Just flatten Iceland & the volcano with nukes (they deserve it after all the cash they stole from the UK), and in the mean time put Constellations back on the trans-Atlantic flights – that’ll sort it! 😀

If this carries on, its going to be a fantastic weekend for VFR flying – no waiting at the hold at EMA for jets, that’s for sure!!!

Airspace isn’t all shut down – plenty of reports of light aircraft, even King Airs
and the likes, wizzing around VFR including in controlled airspace and quite enjoying the lack of other traffic clogging things up. I think the “airspace all shut” thing is just a media thing designed to give the arm-chair passengers some understanding of the situation – if they said “aeroplanes may still fly visually…” then some laymen would start to ask why airlines can’t do that. The NOTAMS were fairly specific – no IFR clearances – which if you think about it is logical because IFR implies not being visual at all times, which in turn means that an aircraft could be flown into ash with the crew unawares. VFR on the other hand requires aircraft to be visual all times, which hopefully means most of them will avoid big black clouds if they encounter any!

The cloud of volcanic ash is now spread across the UK and continuing to travel south. In line with international civil aviation policy, no flights other than agreed emergencies are currently permitted in UK controlled airspace.

The above statement (possibly worded ambiguously but so that the layman can understand) seems to be at odds with the current NOTAMs. Current nav warning/NOTAM:

IN ACCORDANCE WITH ICAO VOLCANIC ASH CONTINGENCY PLAN, NO IFR CLEARANCE WILL BE ISSUED FOR PENETRATION OF THE FORECAST CONTAMINATED AREA WI UK AIRSPACE. VFR OPR SHOULD EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION AND MUST ASSURE THEMSELVES THAT THEIR INTENDED FLIGHT CAN BE CONDUCTED IN A SAFE MANNER BEFORE FLYING. THEY SHOULD NOTE THAT ATSOCAS CONTROL CAPACITY MAY BE SEVERELY LIMITED DURING THE PERIOD.

So the puddle jumpers can still fly – and I suppose BA could always fly VFR to New York etc! :p

I guess all this no-flying will make the eco-mentalists happy – mind you, they’ll probably find a reason to whinge about volcanic ash instead! :diablo:

Delta parked a couple of A330s (and a few other jets that might not otherwise be expected to be stored) over the winter – they were in need of heavy checks and weren’t needed in the fleet for a while due to the downturn, so they were parked in the desert rather in the more harmful damp and cold climate at MSP/DTW. They have now been taken out of store and ferried to maintenance base for overhaul.

Long haul so far this year I’ve done:

    UA LHR-LAX-LHR (Jan)
    SQ LHR-SIN-LHR (Feb)
    UA LHR-SFO-LHR (Mar)

Based on my experience on these six flights, I’d take UA crews over the SQ crews if I had a choice. No doubt the SQ crews are efficient if its an at-seat service you want, but its all rather clinical. On the other hand, if you bother to get up and talk to the UA crews when you need something (as opposed to just sit in the seat and expect them to be waiters/waitresses), the UA crews have all been excellent and friendly.

As I udnerstand it, they’re looking for other opportunities too for Europe, though I expect it will be more of the same, low frequency, leisure orientated stuff.

Actually, they’re doing it (once a week only, for a limited time in the peak summer travel period) to gain Oceanic / ETOPS experience which will allow them to bid for / operate flights for the US military – as the services require a level of experience before a carrier may do such work.

So they may well be looking for other opportunties (even in Europe), but I’m not sure I’d describe them as “leisure orientated” 🙂

The classic “airline” movies have already been mentioned…

A few others worthy of consideration:

    • Whilst not featuring “airline” type commercial aviation, The Flight of the Phoenix (both original and remake) heavily feature civil aircraft – the former a Fairchild Packet and the latter a Fairchild Flying Boxcar
    • Equally whilst not directly an “airline” move, The Aviator isn’t a bad movie that covers some interesting non-military aviation history, primarily surrounding Howard Hughes
    • Air America is set in a psuedo-military environment – its an entertaining enough movie though
    • If you want a laugh/grimace (tacky movie) and don’t have to pay to watch it, Pushing Tin is an air traffic control based movie
    • Die Hard 2 has quite a lot of airline-type action – mostly filmed at Marana/Pinal Air Park with the help of Evergreen International Airlines
    • Much newer (i.e. recent), are Flight Plan and Snakes on a Plane, although I care for neither of them
    • I guess Alive is worthy of some consideration if you’re interested in a real-life story of an aeroplane crash and the aftermath for the passengers
