By rhe mid-80s’, the RuAF had no MiG-21 in ftontline anymore, whatever the model was. Most of them were stored and/or modified in drone targets. Some were kept as flying testbeds.
In 1985, there was not a single Fishbed deployed in the Soviet Air Units of the “Forward Area” (East Germany, Poland, Czehcoslovaquia, Hungary)
thanks for replying ….so were the stored versions esp the fishbeds N and L were they combat capable but just deployed to areas where threat was negligible ? or were they mothballed
maybe a stupid question but why isnt the PN concentrating more on missile boats and subs?
a mean a wellequipped frigate how much it costs? how many cheaper missile boats can be made instead? one boat can easily carry 4 x SSm half the punch of a much expensive frigate
pak does not have any overseas commitments , also in numbers it can never come close to Indian navy and its frigates will be always very vulnerable to indian subs.
and what about ASW planes replacing the frigates in that role?
are the planes cheaper than the frigates?
PN should concentrate on being more of a coastal defence force, with offensive operations limited to submaries
There are no specific numbers. On page 101 it mentions “By 1991 the VVS had some 800 Fulcrums on strenth. They where operated by 25 fighter regiments, usually with 32 fighters to a unit…”
Can’t give you any further details on how good/bad the Fulcrum book is as I have not read it yet. It is on a big pile with “to do” books. From browsing through it I think it is a great book.
Can’t comment on the Flanker book at all as I have not got it.
Thank you very much buddy
just to make sure …this is the book u r refering to …right?

^ thanks a lot …peterG could I also plz ask for the source of your information
will appreciate it greatly!
like said above I dont think a low payload for mig-29 or mig-23 was a disadvantage for the USSR in any way they would hardly ever be required to fly strike missions considering the huge number of Fitters, fencers and frogfoots in service at that time
as they were kindly appreciated by scimatar some more model pics …..I hope you guys like them
^thanks great pics ,second pic seems to be a development of the firebar with no underwing engines and side intakes
^ in the firebar did the pilots launch both the radar and IR versions of the missile(AA-3) at the same time to maximise the chances of a hit ?
some model pics on the web of the firebar
exellent photo of a su-11 there.
it is a pity the flagon was never exported, then some may still be in use today..but as people have already pointed out they where a bit to specalised for eny contry to be really interested in operating them, same goes for the fiddler, saying that the foxbat was exported in quite large numbers, though there was a reccie version. .
good point
I think a version of flagon could have been adopted as a true multirole fighter
if given certain air-ground capabilities. It certainly was not agile, but the F-104 and F-101 were no better despite this they had some success in the export market with certain modifications like F-104G
im not sure about mig-17s but im sure the soviets kept mig-21s in storage or reserve for point defence. the RAF equiped some of there hawk trainers with a cannon pod and sindwinders in the 80s for emergency air defence, they even painted them air defence grey….i think even today the russian airforce keep a large number of mig-23s in storage….just in case….
That is what I thought…… i have a book with aircraft holdings of VVS for 1989 and it shows that there were still 500+ MiG-21s in various roles serving mostly bis and Nbis versions.
some Mig-17/19 versions were also modified to carry alkali AAMs with cannons deleted were they part of PVO?
Did the alkali ever score a hit in combat?I have heard it was pretty crude
😀
Scimatar good pics dude
did you find anything more about that firebar vs German F-4 incident?
I believe the less capable PVO interceptors were sent to the far north and fareast parts of USSR as more and more Foxbats and flagons entered service
I read in a Bill Gunston book once that the soviets kept a large number of Mig-17s and early model mig-21s in reserve for use as point defence interceptors as late as the early 80s? can anyone verify that?
we didnt talk about Yak-25 flashlight
and another question when did the Firebars started carrying AA-2 Atolls? were they part of their standard armament?
very nice Scimatar thanks
I think the soviet navy used the Tu-14 as a torpedo plane does anyone have a pic of this in action
anyone has blowlamp or bosun pics?
