I wouldn’t call it junk, but yes, that’s a steep price to pay for a dated platform like that. I imagine updating the systems would further double the price. The Russian Navy is unlikely to cough up that amount in the near future given its priorities. At best we’ll have a situation like the Kirovs where it’s laid up in ‘reserve’ for another decade.
Fregat radars are solid pieces of equipment. They are like the SPY series – undergoing constant upgrades for future vessels from what I understand.
Hmm… Can’t quite agree there. They’re certainly a cost-effective solution for frigate-sized vessels with medium range SAMs, but they are essentially late 80s technology and fall behind all the new Western AEGIS-type phased array radars in terms of performance: range, target tracking capability, number of targets, ECCM etc. Note that long-time foreign users like China and India are switching from Fregat to Western-style AESA systems for their future surface combatants(Type 358/Sea Lion and EL/M-2258/MF-STAR respectively).
No concrete details yet. All rumors – typical crap is told. New electronics, new defense missiles, maybe new propulsion.
I thought the terms being thrown around in the media report were just wild speculations(Nuclear reactors? Steam catapults?) but I didn’t want to be impolite.:o But seriously, aside from an overhaul of her boilers and an upgrade to the Radar/SAM complex I don’t see any major changes happening.
I think some of the SAM armament is still up for changes though – some say it will be the new BUK SAM modeifications — some say it will be the 9M96/D with active homing.
What about the radar? Has the Russian navy finally moved beyond the MR-7xx Fregat variants that have been seen on virtually every major surface ship for the past few decades?
Well, the Russians initially wanted to develop the whole fighter themselves. Serious talk about involving India only came about when the project was finalised after granting Sukhoi the contract. I doubt a penny of Indian funding would come forth without Indian industry getting it’s promised 25% share of the R & D.
Today, the 2nd keel of the Gorshkov 22350 class frigate was laid down.
Admiral Kasatonov
I’m rather interested in the Russian next generation frigate. Assuming that diagram is accurate this ship won’t have any of the familiar Russian radars like MR-7xx(Top Plate) or Podberezovik. Has any information been released on its weapons and sensor suite?
India asks US to remove ISRO, DRDO from banned list
I wonder how much of this is motivated by the failure of ISRO’s cryogenic engine. It’s time India set those moronic MTCR protests(who the heck uses cryogenic engines in ICBMs?) aside and purchased engine technology from Russia and the West.
Ah! I never knew that. Thanks.
It would make no sense to seek Indian funding for the project if they still had to spend their own money on every aspect. Anyway, even some of the Russian news channels are reporting that HAL will develop the Mission Computer, FBW and navigation systems.
Well, maybe if the missiles were painted with RCS reduction material?;)
I didn’t mention radar. Avionics include more than that, I hope you are aware.
FBW system, EW and MWS, the fancy new autopilot potentially, etc.
Aren’t all those slated to be developed by India?
Pardon me for my ignorance, but what difference does a few decimal point differences in mach number make in this era of BVR? Whether a plane flies at Mach 1.6 or Mach 2.6 it’s equally likely to get shot down by a Mach 4 AAM or Mach 6 SAM.
I doubt the F-35’s speed will have anything to do with its expected superiority over the Flanker or Fulcrum.
Um, I was referring to the J-15.:o
Russia planned to sell the Su-33 to the PLAN, enough to equip two naval fighter regiments, but soon backed off because of the J-11B being manufactured without the benefit of a license (retrofitted with Chinese avionics).

An Su-33 prototype was imported from the Ukraine to kick start the J-15 Flying Shark development, fulfilling the PLAN’s requirement for a naval air superiority fighter.

In the first pic can anyone tell me what that lifting fuselage panel(behind the cockpit) is for?
Interesting. And the Meteor will supposedly use gelled propellants for some special flight mechanism. And the R-77M will be a ramjet. The next-generation AAMs sure are getting outlandish.:D
In other words it’s already been deployed but it still isn’t performing as intended yet.
Nuclear submarines are supposed to be long-range, blue water assets. Shouldn’t the base be somewhere like the Andaman and Nicobar islands for better reach?
