I’ve heard of Soviet and American bomber/fighter crews flashing Playboys at each other. 😀

I heard a different story; apparently back in the Cold War days US navy sailors would wave a slice of pizza in front of Russian warships, because Russian Navy rations were crap in comparison. The Russians would wave back with a bottle of vodka, because the USN is a ‘dry navy’: no alcohol allowed on board.:D

If the 3M14 kalibr missile has a limited range of 300km in order to meet the international requirements for export, is possible the kalibr witch is russian use only to have range comperable to the tomahawk?

I believe the Alfa/Klub/Kalibr family was mainly developed for export. The Russian Navy adopted it only recently(with Stereguschy and Gorshkov class) and so are only talking about increasing the range now.

No, I don’t think they’ll increase the range as much as Tomahawk because Kalibr uses a turbojet engine which consumes fuel faster than the turbofans used by Tomahawk/Granat type long-range missiles.

Black Sea Fleet HQ is “dewatered”

The reason for such radical measures of Ukrainian authorities was trivial indebtedness of the fleet’s organizations for these municipal services in Jan-Feb, 2011.

According to the source, “all appropriate instructions to make freshwater and utility water reserves have been done; however, it is not improbable that heating and gas cutoffs would be the next steps”.

One thing I’ve gathered from reading about Russian overseas(i.e. situated in other ex-Soviet nations) military facilities is that they often default or dispute over payments. Can’t blame the foreign governments for being put off.

IMHO the Russian Navy should have let the Sevastopol agreements expire and redistributed the Black Sea Fleet’s resources among their other, shrinking fleets.

From what I’ve read Club is pretty similar to Granat(the LACM), except the former uses a turbojet second stage and the latter uses a turbofan. This seems to have been done intentionally to reduce the range within MTCR restrictions.

New problems with the Mistral deal,

    http://rusnavy.com/news/navy/index.php?ELEMENT_ID=11633

Russian-French talks on Mistral have reached a deadlock – Kommersant
“Russia is ready to pay for both Mistrals not more than EUR 980 mln, but France insists on the minimal price of EUR 1.15 bln”, writes the newspaper. Meanwhile, neither Rosoboronexport nor Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) nor Ministry of Trade and Industry nor United Shipbuilding Corporation agreed to give any comments.

According to Kommersant, the reason for discords is “Russian defense ministry’s amateurish approach to the contract”. During negotiations Russian party offered to include the costs of license and technical documents for some parts to be constructed in Russia. (Supposedly, Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard would be a subcontractor and perform 20% works on the first ship and 40% – on the second one). However, French party refused to include licenses and technical documents into the contract cost.

The Russians may finally understand a little of how India felt about the Gorshkov debacle.

Antonov offers naval patrol aircraft An-74 for India’s tender

During the Aero India 2011 exhibition Ukrainian state company Antonov held a number of negotiations with the view to promote An-74 aircraft generation in Southeast Asian market; among other subjects discussed, the company considered offering of the aircraft’s naval patrol version for India’s tender, said the Antonov’s press release.

Before the earlier tender got cancelled Antonov was considered the weakest contender given the (probable) maintenance issues compared to the civilian platforms offered by the others as well as the Ukrainian electronics suite. I don’t have high hopes for them this time.

Aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be transferred to India late in 2012 – official
Answering the question when it is planned to deliver Admiral Gorshkov to Indian Navy, Dmitriev said: “By the end of 2012. That was stipulated in documents, and we’re going to keep the term. The ship’s trials are scheduled in 2011-2012”.

Speaking of transfer of SSN Nerpa to Indian Navy, he said that “everything is ready, there’s no problem”.

I hope they aren’t planning to cut corners and finish the job in refits later on. Already the air defence system has been omitted and will be fitted only afterwards in India.

New Missiles for the Russian Navy

    http://rusnavy.com/news/navy/index.php?ELEMENT_ID=11558

Flight range of Club cruise missiles is about to be increased
Answering the question whether the company has plans to increase flight range of Club missiles from 220-270 km to 500 km, Atkov said “we’re ready to increase the range. There’s no problem to do that by reducing payload weight. It is absolutely possible considering present-day missile technology. And we have already made an appropriate proposal to Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation. Technically, the missile’s flight range can be easily increased up to 500 km”, he added.

Hmm… if it was that simple couldn’t China and India do it too?

Russia will deploy mobile coastal missile system Bastion armed with supersonic antiship cruise missiles Yakhont at Kuril Islands, reports Interfax referring to Russia’s General Staff. The systems will be used for protection of Kurils’ seashore. Exact amount of Bastion systems planned to be stationed at Kurils has not been specified.

This appears to be the big brother of the land-based BrahMos. Except with a greater number of reloads. They should develop a land-based Granit.:dev2:

With a few deck edge extensions you could add a proper SAM system. Or at least a CIWS.

Doesn’t look like there’s room for many helicopters though.

I’ve searched and downloaded for research all the images and speaking of someone building this ship in scale 1/72 there are quite a few things wrong but there are also many things cleared up for me. Thanks for the link.

I first saw your model a few years ago. I didn’t know you had an account here too. Compared to the juicy pics you posted, this stuff isn’t as detailed, but I’m glad to have been of help.:D

Would it even be feasible to give the Varyag gas turbine propulsion? They’d have to completely remodel the interiors of the ship(designed to accomodate 8 boilers and four steam turbine shafts) and while they’re at it design a new propulsion system from scratch. For the same reason I was leery when internet warriors predicted gas turbines and nuclear reactors when talking about the Kuznetsov’s refit.

Thanks again. But isn’t this stuff just general electromagentic pulse-related research? It doesn’t say anything about electromagnetic catapults. What’s more, this research looks mainly R & D oriented, it isn’t developed anywhere near as much for EMALS to be a reality.

Russian institutes have the knowledge and capability to develop such a system, but it’d take close to a decade from when they sanction it, and will probably cost a bundle too. It would just be quicker and cheaper to go STOL/STOBAR.

PS: I don’t want to seem greedy, but after everything you’ve showed me, is there a chance you have information on the Soviet Mars-Passat radar system as well?:dev2:

Actually, they could eliminate either the S1850 or Artisan radar and save a couple hundred million. And armor plating? What’s the point in the era of supersonic AshMs?

Also, can anybody PLEASE help me out with range figures for the Searchwater 7000MR radar? I can’t find any at all. Even the official brochure doesn’t have it. The Seaspray 7500E has a max stated range of 320NM: that’s a pretty high bar.

It’s not a rumour. In 1986 so-called “technological” steam cat BS-1 was operational at NITKA. It was used for tests of Svetlana-2 arrestor system. Main problems which were not solved at that time – leaking expandable seals for catapult cilinders and heating system for Arctic operations.

It has to be added that since early 80’s (for around 15 years) IVTAN (Institute of high temperatures) together with TsAGI and MiG design bureau were involved in NIR “Shampoo” designing EMALS.

Interesting. You’ve got all kinds of juicy information.:D

Could you give me a few links? I don’t mind if they’re in Russian.

In any case, provided the PAK-FA has the STOL capability required the simplest solution would be STOBAR. For AWACS they could revive the old An-71 STOL project(they’d need to design and build a new naval AWACS plane anyway).
