What was great about it, apart from the price?
How many thousands of hours must the Nimrod fleet have flown through all the years that it was in service, and what was the loss rate of them? Was it 3 or 4?
The airframe did all that was aksed of it, the crews did absolute sterling service, not only on maritime patrol, but also in assisting with the search and rescue service.
Its a great aircraft in my eyes.
Its a crying shame that it will only be remembered on the whole for the avoidable fatal refueling related accident whilst on active service, and the complete political ****-up that brought about its early or late, depending on how you look at it, demise.
nope, but in my opinion the majority of those who think the war is unwinnable made up their minds on day one, and nothing that you can say will change them.
Its worth countering but not worth getting upset about i think.
You cant change the ways of the locals, theyve been brought up/had it drummed into them that way for centuries!
Years ago we used to live in the UAE where all the labourers where of Indian/Pakistani/Afghan origin.
Whilst the Indians and Pakistanis where always at each others throats, it was a regular thing for the Afghan guys to be fighting quite violently amongst themselves, simply because they where from different reigons of the crap hole or different tribes.
The moment that anybody non Afghan stepped in to break it up, the attitude changed from one of trying to knock seven bells out of each other into ” dont touch my ‘ brother’ ” or we will start on you to those interfering. The moment you walked away they would happily start on each other again.
This wasnt isolated to the company we where working with, it was like it everywhere.
Whilst foreginers are in their counrty they will fight them, when they leave they will revert to bickering amongst themselves.
This has been mooted for a long while, it was definitely spoken about when I was working at Mawgan alongside the resident 203 Sqn Sea King training unit (’04-’05 ish, so not party politics), I seem to remember that it was talked about happening for 2013.
I would image that it would run along similar lines to the Coastguard now.
Havent there been mumbles about it being privatised going back to the mid/ late 80’s?
I seem to remember rumours about it when I was at RAF Mountbatten with the ATC back in the ’86 or ’87.
The war WILL be won, as long as nay sayers dont pull us out before we get the chance to win:(
Its one war that will never be won. Nobody has gone into Afghanastan and done what they envisaged they would do.
The Russians wasted countless of their own lives and multi-millions in equipment only to give up.
Its a lost cause, shoot me down in flames, but the Afghan public will side with who evers offering them the best deal on the day. One day your gods best gift, ( Allah if your that way inclined) the next day your an infidel and they are siding with the Taliban to eradicate you.
The country and its people have always been like this.
Back to the RAF saga, I hear our local toyshop is selling halfprice kites this week, maybe I should buy them all up and put them in storage with an eye to selling them onto the MOD at a later date when they have scrapped/sold off everything else in their inventory thanks to continual cutbacks and wastefulness/belt tightening.
Have the politicians even considered what message this sends out about British aerospace engineering? As usual they know the cost of everything but the value of nothing!
Its an absolute crying shame!
Scrap everything to assist the ” Afghan mission” , which they tell us they are pulling out of ASAP. What are their plans then? Scrap whats left as there is no mission on the horizon? ALL politicians can only see as far as the end of their own snooty, self interested noses!
And here’s proof that you don’t need carriers for a naval battle
Having watched the clip, I think that maybe our current armed forces would be expected to take part in that ‘ battle ‘, but be expected to do it minus the hand bags and with both arms tied behind their backs.
Sorry, replace the ‘ armed forces’ with ‘ dis-armed forces’.
I tend to lurk and rarely post, but I must say I am astonished/shocked/bemused and horrified at todays decisions.
The UK, a maritime nation is now left with NO maritime patrol aircraft, yet we retain Tornadoes specificaly for the Afghanistan mission…the MODs top priority!?
In the name of god, why are we wasting our money on affairs in which we have no interest and are half way around the world, yet bin OUR frontline defences at home.
Is it April fools? Please someone tell me it is.
I tend to lurk and not post, but I thought that I realy had to comment on this matter.
Its a LIVE VICTOR for goodness sake!
Does it matter if its pink, hemp, white, or dayglo orange with brown stains?
It is of no business to anyone apart from the aircrafts owners as to which colour they paint her.
I think she looks stunning and if the new paint helps keep those horrid elements at bay for a few more years then its a good job thats been done well.
On one particular Nimrod flight that I remember vividly we departed SM mid afternoon on a sortie that involved simulated attacks on an imaginary submarine somewhere in the Western Approaches. This also involved some evasive manoeuvres from imaginary missiles fired from the imaginary submarine.
We where luck as Air Cadets to get a 5 hour sortie in a Nimrod from St Mawgan which started with a quick skim of the Southern Irish coast, followed by some photo runs on some russian ships ( a ‘ fishing ‘ ship and a large support vessel of some kind) and then after our lunch, we where also subjected to countless simulated attacks and, as I can still hear the pilots voice now in my head ” roll outs”.
There where 5 or 6 very ill cadets on that flight!
Dug out my moth eaten old 3822 and my list is:
Chipmunk WP896 RAF St Athan
Chipmunk WP929 RAF St Athan
Chipmunk WB560 Im Guessing Exeter Airport
Chipmunk WP920 RAF St Mawgan
Chipmunk WP920 RAF Abbingdon
Chipmunk WP833 Exeter Airport
Chipmunk WP833 Exeter Airport
Chipmunk WK642 Exeter Airport
Plus
3 Gazzelle flights
2 Wessex Flights
2 Puma flights
1 Nimrod
1 Chinook
1 Hercules
1 DH Rapide!
I was realy, realy, realy lucky with the amount of time and variety of aircraft that I flew in with whilst in the ATC.
I logged 22 hours and 24 minutes airtime.
My highlight was my chippy flight out of St Mawgan, I used to spend hours as a kid watching the Shackletons and Nimrods on approach to St Mawgan over my Nan and Grandads house up at Hensbarrow Beacon, It made my day to fly the same route over their house, then to U turn and barrel roll over their house!
My Dad swore blind that it was a trio of J.P’s, but I told him that Strikemasters had wing tanks, I’ll just put it down to his old age and bad eyesight.
Just saw what looked like 3 Strike masters flying in formation over the Dawlish/Teignmouth area.
Thats great news, well done all involved!:D
One thing posted on the VTTS website puzzles me still though
“As the result, VTST is delighted to announce that it is able to continue its activities on a more secure financial footing, and that the prospects of seeing the Vulcan fly in 2009 are now good. “
Prospects still good? Shouldnt it be more along the lines of “prospects guaranteed?” or are we in for another pledge alert in the not too distant future?
As Ive said previously, I hope my negativity is proved to be more than wrong.
Fingers crossed for the tin triangle.
Is it right what I hear now they looking for another 2 mill?
If the past is anything to go by, that shouldnt be for a couple of months at least…….
Seriously though, I hope that the money is raised, BUT I do belive that as with previous ‘ give us the money or the Vulcan gets it’ appeals, its only another stay of an inevitable execution.
Lets hope Im proved completely and utterly wrong, I’ll be more than happy for that on this matter.
I think Marshall’s are to blame for this. They should put in the half mill that the Vulcan needs by Friday. When the aircraft was flying to airshow’s the staff of the aircraft was geting paid and staying in 5 star hotels.Where did that money come from????
So the engineering staff, i.e the guys that where actualy doing the real job, and not the ones sat on their arses behind a desk are to blame?
Staff of the aircraft?
Staff actualy getting paid!
What a rip off! You mean that they didnt voluntarily pay their own accomadation and traveling costs and then expected to get paid…….What planet are you on?
Would you ‘work’ for free?
