Any more news? CU ALL tomorrow.
Whereas I’m the one with the new Grey and the Hairy brakes!!!!
Yes that is correct, the F10 has a very good performance in low lighting and the same sensor will be used on the new S5600. For the average user, this camera will represent an affordable long zoom with plenty of features that will allow acceptable aviation images. When I get a test sample I will pop down to Duxford (awaiting Mike’s comment at this point 😀 ) and test it on a couple of moving targets.
There are “Test Samples”? Would very much be interested in taking party in that project (with an option to buy, and a discount for thanks, of course)!!!
Just thought I’d mention it….
This thread centres around a discussion close to the needs of many photographers of historic aviation. IMHO the entire thread is within that context.
The Pro815 hasn’t been priced up yet AFAICT – and I can’t find it for sale yet. But if it is over, say, £300 you’d be right Darren.
That 5600 looks like a very worthwhile upgrade on the 5k, and probably on the 5500 too. Manual focus will help a lot in terms of reducing shutter lag.
As I’m not rich, I think this could be an affordable upgrade for me, if they can keep it to around £250.
I am, of course, assuming my current teleconverter will work.
I’ll still be looking carefully at the Samsung P815, though – but as it might use a proprietary lithum ion battery, the Fuji and my existing teleconverter could well take it to the cleaners.
That’ll be quite a tailchase.
Great to see these, a refreshing change from the usual.
Yep – I’m wondering if they felt a little overwhelmed last year – as there was a little bit more info – although thinking about it – that was only what we could glean from a flyer that had been posted on the web.
Still, I can’t afford to go any further really – so I’ll be taking my chances. A Harvard, Mustang, a rumoured Spit and Chippie are better than nothing.
Don’t get caught out going all the way round the back of the airfield this year, as I did last.
Come to think of it, I remembered flashing past a sign on the A303 last weekend – didn’t stop to read it though.
I might be going – it is a PFA fly in – but like you I’m stuggling tof ind more info.
It was well worth the trip last year.
Tail flashing past???? That’s not necessarily a bad thing 😉
I can’t speak for the S5500 (although I believe it is similar) – although the S5000 is technically a 3mp camera, it has a interpolation system which can up the picture resolution to 6mp (you have to turn it on, though). This makes it generally better in picture quality than a straight 3mp camera.
Almost all my pictures are taken using the 1.5x Teleconverter – which ups the zoom to 15x, of course – what’s that 500mm+ optical zoom?
Today if you’re looking for a prosumer camera with a good zoom, and 8mp, you might look at this new model from Samsung:

All the shots you see on the forum taken by me, are with an earlier S5000 – at last year, I held a competition for this class of camera.
It has limitations when shooting ground to air. Focusing takes a little too long, so much so that by the time you’ve focused on your subject, your white balance will probably be out.
It can’t use a higher f number than about f8.5 – which means you can’t do really blurred props without sticking an ND filter on the front. I’ve experimented with this – it works, but as I’m sure any good photographer will tell you, more glass is bad.
You will need a teleconverter – I have Fuji’s own, but there are a couple of others, which might be better – so it’s worth looking for them.
Having said that, until I can afford something better – mine is good enough for now.
Some I did earlier this week are here:
I seem to recall TFC’s P38 bursting a tyre at Mildenhall one year. 1995 perhaps? Took about 25 bods and a tractor to drag it back to the stand. I’ve got some photos of it at home in a shoebox somewhere… really ought to get that scanner plugged in some day…
Bye Steve, you don’t have to worry about that now – take care.
RIP.
🙁
Cool – do you have any more info – it deserves to go on the Hanger Deck in the Museum – a vital bit of kit, I would have thought.
Was it from Ark Royal or Eagle maybe?
Any idea how it works?
I asked at the FAA Museum and one chap remarked – “she must be okay – flew over my house this morning”.
But not heard anything official.
I trust tyres, wheels, brakes, oleo’s etc are in reasonable supply?
