With DSLRs the minimum and maximum aperture sizes are determined by the lens, not by the camera body.

Ahh that’s interesting. Because with a bridge camera, of course, you’re limited full stop. It’s an integral package and f8 is as small as it gets.

The other point, is that lenses don’t specify what the smallest aperture is. The only specify the largest aperture, so naturally you look to the camera to give you the information you need to make a choice.

The next days out for the FlyNavy livery aircraft is the Navy day @ Devonport on 5th & 6th Sept, no more after that. fairly sure they aren’t doing Bournemouth, but plans could change.

I know Matt Whitfield, he’s one of the Instructors on NFSF at Yoevilton, they use our aircraft, saw him yesterday to, didn’t know he was flying the Sea Vixen though.

Well, that’s okay. I live in Devonport!

Gave up all thoughts of attending. Weather was going to be absolutely dire until 16:00, and that proved to be the case by all the TV reports during the day.

I expect a few items got up, and promptly came back down though.

Did it go ahead, or was it rained off?

Does anyone out there have any pics from the 70’s of dear old Swinders?
Mine were destroyed in an accident and the remaining were nicked.

I remember having to march up and down inside the hangars also.

DI’s were Sgt Taylor and Cpl O’mara.

I passed through at the end of 1972/beginning ’73. My Mom has our passing out photo, taken in front of said hangar, I believe.

Names are on the back, but I haven’t seen it for a while and have forgotten the names. Will have to get her to dig it out for me, so I can scan a copy.

Boy, I was well good lookin’ in those days, even if I do say so myself. Never knew it at the time though.

They couldn’t have thought much of us. Our flypast was 3 chipmunks.

There’s always one riddle that has eluded me:

I contracted tonsilitis while I was there, which put me in the SMC for a week (thereby backflighting me). There was a coloured orderly working there. He asked those of us so interned there why we always put the bottom sheet on with a big margin at the head end. But before he could enlighten us he was called away for some doubtless urgent medical situation, and I never got the chance to ask why. It’s amazing how these trivial things stick in your head.

Tuesday doesnt look much better….especially the afternoon when we are meant to arrive. We’ll just have to see how things go. May have to leave earlier tomorrow than planned.

    Martin

Not a good idea – wind is heaviest in the morning from about 1am to 10am wind is as high as 34km/h, Moderates to 18km/h around 10 and gets only a few km/h lower till about 4pm, then speeds up to 24km/h.

But rain is forecast throughout the whole day.

Tuesday’s (todays) windspeed is higher, but only “chance of rain”. Suspect clouds will be low, visibility poor.

I havent been to Culdrose for years, but this year will hopefully be arriving on Tuesday night and departing after the display has finished the following day.

Just checked metcheck and its looking quite good – showers in the morning and then getting better as the day progresses.

    Martin

I’ve just checked the weather for wednesday and it doesn’t look good at all.

My guess is that some aircraft won’t make it at all because of the high winds in the morning.

Why does XM603 need to undergo any CAA certification? It doesn’t fly, so why is it important that it undergoes any regular inspections at all?

Also, why does XH558’s certification rely on dismantling any other aircraft, particularly one that hasn’t flown for AT LEAST ten years?

Another reason to venture there on public transport.

    Planemike

I don’t follow this argument. You still have to pay for public transport. If you’re taking your family it could cost much more. If you already have a car for other purposes, then it is more than likely that parking and driving would be much cheaper than public transport. Unless you’re old and/or disabled, of course.

I’ll be there – rotund with black shopping trolley for my lunch and cameras, silver grey chair. Dark grey Micra in the disabled car park, and as close to it as I can get to it on the crowdline. I won’t be able to venture far from it. I’ll be arriving as early as I can – last year was about the 5th car allowed in.

A bit miffed that there won’t be any disabled scooters at the show this year unless you hire one the day before and take it back the day after – at full rates that could be as much as £40. Yeovilton’s were £7, but limited number.

There are Grandstand seats, but they’re a long way behind the crowdline – in fact, behind the arena. 🙁

Incidentally, for other disabled readers, Tremorvah Industries ARE NOT attending (contrary to Culdrose’s website) – hence no disabled scooters on the day.

Well, clearly we’re going to disagree. I don’t think there’s any merit in trying to sway you into thinking anything like this might be a good idea. So fair enough. If you don’t want to contribute to the discussion, that’s fine. That’s your choice.

Neither you, nor I, know what and who might be interested in using such an asset. And that’s not my purpose here. I’m just fielding an idea. Some think it’s good, others think it’s bad. Some think that it’s completely derisory.

Don’t be surprised though, if councils eventually win their goal of completely stopping airshows in some places altogether. We’ll be left with nothing to fall back on if something can’t be worked out that will placate them, and all the other naysayers.

As for Duxford, why do they need more permanent toilets and catering facilities?

It’s an idea, it’s not worth going into in any great detail at this point. I was merely using Duxford as an example of a place that hosts quite a few events now. The places you highlight are not really large enough to cater for regular events, especially if more events were to be attracted to the site.

Corr i would.. i love footie, and the £1m would be a welcome bonus.!:p;)

You can have the money, and the armoured vehicle tow with my blessing. Frankly, anyone who actually WANTS to go to a football match deserves it. But I’d prefer to keep the leg I’d gnaw off out of sheer boredom.

only Duxford holds more than one airshow a year

No, that is not correct. I know that Kemble has a few events during the year. Many of which you might not consider to be in the traditional “airshow” frame, but which follow a similar format. Kemble has at least 3 events. I’ve been to two so far, and there is another one later this year. The VFWE, Annual Air Day & Battle of Britain Weekend.

But there are also a myriad of organisations, that might find it better to host some of their events at a purpose made venue that has the facilities and experience to cater for safety, vehicle management and a whole host of other matters.

The RAF and Navy, for instance, might prefer not to subject their bases to public intrusion, especially as a lowering of costs and stretching of their resources becomes more prevent, and want host their annual events at a small number of these purpose built venues. Outsourcing is often hailed as a good way of keeping costs down.
