some local channels was right, these costly French boats have already become useless as they are not fit to be used during the mansoons.

    French cost – Rs.40million/boat
    Sri Lankan cost – Rs.37.5million/boat

What the heck? Why not order from our many private sector yards instead? There’s L & T(with a new yard in Tamil Nadu), Bharti, Pipavav, ABG Shipyards… The Defence Ministry seems to be going out of its way not to cultivate any domestic competition for the state shipyards.:(

Is there any information on the disc-shaped IFF on top of the Fregat-analogue radar? It’s certainly different from all the Russian variants.

Would anyone please consider my query regarding the radio mast? Why is it a fixture on every modern frigate design including Russian ones?

If I recall correctly the BrahMos-2 hypersonic AShM is being developed with the UKSK VLS in mind. Given the range is limited to 300km only for MTCR reasons, it may be quite possible to have a 450+km domestic version, which would pack as much power as Granit.

Also, there’s been talk about extending the Klub’s range to 400-500km, so that may not be a major problem anymore. The Kirovs can carry more Klub/BrahMos-2s than Granits, so it may actually improve their attack capability.

That’s something I don’t quite understand about the European Frigates (and Destroyers); for the most part they are small (relatively speaking). This limits the space for growth etc.

Why is that so? Why don’t Europe build bigger ships? Isn’t there something about “air is free steel is cheap”? Or am I missing something?

6000 tonnes is actually on the higher end for a frigate. It’s the destroyers(Daring class, Type 052 series et al) that look undersized at 6000-7600 tonnes.

I guess the Navies just want the best all-round capability they can pack into a standard, mass-built platform.

One thing I’m curious about his why all the newer warship designs(including Russian ones) come with a huge ‘radio mast’ behind the main one. What exactly does it contain to justify that size?

JanGoBo, I don’t even know why we are arguing now. You can have the last word on the matter. I, for one, am sufficiently convinced and see no need to dispute such technicalities.

As for the matter of the boilers, we’ll just have to see. Every Soviet aircraft carrier including even the Kuznetsov has had at least one major boiler fire and near-chronic problems with the KVG boilers, and as such it seems natural for me that the Vikramaditya isn’t going to be problem-free, regardless of training and maintenance. But like I said, we’ll just have to wait and see.:)
