It used to look marvelous. What happened? Why was it disposed of, and more importantly, how was it allowed to degrade so badly?!

    Richard

The cockpit left the museum & went back to the owner ,the engine was returned to the Fleet air arm museum.
For many years not much was done with the cockpit untill about 5or6? years ago the then owner decided to strip out the cockpit for further restoration??
Part way through this the cockpit lost its home & was left outside .

With the extra work needed to put right the stripping out of the cockpit there is also work needed to rectify damage caused by Fairey engineering during there so called restoration.

Should keep me busy for a while.

Any further photos will be much apreciated.

    Thanks,
I wonder how it ended up in the UK?

Or were they used on Fleet air arm Avengers?

The biggest firefly section is the cockpit of WD889 – engine firewall, pilots compartment and up to the front of the rear crew compartment. The tail of the firefly is of unknown number – obviously VT…

The Balliol has no identifying marks other than the fact that it is a T2. All of them belong to the same (very) private owner of Swift WK198. It is heavilly corroded and moving it is not something we will risk doing at this stage without absolute authority of the owner.

I hope we can assume from this that the Gannet will be saved?

The Gannet is due to move within the next 10 days or so, if a certain item of equipment can find its way to Flambards, as for where its going, sorry no idea.

Thanks ,but im refering to Gannet ECM.6 XG831 that is being disposed of by Flambards.

Has it found a new home or does the scrapman cometh?

If you mean ECM.6 XG831, it is still there on the gate of Flambards, it was always a favourite with the Aeropark and they never wanted to get rid of it, so hopefully will remain there for a while yet.
If you mean AEW.3 XL500 that was in the viewing enclosure at Culdrose, that went to Chatham, and is now at North Weald.

Unfortunatly not from a Fairey Firefly.

I was looking at Fairey Firefly for the straight-sides, rounded-top one but considering the photographs the early marks seem to have a narrower base and though the MkIV and MkV appear to be parallel sided, they are too tall. But judging these things by eye isn’t easy. Could it have been cut down?
