I don’t think Japan exports any weapons systems that could be used in a war..besides, IN has ZERO experience working with Japanese aerospace companies or defence contractors. its better to standardise the fleet with one LRMR..

If u saw the dti issue (october, page 38) it says the annual life cycle cost for one P 1 will be $ 11 million while for the P 8A it is $ 194 million.

Since India needs a considerable number of these types of aircraft to protect its large coastlines, the wise choice would be to go for a mix of P 8is and P 1s, with the latter acquired in numbers.

    🙂

Both Boeing and Bell quit the contest. Boeing quit for unknown reasons but bell quite coz India was asking for direct sale while Cobra is availaible through foreign military sales only.
    Its the contest between Tiger/A-129/Ka-52/Mi-28.

You may be talking about the tender for the Medium Helicopters. Can you provide links that Boeing has quit the tender for the attack helicopters ?

Boeing has started to look at partners for the 30% offset requirement that it has to fulfill and these are for structural and avionics components for the P-8I. Boeing also expects IN to place more orders for the P-8I, using the options for 4-8 more P-8Is that it has with this contract. considering how pitifully poor IN’s LRMR asset numbers are, it needs at least 20 P-8Is to be able to patrol the huge area that is India’s territorial waters.

interestingly, India has not yet made any request to Boeing about integrating the Brahmos anti-ship missile on the P-8I and the sonobuoys, torpedoes and AGM-84 Harpoons will be purchased through a FMS program, whereas the P-8Is have been purchased from Boeing directly.

I think it would be wise to limit the P-8 I purchases to 10-12 and go for the Kawasaki P-1. In Octobers dti it was noted that the running cost and unit prices of the Japanese plane are much less and the capabilities almost the same.

You were comparing hypothetical future small Japanese carriers with hypothetical future larger Chinese carriers? Why? What’s the point of that?

Err I was answering one of Scoots questions, Well the point is in analyzing how much of a threat the Chinese carriers will be.

What smaller Japanese carriers? There aren’t any! Hyuuga & her sister ship* could, potentially, be turned into rather sub-optimal STOVL carriers, but as currently built, they’re ASW helicopter carriers only.

*Ise? – we’ll find out when she’s launched, but I’d give good odds on that name – and drink a bottle of the local Shinto beer, winner of many awards including Champion Beer at the 2006 Great Japan Beer Festival & rather tasty, to her launch.

I was comparing them with future Chinese carriers, so as both do not exist now it seems a fair comparison.

Ezhimala (PTI): Ezhimala Naval Academy, a project to conduct a host of training courses including research, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on January 8, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said on Friday.

“After deciding to set up a full-fledged naval academy at this site, we have come to a stage wherein we are ready to commence training at the academy and the Prime Minister will dedicate the academy to the nation on January 8,” he told a press conference here.

The over Rs 720 crore project, billed as Asia’s largest is capable of accommodating 750 personnel and about 500 support staff to assist the day-to-day activities of academy.

Flanked by the Arabian Sea, picturesque hills and inland waters, the Academy spread over a 2,452 acres, will be the only centre in India imparting four-year B Tech courses in Electronics and Communications, and Mechanical Engineering for all the newly inducted trainee officers.

The syllabi and the curricula have been drafted keeping in mind the current technical advancements and the skill tests that will be required in handling the future acquisition of the Indian Navy, he said.

“The academy would give a lot more thrust on intellectual works and will have a unique laboratory and plans to allow others to do research works here,” Admiral Mehta said.

The ongoing works of the project are scheduled to be completed by April end and the full-fledged courses will start in June next, he said.

The entire training sessions, currently being held at Goa’s ‘INS Mandovi’, would be subsequently shifted to the ‘INS Zamorin’ at Ezhimala, which is located in Kerala’s Kannur district.

Now that Hyde is gone may be not as much problems then ? I thought the tough British stand solved the issue of ToT and others.

We disagree on this one. Russia welcomed India and Brazil (not sure to what extent) aboard to basically deal with the funding issue. Like i said the design and RCS may be comparable to the American counter parts, but the Radar and other Avionics like the sensor fusion may not be there yet.
