Sigh! Do you REALLY want details of all 1711 flights I’ve made in my life? They’re all in a spreadsheet so it can be done, even if it does clog up the forum!
Andy
One word: Aeroflot.
I know you’ve now said this was meant in jest, but this is urban myth anyway. Given the size of the airline and the harsh environmental conditions in which Aeroflot sometimes have to operate, they have for many years had a pretty good record. Very few Aeroflot incidents in the past are attributed to maintenance or airplane airworthiness, and what accidents they have suffered have been predominantly weather or aircrew related.
Andy
Scary recent examples including the 3 engine 747 trans-atlantic flight and subsequent fuel emergency and the similar A319 flight where the instruments failed and then the crew continuing the flight is ridiculous.
redsquare,
Much of what you said makes sense, but I’m afraid that the two BA incidents you highlight have NOTHING to do with maintenance practices or standards. If there is anything to question in those cases (and in the former I have no issues with the pilots decision to operate trans-Atlantic as it was clearly allowed for in SOPs), then it is crew judgement that should be questioned and not maintenance.
And as soon as we move onto crew judgement, then Ryanair is as much in the frame as BA, given Ryanair has had its share of such events including the late / flap overspeed descent in Sweden and subsequent return flight without any checks, the rather dodgy orbit on short final into Beauvais, etc.
Andy
I noticed the “one only” too, but seeing as most others had posted more than one I didn’t want to miss out. However, if I had to select one of mine, it’d be the Ryanair 737.
There’s been some great pics posted here – the Binter ATR stood out a mile when it was posted in the ACE topic and it still does. The sky-scape towards the top is also excellent. I just wish everyone would post at [say] 800 pixels because as soon as someone goes to 1000 pixels or more those of us who use screens at 10245 have to do left and right scrolling to see the entire picture.
Andy
PS: PMN, Canon 20D
Argh! So many pictures, so little time to chose.
Many of my favourites from 2005 are military or warbirds, but in the spirit of this forum I select just one military subject:
Next, the Oracle Challenger, in part because of its obvious connection to my current employer:
OK, so now we move onto heavies. I’ve always enjoyed Howard Beach at JFK, and this one is probably the most appropriate for me as it was departing on the Connie 207 to my “home” airport, EMA, on the regular twice-weekly service:
Going back to a dismal day at Miami in January, this one quite appeals due to the humidity causing so much condensation and the wingtip vortex trail:
Finally, my favourite commercial image of the year – I still hate Ryanair, but I like this picture, the overall effect of which I’d had in mind for a long time, although I did not particularly expect the subject to be a Ryanair 737:
OK, I’m done.
Andy
Good stuff… I see another of O’Leary’s old clunkers has made it to Hurn… And would YOU fly in that 727???? 😉
Andy
To get to T4, you have a couple of choices. Either get off the tube at Hatton Cross and take the bus (as discussed above) to continue on the tube to Heathrow Central and then take the Heathrow Express (HEx) to T4 – HEx is free between central and T4. The former – Hatton Cross plus bus – is probably quickest.
At CDG you will arrive at Terminal 2B. Its probably quickest to walk to the station (which is between 2D and 2F I think – or maybe between 2B and 2D?), and then take the RER train into central Paris – its stops at Gare du Nord and several other stations past Gare du Nord which are closer to the usual tourist attractions. Queues for train tickets at the airport can be long, but the automatic ticket machines will issue a day return ticket to any station in the metro central zone (change from the RER to the metro at most central Paris stations).
I would recommend on-line checkin (print your own boarding passes) the night before you fly, or use the automatic checkin machines in the terminal. If you checkin at a desk, ask for same-day return checkin, as this will save you time at CDG when you are flying back.
Andy
Oh, these are great memories for me, as I frequent LAX. 🙂 Just a couple of questions for anyone that can shed some light:
2) Is that the Ill-fated Egypt Air 763?
Greekdude1,
That second question I can answer easily – yes, SU-GAP was the 763 that was lost out of JFK a few years later.
It also occurred to me that the China Airlines 744 could have been the one that went for a swim in Hong Kong harbour too (I know for sure I have a picture of that somewhere), but in this case it isn’t.
Andy
DC-6…Neither Atlantic Cargo a/c have flown for nearly a year now (although apparently they have their engines run from time to time), and with the coming of the ATP-F to the fleet I sadly doubt we’ll see this classic four-engined prop flying in the UK again (unless the Red Bull a/c comes to a UK airshow).
I think that there’s one DHL(Swiftair) Convair 580 left in Europe – maybe its gone already. But with the rundown of the Spanish fleet and no likelihood of Atlantic’s 440 flying, I think we’ve seen our last Convair.
How much longer for the venerable Shed in the UK? OK, so Aurigny still operates one and Emerald use them for freight, but the BAC Express examples are either layed up or sold and the Highland example(s) are operated by Portugese company Aerocondor now.
And finally, whilst I’m sure that there’s still some life in the old birds, any problems at Emerald will undountedly kill off the 748 in the UK.
Andy
Indeed, wishing everyone at least as good as 2006 as 2005 was, and hopefully a year that’s even better!
Andy
Just thought I’d add one more from LAS:

Why the addition…? Well, this one’s been on a.net for a while, and the original slide was bought by a company in Texas last week for $750 – yup, getting on for £400!!! 😎 The sale (and the need to find the original slide again) was what inspired me to scan a few others.
Thanks again for the comments.
Andy
Not news really – they did that every Christmas for the nine years I worked there.
Andy
Thanks for the comments…
How long had 744’s been around in 1994 ??
744s were flying from 1988, first delivery in 1989 – N401PW was the first, I think, which is now N661US with Northwest. Interesting to realise that it won’t be too long before the first 744 is 20 years old!
Andy
Then, we moved up to a sunnier Las Vegas prior to New Year

All Kodachrome 64 slide scans…
Best,
Andy
