This door thing was nagging at me because I had an idea it was fairly standard on L10s… I’ve checked various sources both books and the web, and it seems that the lower lobe door forward of the wing was pretty much standard on all TriStars except the short-body -500. A few appear not to have windows in the doors, but they seem to have the door.

Darn! Should have gone myself… Was thinking about it but decided a lay-in was preferable! Nice pics Grey – especially like the British Jet which I believe is due in EMA tomorrow.

What’s the frisbee fairing?
Its the triangular shaped fairing below between the center engine intake and the top of the fuselage. Only newer build long-body TriStars had that fairing, which was introduced onto all TriStar version to improve aerodynamic efficiency after it was initially incorporated into the TriStar 500 design. I think it was also available as a retrofit when early build TriStars were upgraded to longer range versions, but all of Eastern’s L10s were early build and none were upgraded.

9L-LDN… L1011 TriStar 100 msn 1221 first flight in 1981. Started life with TWA as N31033 (so, an old friend from LHR then), then SE-DPP with Time Air Sweden, TF-ABM with Air Atlanta and various lessees, C-GRYU with Royal Aviation, back to Air Atlanta, XU-122 with Kampuchea Airlines and finally 9L-LDN.

Also, note how the tristar pictured is probably ex Eastern. You can tell by the extra door in the wingroot. It was the entry to the galley which Eastern had under the pax cabin. As far as I know only Eastern took that option.
Nope, no way is that TriStar ex-Eastern. Eastern didn’t have any of the newer L10s with the frisbee fairing… I’ll check its history…

where abouts were you??
Across the road from the visitor centre (dull, morning, shots through holes in the fence) for the first few, then down near T5 for the climb outs after the sun came out.
How the hell did i miss them! I was there from 11 till 3!
I think the expression is… If you snooze, you loose! :p :diablo:

My 1:400 scale “haul” from the Heathrow Enthiasts Fair yesterday was three BlueBox ANA TriStars (each different), four Phoenix JAS MD-90s (each different, to go with the three I already have to complete the set), and two Aeroclassics JAL 727-100s. Though I didn’t realise it at the time, I seem to have had a bit of a Japanese day! Photos to follow…
Andy
Thanks for the comments… 🙂
so many special colour schemes, too!
You don’t realise the half of it! I missed the JAL 747-400 with the footballer down the side and the ANA Pocket Monsters 747-400… There was also a Yes L1011 visited, which I was in the wrong place for (wrong place when it arrived, wrong place when it left! 😡 ). It was also a good day for UA new colours – two 777s and two 767s. The only thing I’d have liked that wasn’t there was the Lufthansa A321 retrojet – that’s for another day!
How does the new AC scheme compare with the models ?
Not sure Ren… I haven’t got any of the DW models in the new Air Canada colours, and right now I’m looking for my Aeroclassics 767 but I’m temporarily unsure of its position! 🙁 (that’s Skymonster-speak for “its still in a big brown box having not been unpacked since it arrived from Livermore!”)
i didnt see any of those aircraft when i was there, about what time where you around?
From around 11:00 to 17:00. That’s why I missed the JAL and the ANA – they were still on stand when I left!
why does the new Air Canada colour scheme make me think of a bottle of mouthwash or other hygiene/medical supplies?
Ah, the spearmint A340! 😮
