    .

Mines are best and the most cost-effective solution for coastal naval warfare as it requires no high technology nor oversized surface combadants. Almoust every ship canbe fitted with mineracks (like soviets, almoust every warship had minerails) and special minelayer ships are usually multirole vessels, like Finnish Pohjanmaa and Swedish Karlskorna (minelayer/traiing ships) or Finnish Hรคmeenmaa class and Yugoslavian Sliba class (minelayer/transport-amphibious ships)

Multi-purpose vessels I think are the way to go like you say for the future of mine warfare.
WW2 accounts mention anti-sweeping devices ??? are they still used?

^ some people rule it out as useless in combat against fighters that is true to a large extent in any 1 vs1 scenario but if whole regiments of foxbats been used as was planned by the soviets in the 80s they would have seriously disrupted NATO airstrikes
as it was so hard to kill, even if their inaccurate missiles do not have a very good strike rate they would be able to reload and return for a second round
I say not a bad plane if used in combination with thousands of floggers and hundreds of fulcrums/flankers !

    steveO nice thread thanks
what possible scenarios could mines play a important role
one is obvious the persian gulf the iranians have a lot of mines
secondly what about Indians laying mines in karachi or gwadar harbours by subs and Bear aircrafts?

    [QUOTE=scimatar]i

wonder how good or bad these aircraft would have been in a dogfight with western aircraft at the time…a fiddler could possibly out turn a B-52, with a good pilot mind you.

    they were pretty bad

but i am sure a flagon could give a phantom a run for its money or a voodoo.a flagon vs f-106 or a lightning “now that would be interesting”……

Flagon if used with the right tactics relaying on highspeed dashes and missile salvos may take out some fighters but clearly that was not how they were designed also they were mostly under GCI
    i

have read somewhere that a yak-28p had a mock dogfight with a [possibly] German phantom over the baltic once.it was unknown if it was agression or just playing around, that would have been nice to see…..

I have heard this too maybe somone could give some details

they didnt put gun pods on the su-15 for nothing i feel..and by the way i wasnt running down the fiddler.i think the job it was designed to do [bomber killer]it would have done very well….

if you use the search option this fighter flagon was discussed before
aphids and gunpods i think were emergency selfdefence solutions in case they encounter enemy fighters

In military terms they could be used as mobile platforms for launching anti-ship missiles which is pretty neat but what will be the cost of such a ekranoplan ? which can carry a decent load (4-6 missiles)

^ I think the latest Flagon was a pretty decent plane esp. with the addition of R-60s it had a good chance of intercepting NATO strike planes of the 80s
Didnt the flagon also replace the fiddlers and firebars which were largely stopgap measures IMHO

    Arthur,
    thank you for your reply
You are quite right we can only make rough estimates with this information.
Do you know Where can i find a more accurate breakdown of soviet fighter inventory (esp. mig-29/23) in the 1989-91 period?

Although the lone mig-25 could be handled with ease by the IDAF,on the central front in europe NATO would have faced nearly 1000 Mig-25/31 & su-15s in addition to the mig-21/23/29.Even if their inaccurate missiles dont hit every time their value would be considreable in disrupting the NATO air campaign.
