What about the Franklin Roosevelt? When was she decommed?
Its a shame the Philllipines didnt know how to properly maintain theirs……..
I completely agree with you on UCAVs…….they are the future. I remember seeing early one back in the 80s when we had the tanks in the field at Ft Hood. My dad, an old F-100, A-7, and F-16 driver seems to think along those lines also. But I just have no confidence that Britain will ever put manned fixed wing to sea again. I do hope and pray I’m wrong, but I havent seen anything to give me any hope. Sorry.
How come HOTDOG get two F-35 threads?!
My fantasy: 1969……..Australia buys HMS Victorious and 12 to 15 F-8s……..
I think the main reason certain people are a bit “pesimistic” as to UK’s future carrier capability, is that for the last 20 years there has been nothing but an uniterupted string of cuts in capbility. EVERY time the politicians cut the British armed forces, they come up with a new plan and try to assuage feelings by saying, to the effect, “These are the last. We’re good now and in a few years, we’ll, perhaps, maybe, start to build up again.” But not once has that happened. Its allways the same, after a couple years something else has to go and the plan changes. Its really very depressing stuff. So please, now, explain how this time is any different from last time. Seen it all befor……jag force, sea harrier, now JFH. So please excuse me and a few others if we’re not completely optimistic about the situation. I feel I’m just being realistic. Now………………hit me with the personal attacks. There is ALOT of that here.:(
They canned the Jag force early cause they needed to save money and JFH was more capable. THEN they canned Sea Harrier cause they needed to save money and Harrier was more useful than SH. NOW JFH is gone. What happens next year? Tornados go?
Lets hope the new congress isnt serious about cutting the budget. Cause if they are, the Marines may be in for a bit of a shock.
They could offer her to Thailand. They could use anoth yac……I mean ….aircraft carrier….:D
Kind of an interesting read. Lets hope it doesnt happen.http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20101113/marines-under-fire-pentagon-cuts-id-10141519.html
Iv worked with them. They were in the barracks next door when I went thru Knox. But dont be surprised if the present administration starts to make some cuts……….a couple months ago the SECDEF publicly wondered that the Marines had become a “2nd army” and could we really afford that? At the time my knee-jerk reaction was to think him the fool…….but know that I’v thought about it for a time………hmmmmmm….I just cant get around trying to use a $100+ million dollar stealth bird from a jungle clearing.
Its a British thing.
Indeed.
The Royal Navy wont be getting any. They’re finished with fast jets. Its an RAF show from now on.
And just how big is Afganistan’s coastline?
