The airline will fly to 11 destinations from Coventry Airport
A new budget airline based at Coventry Airport took off on Wednesday, despite a wrangle with local planners.
Low-cost outfit Thomsonfly’s launched its first services to Jersey, Malaga, Rome, Valencia and Venice.

Travel group TUI bought the airport in February, but has been told it cannot use a temporary terminal built at the site without planning permission.

Warwick District Council says an Environmental Impact Assessment and planning permission are needed.

The Council has ordered Coventry Airport to stop using the terminal and has agreed to issue an enforcement notice over the facility at a meeting on Wednesday.

Weeks of legal arguments could follow to resolve the row.

The council says the building is over 500 square metres and therefore needs plannning permission, but the airport claims it is smaller than that.

The authority has received more than 2,500 letters objecting to the expansion of Coventry Airport.

Thomsonfly intends to begin flying to 11 European locations.

Coventry Airport has said it has referred the matter to its lawyers.

That attitude is all well and good but remember that a 737 went down at COV a few years back and could have had catastrophic consequences for people living near the airfield. It was bad enough that the crew were killed. I think that if the protests against Thomsonfly prove successful then Thomsonfly will just move to BHX.

I don’t think so. BHX already has MYTLite, the whole idea here was that TUI could have CVT, set up a new lcc where there is not one, use the airport for charter flights in the summer – much cheaper than BHX – and not worry about competitors at the airport.

As for the plane that went down, well, what do you expect – every so often you will get a plane crashing. It was one of the 1st incidents like that for a long long time if, not it was the 1st to happen like that at CVT. The local residents are just pathetic nimby’s. I am sure they love going to BHX, not giving a damn abour its residents, but don’t want it on their doorstep. Hard luck. The airport was there before all of them. And you know what, one of the leader’s of the CAECA (Campaign Against the Expansion of Coventry Airport) is a Scotsman (not that that makes him a bad person),but, I bet he came to Coventry int he 50s/60s to get the jobs at all the facotires that were being built, bet he never complained about them and the environmental damage to local communtities effected by the polluting lorries and the accidents caused by lorries etc. No, people forget so quickly. If you live near an airport then accept it – it may expand.

    😑 😑 😑

A-ha. Right. VS do have PTVs in ALL their planes, however at the moment they have 4 different types. The best is V:PORT, which is the one I described above, it is fitted to about a third of their planes. Then their is Odyessey, Arcadia and Nova. Odyessey and Arcadia are v.much the same, except Odyessey gives you a bigger screen.

However, the LGW planes have NOVA. This is a new system to VS and they will replace it by the end of next year. This is because the VS LGW 744s are from the cancelled Alitalia order, which RB snapped up quick. So, they already were installed with this IFE called ‘NOVA’. It only has about 7 channels and 1 TV channel and a Skymap, but there is a kids channel for the children. BUT, no games.

However, should you be lucky, they may do a plane swop if one of the LGW planes go tech, and you will get a LHR plane with V:PORT or Odyessey on it.

I think there’s is very similar to BA’s. The screen is exactly the same.

It’s great for Coventry, but the stupid Nimby’s in the surrounding areas like Leamington and Kenilworth are protesting – get a life!

BA does have the Omnia system on all 777s and 747s, not sure about the few long-haul 767s though. I like their PTV system and it has been recently upgraded to 18 channels.

The AF one looks basic to me, the screen is v.small and they do not have it on many planes.

Delta has it on the 777s, not sure about the 763s though, have a look at http://www.seatguru.com and it will tell you.

I was asking about the variety of what you get – games, tv, film, phone, e-mail etc.

    V:PORT – Virgin’s latest gives you: –

10.4 inch screen in Upper Class
9 inch screen in Premium Economy / Economy
300 hours of Video on Demand content
14 channels of Audio on Demand and a jukebox with over 45 CDs ranging from Chopin to Elvis Presley to PJ Harvey. Passengers can listen to an entire CD or just an individual track.

    A selection of audio books
15 computer games, of which 3 are multi-player and one, Battlemail Kung-fu, has been developed exclusively for Virgin
A Quick Find facility that allows passengers to look for films starring their favourite movie star, comedy shows or language programming
A dedicated Kid’s Zone that has it’s own menus and contains programming suitable for children and a parental block
The system will allows passengers to send emails and SMS messages.
IMap is a brand new fully interactive map application – not only can passengers track their flight, but they can also roam around the world, zoom in on different destinations and points of interest.

    Coming Soon

Email and Intranet will be expanded allowing people on the ground to respond to text messages sent from the aircraft.

The V:Port system is on ALL the new A340-600 series and certain 747-400 aircraft.

Yeah, I suppose you are right. He was funny, I thought it was Sadddam on the poster! I remeber that guy saying; ‘I am not afraid, you need not be afraid!’ and then the American tanks rolled in behind him!
