It does seem that when QE enters service she will be operated along the lines of the old HMS Hermes during the Falklands.
Most Marine attack units in the Vietnam War were land based out of Da Nang.
The Eilat was an ex RN ww2 destroyer………her radar was on but the Komars that fired on her were in the harbor and the set may not have been able to descriminate them from background clutter…….in any event the crew did not detect them on radar but did sight them visualy. It took a total of 3 Styx missiles to sink the vessel and the were engaged by the ships 40mm guns, although it is obvious that they missed the targets….
Not sure if Im reading posts right, but………Finland(IMHO) really got the shaft in ww2. Certainly for the size of the country they did very well against the USSR, but of course in the end it was hopeless. The size differential was just too great. as far as casualties go……TOTAL Soviet casualties for the Winter War and Continuation war were in the region of 1,158,000 of which about 391,000 were KIA and 763,000 were WIA. Total Finnish losses for both conflicts seem to be in the area of 88,000 KIA and 201,000 WIA. Stark numbers.
The excersize my unit (2AD FWD) was involved in towards the end of 1988, FREE LION, was part of a series of excersizes that were going on in West Germany from Aug to Nov. It was pretty massive. Here a link for a book about it. http://www.tankograd.com/cms/website.php?id=/en/FREE-LION-88.htm
Has the F-108 been posted here yet?
You might look up some cold war era NATO excercises such as REFORGER. I was in one of those and it was pretty big. My unit also was in FREE LION and “Ofens Visor” (sp).
Should have gone with Merlin.
Well said, Bmused.
The British do have some experience with designing their own naval vessels, so I fail to see the need to go for a German designed patrol ship.
Oh my!!!!!! (yep…..its fake…..but still…..)
Very impressive achievment. It seems that as far as the US Navy is concerned, UCAVs are the future.
Any chance of Taiwan starting a (hypothetical) IDF 2?
Niether one would be sold to Taiwan. China forbits France and UK from selling military equipment to Taiwan.
Well…….its air combat…..stranger things have happened, and documentation in that war was….”sketchy”…..at best. Probably never know exactly what happened.
