    I have read the book; first of all it is a completely different thing from Mig Pilot: Belenko was the son of a real poor farmer kolkoz family so he started doubt about the communist sistem from the beginning and at the end of the book it is describet how he loves the US and occidental way of life. Zuyev has a complete different background; his parents are quite well living employees ( he says that when he was a child had some money to buy cakes after school.. Belenko according to the book first had good tasting and satisfactory in USA..), until the final years of Soviet Union he does not realize the problems of the Commy sistem; anyway at the bottom he hates the red power but he loves the Russia (if he was still alive probably would be a nationalist member of Putin party!!).
    So He describes the 29 as a perfect plane; problems to the radar are due in the book to sabotage of pro western russian technicians; also soviets tactics are described as the best! It seems a Clancy book written by a russian when soviet planes and tactics are described;
    not a great book… Try

    Wrong. The 2000-5 did field Mica and the F-16 AIM-120. Both field radar with >100 km range and are supersonic. All that does allow to engage and disengage at will. Since the 90s BVR and related positioning is the name of the game. After that comes Fox 2, when a sleepy pilot was surprised. When you will save money you can try Fox 3 under such conditions maybe. I do not evenremember, when the last Fox 3 was called in earnest.
    In 1982 an Israeli F-15 driver did remember his first kills in a Mirage III. He did not fire his AIM-9L, the first weapon of choise, but used his Vulcan to feel the thrill again.

    dear Sens de cazz, the israeli pilot had AIM 9L on Mirage III????

    No, just pilots had fun. Otherwise they call “Fox 1” and the M346 is gone.

    I correct , Boyd is right if there are 8 M346 for every F 16 or Su 27 …heeheh:rolleyes:

    In April of this year, the Italian Air Force conducted a two week evaluation of the M-346 at Practica di Mare. Part of the evaluation included dissimilar ACM, but I am not sure if the aircraft tested included the Typhoon.

    During the UAE evaluation in August, the aircraft was flown against the Mirage 2000-5 and Block 60 F-16. Several “kills” were achieved by the M-346.

    Mark

    It seems John Boyd was right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Well then you’re basically touching on a budgetary issue and not a technical one.

    Reminds me of the press conference, during the actual war itself, given by “Stormin’ Norman Schwarzkopf”. When after showing to the press, AH-64 gun camera video footage of the same helicopters attacking Iraqi armoured vehicles, he then turned around and wondered out loud as to why the Apache pilots used their Hellfire missiles to destroy the Iraqi vehicles when they could have used the “cheaper” 30mm cannon instead!

    If a cheaper weapon was actually available to use instead, it probably was a waste of money… but who cares?? Just because the Sparrow was used when it didn’t need to be used doesn’t imply that it isn’t a useful weapon in other situations… and it doesn’t mean it’s an unreliable weapon one either – so stop calling it that.

    Well, the sparrow is reliable

    Obviously the pilots involved selected to use the AIM-7 instead of the AIM-9 in most of the air combats – and they must have had their reasons for doing so, presumable because the Sparrow ensured a better likelihood of a kill?

    I don’t know… the second kill by usn F 18 was done by a AIM-9 : the pilot fired a first missile he though was a sparrow, but, seeing a strange smoke plume, realized something was doing bad with the AIM 7, so reselected the Sparrow mode on the trigger and fired a second missile (a sparrow this time). the sidewinder hit the target( MIg 21) and the sparrow flown in the ball of fire.

    Read somewhere that AIM-7M SSKP was about 33% in GW1. AIM-120 record was very good until an incident back in 93 (I think) where a large number of AMRAAMS (and a few AIM-54s) were fired well outside their no escape zones at Iraq aircraft in the southern no fly zone by USN Hornets and Tomcats.

    I remember 1999 , amraam and phoenix VS MIG 25
