Well, the Canberra I photographed was XH134, according to the registration on the aircraft’s side.
I took this as it was making it’s sedate way down the runway.
Mmmm, the first things I remember were probably the Airfix cartons. Then, at the library at school, I found Pierre Clostermann’s “The Big Show” which was probably the most impressionable book I’ve read todate.
I also remember some smallish books that where wider than they were long which had a photograph on the left and a description on the right, often with line drawings, but I can’t remember what happened to them. They were all glossy pages and were actually quite thick. They were hardbacks too.

Good one. I’d love to see the Vulcan trying to fly that slowly.:eek:
Going past it might also cause problems with turbulence.
I missed last years Kemble due to work commitments. I live local so have been going to the airdays since the start. They can be a bit simular each year at times with Delta Jets dominating… This years Show has to be the best for overall content and diversity. A very big well done to all the airshow team.:):):):)
Actually, I’ve been a bit surprised at how few of Delta Jets aircraft have been participating at Kemble shows recently. Early jets are my particular preference. I’d kill for a chance to see a Javelin, or a Lightning in UK airspace.
I too had a great time at the Kemble Airshow, but I have sent an email to events@kemble.com, which I would appreciate a response too, if anyone from the events organisation team is reading this.
The flying was both excellent and safe all day (20th), and am now really looking forward to their Battle of Britain day in September, just a few days before my birthday. But I won’t be buying tickets until I know which of the two days will have the planes I want to see.
Once I’ve processed my photos I’ll put them in the Airshows topic.
There should be more of them. Buffalo travel in herds.
@ Kev 😡 :dev2: 😡 😀
Would love to see a flying UK “V” force formation, we have a number of “V” fighters so:
Vulcan
Vampires
Venoms
Sea Vixen
Alright, so the Vulcan is Avro, while all the others are De Havilland, but it would still be an intriguing and wonderful sight.
Can anyone think of any other UK “V” fighters or bombers, currently flying?
i always felt that if possible finningley would be an ideal place for her?
Robin Hood airport certainly has a long enough runway, unless it has been changed since I was there last (1973).
My understanding is that the XH558 displays at a price lower than cost in the UK. There is a fee, and it ain’t cheap, but it’s nowhere near the actual full cost of the display. Those of us that contribute to the aircraft’s maintenance, etc., also cover some of the display costs.
If they’d negotiate a fee and a portion of the gate money, I believe it would have made a significant profit at Cosford. The place was bursting to the seams. Most of, if not all, the spectators waited for her to appear, and didn’t scarper once the Red Arrows had finished, as they often do.
Yeah, I know. It’s just that you wait two years for something to happen, and it all comes at once.
You also have to realise that living down here in Plymouth, the logistics are such, and the weather was such, that last year it was impossible to travel to a show she actually attended. And I have contributed a lot to the project.
I know why she’s not at Kemble, it’s because she’s at Vokel in the Netherlands, displaying there and I don’t think the runway at Kemble is long enough, is it? So she can’t leave Vokel, and land at Kemble after that display.
I’ll catch her next month at Yeovilton.
Sorry to hear you haven’t been able to go to a show for a couple of years, Kev. I can understand your frustration. I won’t be able to go to Cosford again, it’s proving to be beyond my capabilities.
I think the RAF are in a bit of a limbo, awaiting the JSF.
Moving to the USA at the end of this year.
Superb work, as always, Nick.
XH558 presented herself on Saturday and Sunday. Those of us visiting the museum on Saturday saw quite a number of practice displays.
Yes, if you wanted to get into the Cosford airshow there is only ever one option. Get there before 8:15am – because that’s when they usually close J3 on the M54. I got there a little earlier than that and drove straight onto the airfield without any delay whatsoever.
I’ve been caught like that before. However, I can safely say I have never ever seen it so packed. Clearly in this time of recession people are looking for attractions closer to home, and this must be one of the midlands premier events.
They were parking in the car park access roads on the station before eleven.
Fabulous show, as always at Cosford.
Serving RAF aircraft apart from those mentioned – several little red Hawk thingies, Chinook, Lancaster, DC3 Dakota, Spitfire, Hurricane.
The Black Cats van scurried past me on their way down to Yeovilton (I presume), on the M5 this afternoon.
All the displays were very good indeed. But I would have liked a slightly more spirited climb out at the end of the Vulcan’s display. The howl was there alright, as the engines were run up to full power, but it was a relatively shallow climbout so the full presence seemed muted compared to previous experiences. Hopefully they’ll build on the display as they become more comfortable.
Of course, landing on at Cosford would have been impossible, but a touch and go should have been in the realms of possibility and a chance to see those barn door elev(flaper)ons, airbrakes and the undercarriage extended would have been very welcome. Maybe they were put off by the U/C door problems they’ve had. Anyway, please have a look at this suggestion XH558 guys. It would have made a fantastic photo for those of us with limited capability cameras.
Mind you, I only managed to shots, because I’d used up ALL my camera batteries by the time she arrived. 😡 I’d also messed up my video camera, leaving it on accidentally, so the battery had run out before I even got the chance to take it out of the bag.:mad:
Unfortunately, my health means that future trips to Cosford are unlikely. Even covering myself in two layers of factor 30 have left me with sunburned hands, a sore eye and my legs are going to drop off any moment. So many thanks to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade for helping me with my eye problem. They do a stirling job and never get a mention on here, afaik. Also thanks to my sister and brother in law, who put up with me (they live in Wednesfield, less then 15 minutes to RAF Cosford).
Incidentally, Cosford’s only recognition of the disabled is a hardstanding car park, close to the crowdline and a few disabled toilets (DTs). There is no specific crowdline enclosure with a DT, unlike many other shows.
Stands would also have helped increase the number of people who could get a good view of the days flying.
