Last I heard F-22a was 258 million per jet. No way F-22 is going for 100 million, thats what the americans charged for the crappy F-15K’s.
The often quoted 258 mil $ figure is true for the 179 Raptors and is obtained by dividing the total costs (R&D included) to 179 units. Any extra F 22 produced will cost ~ 110mil. $ and it can go down to ~ 100 mil. $ if the extra orders are substantial. So it is true, the F 2 cost more than the F 22.
only area that the Super Hornet has over the older Hornet. Is its bring back payload……………Which, personally I don’t see worth its many trade offs.
You can add somemore areas where SH better the H:
-RCS, which is estimated to ~ 0.1 sqm., compared with ~3 sqm of the Hornet; it’s the lowest RCS among “conventional” fighters;
-APG 79 (AESA) from 2006. You can’t put it on a Hornet– the cooling system can’t fit in;
-2 more weapon pylons
The GOA report is old news.
Sean, you mentioned the R 37, the R 77 ramjet, Ks 172 and Meteor. None is operational, and none will become in the next 5 years..
In this moment AMRAAM rules.
Asked why Israel will buy AMRAAM when they got the Derby, an IDF/AF general reply that AMRAAM is the missile with the largest NEZ.
The NEZ (no-escape zone) is what matters at a missile–it is an area in the form of an elipse; inside the NEZ, the enemy fighter is nailed whatever its actions (including an 180 deg. turn and run in AB).
The often quoted “ranges” are simply ballistic ranges and applies only to slow moving targets (transport, bombers, etc.).
“mass-plink”… lol… I like it
Now the Adl’A also emphasies on cheap weapons with for instance the AASM… which is a good combination with Scalp/Apache.
Nic
desagree: AASM is clever weapon (modular; multisensor, etc) but the price is (depending of options) between 75,000 and 100,000 Euro, while a JDAM is 18,000 $…
All these mini-cruise missile have similar capabilities: ~ 350 km; IR starring sensor, GPS/INS guidance, two-way datalink for in-fight retargeting.
I wuld bet though that JASSM has the lower RCS. After all is made by LM…
It’s even got vectored thrust during the boost phase (has a integral boost/sustain grain) so in theory you could probably use it in very close too if you’d swapped out it’s SAR seeker for say the AIM-120’s seeker.
Just a note: ESSM has a boost only rocket motor http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-162.html
Strangely our very democratic friends in America are now complaining about Russia using their Gas line as a means to force political goals in Ukraine. Go tell your president that Ukraine already had a cheap price due to political means, which is not allowed too in his opinion then?
The problem is that Ukraine signed a 5 years contract with Gazprom for $ 50 per 1000 cubic m. After only 1 year the russians are demanding 4 times more…
And that Russia can do wathever they want with their resources, and indeed that will be a bitter pill for poor US in the future.
And why? Is US in any way stealing Russia’s natural resources?
but name one Iranian who blow himeself up to hurt any civilians anywhere in the globe.
It could be true, but Iran is accused of supporting Hezbollah. For some people they are freedom fighters; for others they are terrorist.
He fortunately does not have control of the Armed Forces by the constitution and he does not have his finger on any trigger point.
I don’t know if this is comforting. As far as I know, the # 1 in Iran is the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hoseini-KHAMENEI. I think that his position is even more severe than Ahmadi.
About “wipe” remarks see my points above. Also believe me when I say no one in Iran especially the elite have no confusions about Israel Nuclear capabilities. But in Israel current and former governments there were those who for a long time advocated use of WMD’s not as a retaliation but as a first strike option. Even if that is not the policy and those are sheer lies, no nation can afford to be defenseless and have no similar retaliation capabilities in this region. We need to and we will defend ourselves regardless of the rhetoric of the day with any technology that suits our defensive needs. Politicians and governements come and go but the strategic equations remain the same regardless of the “hot-air” spoken by any sides politicians.
Even if Israel has nukes, even if they could be ready to use them pre-emptively, no Israeli govt. vowed to ‘wipe-out” Iran. They don’t have a declared policy to destroy Iran, or even countries that atacked them (Syria). OTOH, Iran (correct me if I’m wrong) has stated as one of its goals to destroy Israel. In these conditions, Israel is not a threat to the very existence if Iran. Iran is (or at least is perceived) as a threat to the existence of Israel.
The 2,500 years is just not about Perspolis or ancient Persia. There are 1,400 years of Islam and previously other religions. And there are many great cultural and scientific ahievements by Iranian scholars during the Islamic period that I am very proud of both as an Iranian and as a human.
I included Islamic period in those 2500 years. However, prabably many of the great men that Persia gave to humanity in 1400 years of Islam, would have been in trouble these days 🙂 : Avicenna is considered the “father of modern medicine” and the greatest philosopher the Islam produced, but he liked wine and women! In Omar Khayyám case, one cannot say if he was greater as a mathematician or as a poet; but his skepticism make the religious officials to oblige him to make a pilgrimage to Mecca in order to prove he was a faithful follower of the religion! Not to mention that in his poems he praised a joyfull style of life (again, wine &women included!) Those two men would have a harsh time in today Iran…
By the way there is no such thing as “Islamic guards” in Iran, We have “revolutionary guards of Iran”
I believed that the offcial name of the pasdarans is Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran’s prespective is not short term. We have survived through 2,500 years of volatile and harsh history. We overcame invasions by many super powers more blood thirsty and have out foxed many other enemies by our resillience and culture. It seems one-dimensional thinking if one believes a few months of aerial or ground war could bring us to our knees! I have no doubt we can outlast this upcoming storm as we have done it many times in the past and reach our goals of independence and peace.
Hello kpars and welcome on the forum!
You are right about 2500 years of civilization in Persia/Iran. However, i find hard to connect the splendor of ancient Persepolis to your actual president, or to the Islamic Guards.
And at the end Iran has no choice but to be strong defensively if we want to be considered as an equal by others in the region as we did not start this arm race but forced to spend our resources to catch up with others.
Well, it seems to me that by developping nukes, Iran is not only trying to be equal with others in the region, but on top of them.
I have no doubt we can outlast this upcoming storm as we have done it many times in the past and reach our goals of independence and peace.
You are talking about independence and peace. These are two respectable notions. But let’s me ask you: how Israel (a country that isn’t even your neibor) could threaten the “independence and peace” of Iran in such a way that the only solution would be to “wipe” this country of the face of the earth?
Now if the new Russian hardaware can protect Iran facilities against a full USAF/USN attack: No
People keep mentioning Kossovo and pointing the “inneficiency” of 78 days of continuous bombing. But, the goal of NATO was not limmited in destroying some facilities as it would be in the case of an (unwanted be me personally) attack in Iran; instead they wanted the Serbs to left Kossovo. Did they achieve this? YES!
Also, between 1999 and 2005 some new hardware entered in US inventory.
-longer range targeting pods (used in Afganistan and Iraq in 2001 and 2003) they offer a stand-off range of more than 40 km (outside of most SAMs Iran have)
– SAR radars with better resolution than the previous generation become standard on US planes: APG 68(V)9 and APG 63(V)1 have a resolution of ~ 2 feets at 100 km. That’s even more stand-off.
-JASSM (~350km) and SLAM-ER (~270km) minicruise missile are available for real-time, opportunity targets.
-and of course there will be always the Tomahawks
